Personally I wouldn't worry about the cosmetics. It's a tool designed to take the abuse of the surf, scratches and scuffs are a part of the game when you hop rocks or swim structure. Just be mindful of any abrasions on your spool lip that could chafe your line. A nice feature of the original VS and VSX ( penn 704 etc.) is the skirted rotor which shields the spool somewhat.
