Don't you think he used his left hand thumb instead of moving to another voicing? That's how I played it (and learned to use the thumb to fret and mute with) Fantastic topic btw!! Really love the Hendrix comping style :)
No man !!! This is wrong!!! He plays the root notes with his thumb and mutes and skips the notes on A string. It is even more complicated then that. Watch other Hendrix rhythm guitar playing. This guy's lessons are rong.
Thank you for the excellent explanation. Concise, to the point, not much fluff. Good enough for a beginner to start experimenting in both major and minor scenarios. Great job!
Great video and instruction. I'm a beginner trying to connect all the dots with the scales and chord shapes I'm being taught. Want to be able to play something similar to this instead of the simple strumming of chords I feel like I've been locked into for some time now.
this is one of the greatest lessons on youtube, the only hard part is to walk away and translate this into other chord progressions rather then just playing what we are during the lesson
Great lesson! its been a week since I subs'ed and I learned tons :)) thank youuuu could u do an "extended" lesson on hendrix style playing, like exploring the pentatonics further from the root & maybe a few licks common in those positions..
You're becoming my favourite guitar guy on YT. Just wondering if the over-pronunciation stuff is done on purpouse, since sometimes you do it and sometimes you don't. Anyway, I love the gee-a, dee-a and aaaayy-a chord progression.
Late for the party, but still would like to express my appreciation. Others, as did Hendrix would incorporate the thumb on the top strings, something that after a week of practising several times a day I deemed physically impossible for me :D You show great alternatives to this! Thank you soo much
Great lesson, I've been playing for a long time but appreciated the lesson so clearly demonstrated. Subscribed. I like your style on cheating on the piano also, very accessible.
To all of the naysayers out there, let's see YOUR "Hendrix Chord Inflections" video. Until then Sean gets a another subscriber! - Sean, I've watched a number of your videos and I've learned something from each one, this one makes me a subscriber!
This was excellent. You really boiled it down to the essentials (as far as I know). I never even considered trying to learn anything Hendrix, but now it seems like some is possible for a novice like me.
You sound great. Awesome lesson. In the case of the Major 7, do you pick notes from a major 7th scale (I think that's a thing) to embellish it or do you look at the notes of the overall progression? That one part went kind of fast for me. Such a cool lesson.
Thanks Sean for breaking this down! The 5th of minor II III and VI on 5th string “can become” inverted root of IV, V and I. It helps me to use a metronome and alternate between chords and scale tones.
I've heard Page referred to as being sloppy. Hendrix was relaxed and fluid. hitting all the muted strings and raking with the pick was not just ham handed inaccurate playing. It's a percussive element the old R&B players used. SRV did something similar, but he would strike hard on the "one-and". Texas shuffle.
Vibrato, bends, pull-offs and double-stops, tapping, muting are a must but the real trick is thumbing that fat sixth string and letting your other digits do their thang! Not so easy at first but what worthwhile ever is?
Dude you have the coolest intros...Lol... Love the lessons man. Been learning so much since I came across your videos. Thanks & big ups from South Africa!!!
Jimi Hendrix and SRV are making music in heaven. Jim Morrison is adding the lyrics. Freddie Mercury is singing Cliff Burton is playing the bass. Buddy Rich is playing the drums. Think about it. That is Godly Music right there. I don't think you can beat that.
Hey Sean! Long time viewer, first time writer. Nah, haha, just kidding. Found this lesson while looking for tips on how to mix chords and lead, and stumbled upon your channel. Great lesson, helped me out a lot! Subscribing for sure! :)
@@seandaniel23 It was easy to say, because it is TRUE! God bless and keep you! You are one of the finest guitar teachers in the UA-cam Universe. Please keep up the great work. The capacity to make the complex simple is truly a gift.
Describing Hendrix' playing as sloppy is wrong, and a disservice. He learned this stuff from r&b players, like Curtis Mayfield. These were not sloppy players. Hendrix was a pretty precise rhythm player. Not perfect, but not sloppy. Stop lying to people. It will only reinforce a belief that their sloppy playing doesn't need practice, & already sounds good enough. More woodshedding is necessary.
Hey man, I know this is a late comment, but would you mind explaining what you meant by "the right hand doesn't have to be very accurate" (or Jimis left hand). If I'm playing an inflection and my right hand is strumming all the strings it sounds pretty horrible with open strings ringing out etc, so does this mean it's better to be more accurate and precise? Or should I be 'sloppily precise' ie strum the chords around the inflection point? Cheers
Yeah so maybe sloppy was the wrong word. But if you watch his playing, he's clearly striking all the strings most of the time, but he's usually muting the open strings with his fretting hand so they don't ring out. So from a rhythm standpoint, you can just keep that hand moving.
Yeah maybe don't try to teach people specific styles or techniques that you clearly don't fully understand and are incapable of actually playing well. That was painful to watch. Your really good at the more folksy, acoustic stuff though. I'm sorry man, but that was pretty cringy. There is a ton of inflection and nuance in this style which you should understand and be able to perform before you go messing up other players.
And he uses hi thumb for the base notes. Not sure where you got your info but someone completely misled you. Look him up on UA-cam. It's pretty clear what he's doing. Stop teaching young players bad habits.
Great lesson. Gotta strengthen me left hand to get all dem strings to ring out. As others have pointed out, Hendrix was fluid, not sloppy. You're forgiven.
Yeah so each chord has it's own scale (or mode) that pairs with it, but you can always repeat certain scales behind different chords to get cool sounds.
pennies from heaven ..what a great lesson... well done you... you should smile and listen in the quietness of the night to the many people you have helped to emulate that gorgeous tonal palate .....
If you want to play hendrix, you have to learn how to use your thumb. There will be much more freedom for fingers to improvise. Hendrix and sloppy? really the wrong word. Page has a sloppy style like you describe, that was really unique for his sound. But Hendrix plays really fluid, I mean check out the woodstock impro and his great rhytm work at axis bold as love - no more words to say
Yes, Jimi was loose and relaxed when he playing, not all tensed up. This instructor has fingers like Jimi’s = long, slender fingers. Jimi played shapes that were comfortable. He played standing, sitting, on the couch, on the bed, in the bathroom, everywhere. An introverted personality, he was sexually abused when he was young. I liked his later song writing the best. The cleaner tones, the better, with with all the effects junk turned off.
Hendrix didn't use barre chords hardly at all he almost exclusively used the thumb over the 6th and 5th strings and made the rest of the chord normally that way he didn't have to worry about moving his index finger and doing the embellishments like hammer-ons and pull-offs with the pinky and ring fingers was easier and made his playing more fluid.
That guitar tone. Be still, my heart.
Thanks! It's all that strat man, I love it!
This one video changed my entire style of playing. Mind blown
So cool to hear :)
Don't you think he used his left hand thumb instead of moving to another voicing?
That's how I played it (and learned to use the thumb to fret and mute with)
Fantastic topic btw!! Really love the Hendrix comping style :)
He did use his thumb
He mentioned that in the video
No because he was left handed
NewWorld Haha! Indeed! good catch :D
you are correct, he did use it to mute and fret yes
Thanks, I appreciate you showing the non-thumbs methods. The only thing I have in common with Donald Trump is his hands :-)
I think that's an acceptable commonality :)
Apart from the excellent lesson, this was a lovely insight into Hendrix! Great job!
Thanks so much!

Me too, I agree: Great job! \m/

Thanks Pete. Yeah definitely start trying to make those scale connections within a chord. It's a great way to visualize them together.
I get it when you say sloppy, But the wording really is all wrong, Jimi was a very LOOSE player
yeah, loose is a more appropriate word.
Semantics! Jimmy page was a sloppy player too, it's on purpose.
Yeah better adjective. On a bad night he was sloppy and loose and still a thousand times more soulful than most.
@@yoloswag6242 It depends. If he was on acid yes. But if you listen to the Filmore East recordings with his band of gypsies he's pretty clean.

my fave lesson!... and now my fave guitar youtube teacher is covering iT! Thanks so much Sean! Love the vids so much
Thanks so much for the kind words! I'll keep em coming!
Playing two notes (you mention this around 7:10) at once is usually referred to as double stop playing.
Right on man!
Thanks Sean for breaking this down! The 5th of minor II III and VI on 5th string “can become” inverted root of IV, V and I. It helps me to use a metronome and alternate between chords and scale tones.

Right on, I kind of regret using the word sloppy, your explanation is closer to what I actually think :)
Matt I dont think he's sloppy either. That seems to be a common perception people have though. there is a difference between sloppy..and loose.
Sean Daniel right on +1!
Listen to JF on Dani California, exactly the same...
Best lesson for the guitar Ive ever seen, at least, for the style I want to emulate haha. Thank you so much Sean!!!
Thanks so much for reaching out Cale! Happy to help :)
Good stuff; thanks. Do you have anything on Hendrix's use of the 7#9 chord?
I NEED to make a vid on that!
Vibrato, bends, pull-offs and double-stops, tapping, muting are a must but the real trick is thumbing that fat sixth string and letting your other digits do their thang! Not so easy at first but what worthwhile ever is?

How about forcing myself to learn the thumb on top kind of a bar chord, like Hendricks, Mayer and others.
Jimi Hendrix is the Richard Pryor of guitar. Everyone modern guitar eats from his troth in some bluesy way or another.
Use...your....thumb....dude.
Thanks for this

So are you supposed to use one scale behind all the chords or one scale for every chord
Meaning a different scale to match what wver ghord your pkaying

hey sean, just wondering if you get the high e string to ring out with this hendrix type shape? cause i dont and your fingers look close to mine lol
thanx again Sean - very on point ! always glad when what i play during your video sound something similar to what you are doing

I'm all the time inflecting chords; I had just never heard that word to describe it before! haha this is great!
Thanks so much!
Amazing, that was an eye opener! So that is the reason why my pinky loves to hit nearby notes. Thank you so much!

This is a nice lesson. I just wonder why explain what a basic major chord is...
Non-thumb is non-Jimi, but nice chordings, just the same...
I appreciate it :)

Sherwood green, my fave.

Any guidance on getting that tone from your strat? Amp setting/ effects?
Great lesson. So Jimi really collected dolls? Are you foolin me main?
Nah, I'm just playing. But that is a nice looking doll.
Is an 'inflection' an embellishment using notes from that chord? If so, I understand the difference between an embellishment and an inflection
Yeah I'd say they're the same thing.
excellent lesson has just illustrated what I have been missing great job
So awesome to hear man, keep rockin it out.
