The last book of the Bible is called that. It received this name because it begins with this very word. And because it speaks of what must happen at the end of time, “Apocalypse” took on the meaning that we give it today, related to all kinds of catastrophe and the end of the world…
Apocalyptic ideas have had a decisive influence in the history of the Western world: the Crusades, the Protestant Reformation, the colonization of America are phenomena which have powerful apocalyptic connotations.
Even today, the possibility of the end haunts our minds. The discovery of atomic weapons, in conjunction with the globalization of conflicts, gives this fear a rational basis.
The purpose of this documentary, its interest, is to review the history of this fear. See how and when it appeared, the modalities it took on, its manifestations. And thus put the present moment into perspective.
Over the past two thousand years, people have often believed that the end of the world was already near. This simple observation is, in itself, reassuring. However, it does not make our fears false or naive. It helps us to face this risk head on and to calmly consider possible measures to take.
