I am about 90 kilos have been windsurfing for 35 years and usually pick up boards a few years after they were new to lessen the sticker shock. I got lots of time out of my Bic Techno 183 at 152 as it was great for my lake. I have since gotten a Fanatic Viper 80 to get the most out of my 7.5 sail and to teach my son how to sail his 2.0 and 2.5 sails. I also have a Fanatic Gecko 133 with a Slingshot Foil that I can use on most days at the lake. When it's windy, I use a Free race Tiga HyperX-115 that is wide and short and just flies off the wind. I do have a few higher wind boards for special days, but I could get by with just the 115, 133 and 180 liter boards. My sails are mostly free ride, with a few cambered race sails.

I am 73 and 150 pounds- very fit. I sailed a Mistral Competition 25 years ago and recently got back into windsurfing with a Windsurfer LT Race. All lake sailing here; winds 4-20+ MPH (Ezzy 5.8 and 6.5 sails) . Stability is important at my age- but having a ball. I would like to try a lighter shorter board for faster tacking, gybing, planing etc- but want similar stability to the LT. I have looked at the Tahe 160D etc. How would you compare the shorter (say 10' or so) and wider boards with the Windsurfer LT for stability? Also absolutely require a daggerboard.

Try a JP SLW 165 litre. 58 cm fin. You won’t need a dagger board. Easy to uphaul. Super stable when slogging. Fly’s in 12- 20 kts with 6.5- 8.5 sail. You will love it. I do on the Great Lakes where conditions can change in a heart beat
I also sail a Mistral Competition, but have a Fanatic Viper 80 (180 liters) with a daggerboard that is similar feeling, yet much easier to turn. For reference, it's 280 cm long, 80 cm wide, uses a 44cm blade fin and can plane up in 12-14 knots of wind.
Wow...one of the best clips on this topic...I am thinking to get into it again after 25years hiatus and have to learn again about brands ,classes and sails. I am 6foot 2, 110kg and fairly sportive. I am looking for fast fun here on the Mediterranean sea. Waterstart and jibe experience are still alive😁 ... What would be a good board to look for ?thanks
Great video. Im a 70kg beginner. Took 2 lessons and already hooked. Thinking about starting on a Free ride board. Any suggestions as far as volume? Looking to cruise around in the Ocean when it’s 10kt+ winds.

This is just ridiculous how much kit you need for windsurfing depending on conditions, style and experience level.
Totally agree. That's why I almost stopped. Then was excited by winging at the beginning, before it became almost as complex, if not worse... I think my next watersport will be surfing, and then probably swimming 😀
Im finding it interesting. I just bought a bunch of gear for $100. Now i have three boards nine sails 2 masts and s booms. Now to figure out out where to start.
where does a slalom fit in this?
I have no experience at all but would love to start learning the waterstart to skip the high volume boards. Is a trajectory like this realistic?
Windsurfing is quite a difficult sport to learn and starting with a board that is too small is likely to lead to frustration. You'll have a lot more fun starting with a larger board.
I’m not saying its impossible to start on a smaller board, I actually learnt on a small board in strong wind, but the spot was waist deep everywhere so i could beach start. I then went up to a bigger board to learn tacking, gybing, basic freestyle which helped be progress much faster.
interesting, but what was said about needing 140-200l to uphaul on is wrong. i can uphaul on a 95l in chop, and i weigh 65kg
Yes, It's possible to uphaul small boards. You are also really light so you can start a bit smaller.
It is still our recommendation for everyone new to the sport to start with 140-200l boards to progress quickly and make it as fun as possible.

Im very close to getting back into wave sailing after 30 years. Im going to initially be sailing at Rhosneiger. I’m 90kg and I’m considering the quantum 105 or 115 as it’s been recommended as a perfect board for Rhossy. I’m only going to buy 1 board. I’m 57 years old so not as nimble as I used to be. What would you go for ?
Hello Sean, being based in Australia we're not very familiar with the conditions over there but average wind conditions that you expect to sail in would normally play a large part in the decision. However, that said, I would recommend the 115
to be on the safe side as it will float you nicely which will help you get out in moderate conditions and assist your transistion back into the sport as progressively as possible.
Modern wave boards are far shorter than the boards from 30 years ago so the larger sizes are still nice and nimble.
Hi m8. Very nice and usefull video!!! I'm a relatively new windsurfer(freeride) with not much time but I'm willing to do as much as I can. I have bought equipment and I am now in the process of changing boom. I want to buy a caron boom and I don't know what to get. My sails are from 5.5 to 7.2 (185cm-205cm) and they are all NP. I'm looking at these and I want you to recommend me: 1) DUOTONE BOOM PLATINUM SLS HYBRID 2022, 2) SEVERNE BOOM ENIGMA FREEMOVE 2022, 3) Monocoque Carbon Boom Pro White - DYNAFIBER. Also, if you have any other suggestions, thanks. I'm also trying to perfect the waterstart!!! Do you suggest i need to change the size of the board to a smaller one? I have a fanatic 145lt. Thanks for your question Fotis. A Carbon Boom is a great way to take your riding to the next level. The Duotone & Severne booms you mentioned are good choices, (We've not stocked the DYNAFIBER so can't speak to that). You may also want to look at the NeilPryde XC. The final choice will come down to feel & your budget. Get your hands on them & see what you like as they will all feel slightly different in your hands.
In regards to the board, focus on your technique & just practice, practice, practice.
