  • The Bandwidth Tester can be used to measure the throughput to another MikroTik router (either wired or wireless) and thereby help to discover network "bottlenecks".

    There is some misinformation here - not a major though.
    The default for bandwidth test is RX (receive) - not both directions.
    Also, as a note, by default this s running a UDP bandwidth test. On LAN, this is fine to get absolute capacity, but TCP is what I recommend in general as there is quite an overhead for that, and most traffic actually used is TCP.
    Also, TCP bandwidth test WILL use a lot of CPU resources. Is recommended that you test "through" a connection to get a real representation (from a server/client that is not the connection being tested).
    Also, also... Unsure about the latest versions of RouterOS, but @7.1.5 the bandwidth test was limited to single thread "per test" so would cap out @ about 2 Gbps on a CCR1072. You can however open multiple terminals and run multiple instances.
    As an Aside, there is no current capacity for RouterOS to run to Speed test server, not to run iPerf... However I'm sure that something could be done in a Container (although I do not know of the overheads of veth and wther the unit could run direct on switch chip - hw offload - or if it would be entirely software emulation - CPU)

    Thanks for the wonderful video, MIkrotik is really a very good troubleshooting tool, that will definitely come in handy, especially on my Wireless links. I noticed that version 7 now also has a Speed test option, is that the same as the bandwidth tool, also on the bandwidth test may you please add the total data used in the duration of the bandwidth test in statistics? Does Mikrotik have public bandwidth test servers ?

    Can I do this bandwidth test through a WG tunnel? Also, how did you come up with 10.10.0.2 on the client settings. It is not clear which interface IP address the BTserver will use........

    Why would the TCP test and UDP test have different results speeds?

    Hi there! Is it possible to use the bandwidth test through a VPN or only with physical connections

    • @zactodd3144
      @zactodd3144 Рік тому +1

      Yes it is, but if I don't believe you can current use Routing Marks/Tags as a selection of path, so if you are testing to a server not in the route table via the VPN, you'll need to add a route to that server via the VPN.
      If the test is temporary, don't forget to remove the route after (and obviously be careful not to add a route that will break the route table 😊)

      @@zactodd3144 Got it, my friend. My use case is to test the throughput of a tunnel to see how much data I can pass to access an application. Thank you very much for your answer.

    what is the difference between bandwidth test and Mikrotik traffic generator?

    • @mikrotik
      @mikrotik  6 місяців тому +1

      Traffic Generator can simulate any kind of traffic that can happen in real life. It is a very advanced tool.
      Bandwidth test is very basic, simple random data stream. Like speedtest. Not super accurate, but simple.

    How about using iperf3 like normal people do?

    • @mikrotik
      @mikrotik  Рік тому

      This tool is far more powerful as it can simulate any kind of real traffic

      @@mikrotikreally? And always need another router to do the check.... vs iperf3 that is a "standard" tool for bandwidth test that you can run on a normal server? Please provide an iperf3 compiled to Mikrotik tool. Or better, share the source code of the bandwidth test tool.

    I’m looking for lower cost alternative to Fluke LinkIQ $3000 cable tester. This seems to be a viable option.
    Do you also have cable test feature on your routers?
