No one can outdo Beth Gibbons, but you're voice is pretty dang good. keep it up.
Exactly, this cover lacks the emotion and pain breathed into every word Beth Gibbons spoke, and smoking cigarettes is completely arbitrary when it comes to the raw emotions of Beth, as she literally cried into the mic with absolute control. It is so natural to its core.
This young lady has a great voice, I just have a hard time reading comparisons with Beth when there isn’t even close to one. From the very first note the difference is glaring.
This is a new perspective and interpretation of the song. A very beautiful version, nonetheless, but without the grime and innate sorrow of Portishead. To each their own. Great job Hayley Richman, I would never dare take anything away from your obvious talent. Best of luck in the future.

Best cover of Roads..my absolute favorite song in the world. Beth Gibbons had more feeling in her songs than any other singer in the entire world. And an amazing cover, wonderful job. Beth is the best choice for influence, dont stop.

your voice is ethereal.This is an amazing cover... I often choose this version to the original. I personally think your voice shines within this genre, (trip hop) you should try to work out some Phantogram covers; or even work out some original stuff within this style. I listened and watched. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to stop it mid way through. I was hoping that it wouldn't detract from the soaring emotion of the original. Then, while halfway through, I knew everything was OK. I was certain because I felt the tell tale roll of a tear down my cheek. Beautiful, thank you.

I've never heard this song before but your unbelievable cover has definitely made me want to check out the band.
Aaaaaand The Sneaker Pimps.. the genre is called trip-hop.. so far ahead of Its time.
Luis Gonzalez then you have a journey in time and space back to the early/mid 90's Bristol/England : this track came from the seminal album "sour times " by Portishead (94) .
I saw them live in a small (ish) venue in that year and that still remains one of the greatest concerts I have ever seen. But last year (2014) they played a fantastic concert at Glastonbury . So still a potent force 20 years on.
I like Hayley and her cover versions but Beth Gibbons is such a "soulful" performer live (more so than on record maybe) and this is the quality that a very young singer will struggle to equal when covering a brilliant "atmospheric " song like this.

That's coming from my older brother who was at the Roseland Ballroom, NYC, back in 1997, and saw Portished perform live. He said yours is hands down the best cover he's ever listened. When I clicked "play" and you started singing, the first thing he said while sitting down beside me was "Gee... that's impressive". He was in raptures listening to your voice! There is no doubt that you have a beautiful voice but you did not convey the sadness behind the original. Your voice is too bright & upbeat. The original is just one of those songs that can make a grown man cry. Excellent attempt.

I am a massive Portishead fan, so I was a bit biassed as I read a comment about this version being better than the original....and I was even more determined to like it when I saw a pretty, young girl was going to perform it! And then you started singing....few voices have ever brought tears to my eyes....you have the voice of an angel.
