  • Measure for Measure was one of the finest comedies by William Shakespeare with philosophical connotations. It was written in 1603 and was first performed in 1604. Alfred Tennyson was so impressed by this play that he wrote a poem Mariana which was inspired by the character Mariana of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. German dramatist Bertolt Bretch wrote Round Heads and Pointed Heads which was an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. The philosophical idea of this play is “those in position of authority, ought not to demand of their subjects a moral stance which they cannot adopt themselves.”
Shakespeare took inspirations from Cinthio's story The Story of Epitia from the book Gli Heathcomithi. George Whetstone wrote a play based on Cithio's story in 1578 and added the two tricks, the bed trick and the head trick in the play. Shakespeare took both these tricks in his own play Measure for Measure.
Major characters of Measure for Measure are Duke Vincentio, Magistrate Angelo, soldier Claudio, Lucio, Isabella, Mariana, Mistress Overdone and Kate Keepdown. The story is about a corrupt magistrate who tries to exploit a young girl whose brother is sentenced to death.
