- Researchers at MIT and Brigham and Women's Hospital have developed a new drug capsule that remains in the stomach for up to two weeks after being swallowed, gradually releasing its drug payload. It seems to me that the more time you prolong between a dose the higher chance there is of the patient forgetting the next time they need to take it. That is what happens to me with my allergy shots. When I was on three shots a week I had no trouble remembering; whenever I took a shot every six weeks, however, I would often forget to go.
OK. But the burning question left unanswered is how do you ensure the capsule doesn't malfunction inducing an overdose.

that's a really cool idea. life happens and sometimes your running late or what have you and its hard to remember to take that antibiotic. This would be great to take one capsule and be done. but what if the pill timing fails? would there be implications for a drug that's potential is overdose? painkillers, high bp? that would scare me

what about the varying degrees of ph values from person to person ? would that need to be taken into account in the release of the drug ?
In the stomach there's an average of pH, which allows the use of buffers so it it doesn't have to be a matter of concern
What do you do when a patient develops an allergy or has other complications with the drug? How do you remove it then? You can't just puke it out because of the shape. Before you get this on the market you may need to find a quick and easy way of removal. Maybe you could use those origami robots.
Maybe the drug capsule could be melted in the stomach with some common non-toxic stuff.
Or maybe just try the drug in it's normal form before injesting that star thing. If you melt the star it will releace all of the drug left in it, resulting in an overdose

Many complications don't happen within the first few times you take the drug. I developed an allergy against an antibiotic when I had to take the second package. I went by with the first one for over a week without any problems. Just think about giving for example birth control pills for the whole month with this. These pills are known to cause problems, sometimes even after months of taking them. No matter what, there has to be a quick way of removal.

Birth control doses are administered also as an injection, which can not be excreted. The issue here is about the way you can deliver and mantain a treatment over time. Other problems as allergies usually pop out in 2nd stage studies, and are controlled and informed for almost every kind of pharmaceutical form, meaning that such thing is not an issue, unless you are allergic to the very material of which the star-shaped capsule is
