Lash extension allergies explained

- So many people have been reaching out toask about what caused them to have a reaction that made them stop getting eyelash extensions. So this post was a must. I've been getting my lashes done for 6 years & all of the sudden I developed a reaction (swollen lid that would later turn dry, itchy and red eyes and runny nose). Same adhesive. Same lash tech. I was so confused. I tried sensitive glue which worked for a while but a few months later I ended up with the same result. The culprit behind this is an ingredient called Cyanoacrylate. It is found in ALL lash adhesives, since it is responsible for converting the glue from liquid state to hard. Kind of like acrylic gel that dries and becomes your nail. Without it the glue would be just watery sticky substance which would not hold up your extensions. Unfortunately once you have a reaction, you will always have a reaction. But here is what you can do to avoid the inconvenience and suffering. 1) take a Benadryl or an Allegra right before your appointment 2) have your tech mist your lashes after application. Cyanoacrylate needs microscopic amounts of moisture to cure, this is why adhesives dry faster in humid treatment rooms 30-50% humidity. Once the adhesive cured it stops emitting fumes that are irritating your eyes. 3) put cream based (not oil) cortizone 10 on your lid right above your lash line and under the eye either throughout the 1st day and before bed. 4) take another antihistamine before bed that night 5) if you feel any burning sensation or itching that night, wash your lashes with lash shampoo (it will speed up curing) 6) ask your lash tech to try a clear adhesive on an off chance that you are allergic to carbon which is what gives the adhesive it’s black color.💋 #lashnightmare #lashfail #allergy #lashallergy #minklashes #mink #dmvlashqueen #valashes #dmvlashes #lashtech #lashandbrow #extentions #fullset #lashaddict #volumelashesdc #dmv #dmvmua #dmvlashes #dmvlashqueen #lashes #lashtech #lashlook #lashbar #lashextensions #lashaddict
Thank you for this video!Found this after I have been experiencing the same issue after my last few lash fills... thought I was going to have to stop getting lash extensions. The Benedryl has definitely helped. I also was just recommended to use Avenova (it has Hypochlorous acid, is antimicrobial, safe for lash extensions and recommended by opthomologists), and discovered it completely stops the itchiness I get from my reaction to the fumes. You can either spray directly on your closed eye or use a lint free swab to spread around the eyelids twice a day... no need to rinse it off. It will also prevent oil and bacteria build up around lash extensions which helps prevent infections. I am so grateful to have found a combination that allows me to keep my extensions!
I knew I wasn’t crazy! My tech said you can’t develop an allergy after getting extensions for years and that I must have blepharitis. But the reaction would only start the day after I got my lashes done and continue until they were removed. Even after I removed them, my lids were peeling and still really itchy. I’m going to try the steps you took. Thanks so much for this video!!
I was told the same thing. Blep, would manifest totally different. Usually comes from oil buildup but does not cause the same symptoms as allergies. Let me know how it goes. Good luck ♥️
Thankyou for this info. I am about to get my lashes done and this is one of my fears.
What were your symptoms? Mine is stuffy nose, cough & red eyes. Scared to go again but love my lashes!
I started regular monthly lash extentions in 2016 and developed allergy 2019 and since then I still can't wear in 2024..... =(
Thanks so much, very helpful
Hi! Thank so much for sharing this! I found some websites when googling that apparently recently came out with hypoallergenic cyanoacrylate free extension glue and was wondering if you knew anything about this?
I developed a horrible allergy to it after years of extensions and am so desperate to find a way to get them back! Lash lifts just aren't the same!
Have you found anything within the two years?
I’m experiencing this right now day 2 taking pills & applying cream! I feel pretty good the eye lids are still puffy but I kept up all day I’m hoping tomorrow the swelling goes down I’m not itchy or having boood shot red eyes I feel confident! ❤️
Awesome, glad to hear that you are having some improvements. I would aslo wash them the same day and ask your lash tech to place the extensions a bit further from your lid than she normally would. That generally helps a lot.
Omg this happen to me in January I never got my lashes done again is so sad
Currently going thru this right now literally sitting here with swollen itches red eyes 😢 it’s so irritating I thought it was from clutches thinking getting extensions would be better CB it it’s not it’s the same type of glue I didn’t know until now 😭😢 140 down the drain
If cortisone doesn't relive the symptoms, try eczema cream called triamcinolone acetonide. Works wonders for me and all of my allergy prone clients.
Once your eyes reacted what can be done ?
So what happens when you’re the tech and have an allergic reaction after performing a service? Oh and thanks for the info because I’m also allergic to the actual service as well I take a Zyrtec before my appt and apply Flonase to my eyes after cleaning them.
I am allergic and i don’t have any issues applying extensions to my clients. I would not recommend Flonase ( it is meant to be absorbed by the mucus membranes of your nasal passages) and does very little on skin. It evaporates almost instantly and absorption is basically 0 on epidermis. I now use triamcinalone (which is a prescription eczema cream) and it works miracles for me and majority of my clients. If you are having a reaction after performing the service i would recommend keeping the adhesive as far away as possible and ventilate the space as often as you can. Unfortunately mask such as surgical and N95 won’t do much because adhesive vapors will go immediately through them. The only thing that will protect you from vapors is the p100 mask that people use to paint cars in. I highly doubt you want to go that route lol
@@OLavinchy1 I think it’s the ingredients in the actual glue because whether is an application on me or me performing an application I have the same issues. Wheezing, itchy throat, stuffed nose, itching eyes, and sneezing 🤧
Every time I go for a fill i get a runny nose and so congested like a allergies for like 3-4 days. Why do you think that is? Thank you
Same!!!!
Take Zyrtec before the service and then when you clean them apply Flonase that’s what I do. My throat itches, I sneeze, stopped up, swollen eyes, and it used to feel like I had something in my eyes.

Hey there! Thanks so much for making this video! I had a very similar experience getting my own lashes done. When you apply the cream and take the medication does it completely get rid of the reaction or do you still react a little bit? I’ve really wanted to attempt to get my lashes done again since developing the allergy but based on my research it seems like I can never have lashes again. If there was any possible way that could rid of the reaction I’d be willing to try! Thanks so much!
Hi there, after following theses steps the reaction is very minimal if at all present. :)
My kids split it was horrible
