Desi literally means local or native. It's a hindi word (derived from Sanskrit) mostly used by Indians. So if an Indian says "Desi", it means he is referring to an Indian thing, whereas "Videshi" means foreigner.
Our version of “Latino/Latina”
'Vilaayati' is also used colloquially for something foreign.
Desi is Sanskrit word , later got into not just hindi but many other SA languages.
Actually in uttarakhand we use desi for other Indians and pahadi for native people of mountains like nepali, uttarakhand ,hp, and Kashmiri
