Good job as usual. I started with hammocks in '99. Used a Ridgerest for years before I even heard of an under quilt. I trimmed the corners at an angle so it would fit better in the hammock(Hennessey). Thanks so much for all you time and effort putting these videos together.
Hey Shug! Found these via Hammock Forums, just wanted to say thanks man for taking the time to make the videos - very entertaining as well as useful - you're a 'sound man' as we say here in Ireland. Looking forward to my first hammock camp!! Keep on keepin' on.
@@shugemery Ah that's just mad - I should have guessed haha!! Just moved to Tipp myself, here in Ballina (near Killaloe). I'm a Kerryman. Watching you fuss with those pads makes me want a underquilt even more. Just looks so much better and more comfortable. I'll just have to bite the bullet. "buy once, cry once" as we say in the shooting world.
Thanks Shug! Your videos have helped me a lot this year. Made the switch from the ground this spring and haven't looked back. Took my first cold weather trip a few weeks ago and used a borrowed 50 degree ENO Underquilt with a 3/4 closed cell foam pad and an inflatable Klymit Static V with no insulation. It got down to 28 degrees and I didn't have any problems with my 32 degree down sleeping bag as a topquilt. Warm and toasty! Never would have made it if it wasn't for you sharing your experience here. Really can't thank you enough!
Nice socks! I guess I fall into the superhuman category with under insulation. I have been able to sleep very well down to 55F with clothing and a synthetic bag. Gooood sleep...zzzz. Works for me, not for all. The take away here for new folks is to use what you already have first and adjust to the conditions. After a while you'll know how to dial your hammock to what works. Good stuff Shug!
I'll continue to make vids, only much more spread out. I've been making music again (in the studio last night) so my creative itch is getting scratched very well ))) A lot has changed since I begin here (more kids), but I still cherish the mingling with good folks and sharing stories. All secure!
This past weekend I camped at BSA camp baker with my Hennessy hammock. I used a closed cell foam pad cut to 3/4 of its original length, and 0 degree slumberjack sleeping bag. temp was 38 at the coldest but I was toasty warm. only problem was, got a kink in my neck from my hoodie+pillow. good video Shug!
Side sleeping...I hadn't had a good night in my gathered end hammock until I discovered my side sleeping technique, and made my UQ. Full disclosure: I never tried it on a pad before I made the UQ. Well done explanation, Sean.
Why would anyone give this a thumbs down. They just don't like to have a good time our what? This guy is awesome! I would camp anywhere with him. Good entertainment!
The side extender is great. I loved the ladder roll always you make very enjoyable vids a pleasure to watch. I find the snug pack jungle bag is a great for going over the top and round the sides of you over your normal bag and it its packs small. I use Therm-A-Rest BaseCamp Sleeping Mattress - Large its big but the most comfy pad ever and I've got all of thermalites and a fair few others. I find it's also best not to inflate your mat to much like you also say. Sometimes when on the ground on my basecame mattress I forget I'm out doors and when awaking get a shock lol maybe thats age. cheers shug great stuff
Thanks, Shug. After watching you wrestle with that homemade winged pad, you've convinced me to buy the Klymit insulated Hammock V sleeping pad that I've been looking at. Keep hanging. Brum
Your the all great hammock teacher. I doubt if I ever will but would love to go camping with you sometime Shug. If you ever come down south I would surely like to meet you. Thanks Shug. Keep it up.
+shugemery Yeah, I get that you look after all hammockers young and old! Its good to get both options out there for people to make up their own mind. 8-)
Hello mate, This has to be the best YT channel out there. Extremely informative and educational plus very funny. I just love your presentation. You definitely need to have your own TV show. I'm so glad that I have found this channel. Just subscribed. Take care.Best regards Steve from London UK.
If you tie a us army poncho liner on an angle from hammock end to end it makes a nice cheap underquilt thats very light. Ive never been hammocking out in snow cold before but its been very cold in nights and mornings and it is enough to sleep comfortably in a 30 degree bag and no bug net. The material really cuts the breeze from underneath.
Great video as always! I thought you hit pretty much all the major points with just one exception: tucking the pad into your quilt footbox or sleeping bag to keep it from moving around.
awesome video thanks. I also use a thermol lite but I use it inside my sleeping bag, it doesn't slide out underneath me and i have no problem with condensation. Really works well with my hennessy explorer. Love your channel
i sleep straight in hammock and i use 3-4" cheap air pad till blow ;)) now i got 2.8" exped synmat UL medium wide 27F pad..and rid off my DD jungle hammock got outdoorvitals ultra light hammock..will test next Friday..
Shug I Gorilla taped some paracord to a reflective pad/ truck windshield sun reflector. I tie it to the head end of the hammock. It not only doesn’t slip down but is easier to reposition from side to side. Love your vids. Reflectix good down to 30F for me.
I love camping and i must say that you have helped me to try whintercamping and more, so ty so much for everything! I have made a some underquilts from old sleepingbags and they work great.
I bought a GI bivy sack and put my Klymit Static V blow up pad and sleeping bag in it. The bivy sack keeps everything together, keeps things dry, adds a bit of warmth, but still breaths. Camping at 11,800' in elevation in a hammock between two trees in a lightening storm is a formula for a lightning conductivity test, not anywhere I wanted to be. Grabbing the bivy with everything in it. I ran out to an open field away from trees. tossed the bivy down, a few extra puffs of air into the pad and I had quickly moved my sleeping arrangements to someplace safer. Needless to say, I'm all about the bivy sack now. My wife and two daughters each got a bivy sack from Santa last Christmas.
Great info Shug. Always entertaining! On a side note, Did the Carribou Rock Trail last week up to Border Route, thanks to your info. All I can say is whoooo buddy! Cant wait for some winter trekking!
EXACTLY... what you said about not twisting and turning as much in a hammock! Honestly this was the #1 reason I didn't get into hammock camping for so long,. I figured if I used my pads, because the amount I generally toss and turn it would be a PITA keeping the pad in place. So I figured if I was going to go hammock, I would have to buy all the hammock gear plus an underquilt, which is a huge investment. Well this spring I decided I'd buy the hammock and use it on one trip with a pad, and if I liked the hammock then I'd convince myself to splurge on an underquilt. Well to my surprise not only did i love the hammock but I still haven't bothered getting an underquilt because the pad works just fine for me! And like you, I sleep like the dead in that thing where usually i'm a tosser. I'm sure its not as nice as a hammock with an underquilt, but its still loads and loads better than a pad on the ground!
+Out of the Closet. Into the Woods. I barely move! Maybe a bit in the morn. I'll do 1/4 turn or so for 5 minutes. Glad your loving the sleep of the dead in the piney woods. The best nod ever.
i set up my hammock in the Rocky Mountains with a tarp over top like a legit jungle shelter during a few stormy days we were having... well i stayed dry as a bone but it got down to 40 degrees and I cant say Ive ever been colder at night even sleeping in my 20 degree bag!
I was looking for information on hammocks and pads etc cause im thinking of switching from tents ... not only did I get some good knowledge but very entertaining as well.. enjoyed your video !!
Shug You went to a under quilt after you tried pads. that tells me that if i want to be comfortable at my age I don't want to mess with pads. thanks for your experience
Thank you for confirming my thought process on this! I figured that it would be a lot like this. Now to figure out the bag... (Yay arthritis and cold allergies. Swollen joints and muscles are no fun in the morning)
Shug, you're a mind reader! I just bought a blackbird and will be doing a test run next weekend. I was going to try and figure out camping pads this weekend! Thanks for the video!
Been using my Thermarest ridge line pad in my hammock setup. Works great.. but got way too hot with the shiny side up though. hahaha Still so glad you and "Niel's in.." talked me into going the way of the hammock. I only have one quick hammock video up so far... but had many trips and many of the most comfortable rests I have ever had this year. More to come as soon as I can order a nice winter tarp. The ENO Housefly is looking wonderful.
First hammock trip and I use my Exped Synmat LW. I was completely miserable most of the night. The hammock edge kept working its way under the pad almost to my knees. Almost dumped me a couple of times when I pushed down on my heels to adjust. My back also got pretty cold for most of the night. The Exped is rated to 27 deg and I think the temps were in the mid to upper 30s. Also felt like I was fighting the pad all night. Going to sideline the hammock for now until I can get an under quilt.
+2006Whippet UQs rule for sure. Sound like a short hammock. Those pads lose some rating in a hammock as they are not on the ground. I feel you may lose 10º or so.
+shugemery It's an 11 foot hammock but, I'm also 6'5. That might have something to do with it. I pretty much guessed I wasn't going to get the full temp rating in a hammock.
So far I'm a big fan of the insulated blow up pad's versatility. If on your expedition you wake up on somebody's floor covered with cans & pizza boxes, your trusty pad is underneath you so well you dreampt you were in a great palace. I also like how the pad pushes the fabric of the hammock a bit from pinching right against your arms. Want to stay on the beach or underneath a neat spruce roof--no problem--pitch out your buddy the pad & get a different position from all the nights in the hammock. I've paddled clear across lakes on my trusty Klymit. I just consider the dang pad so versatile I can't get rid of it. The Achilles Heel on mine (R4.4) is anything below 20F is downright cold. So even though I could get an underquilt, my solution has recently been to spend my few dollars on the supposedly awesome Exped Downmat (R8). I think its mummy shape will keep the pad mostly inflated under my back, as opposed to how the air can rush to the head & foot end of a square pad. We'll see how it goes. For real, real cold I still carry a couple small wings of solid foam about the size to stuff in my pack for my arms. Great video: I'm thinking of making a wing thing for my pad, something that helps absorb sweat & add a touch of warmth & comfort to my nylon home in the bushes.
+Shugemery Was in Deer camp a couple of weeks ago and seeing several members of the camp sleeping in hammocks during the day got me thinking about you and your videos Shuge... Keep on trekking buddy.
Hi Shug, thanks for showing. For me the wide version of an air mat is perfect. You using the REI Co-op Stratus Insulated Air Sleeping Pad, in Germany we have similar with similar pricing. Nice Sunday (or monday). Regarding from the German Lower Mountain Range the Eifel. Alex
Double layer along with bridge hammock is way to go your air mattress doesn’t slip. A lot of lightweight backpackers using reflex basically silver Mylar light 1/4 roofing padding it reflects your heat back up to your body. It is relatively cheap and easy packing. You could line your hammock then with light weight survival blanket if you needed to.
shugemery I agree with underquilt for the hammock ....it’s definitely a must. I found a cheap one at REI that was like $60 on sale. And with the double layer I can slide sleep pad separate pocket. So far haven’t slept out in below 40 degree weather yet. Will let you know how cold l can go, I was planning on trying some cold weather hammocking over year in PA, but we only get to like 20 degree nites.....not like your minus 20 over there where you are. Do you have any videos on how to choose where to hang your hammock? Like behind a hill, or next to fir trees for wind break, or in winter hang hammock close to ground...less space like 2ft off ground less wind or air under you....I know that is a little exgerated. Liked your last video I seen -20 wearing multi layers and baklava. Keep up good work and hang in there.
I subscribed when you screamed at the airplane ✈️ because it's what I would have done. Also, this was the content I was looking for. I'm determined to try and do most of the AT in a hammock if possible.
I use a Thermarest Neolite Air in my ENO Doublenest. Works great. Just used it in Ouachita National Forest (11/6-11/8 2015)... it got down to 50. DEFINITELY needed the pad. I STRONGLY suggest you get a sleep system that incorporates the sleeping pad into your sleeping bag, otherwise you'll be rolling off of it at night. For example, I have a Nemo Stratoloft, which zips the air mattress (making it the bottom of the bag)... that was you stay on it
+shugemery Ok. I agree that under quilts are the best solution. I fall into the "people who use a pad instead"...my post was just to reemphasize that you can't roll around. by the way, you were my inspiration to hammock camp. thanks! :)
WOW Shug, I was #495 likes and 0 dislikes. You must be doing something right. GREAT review of hammock pads and ideas on what may work for us. All types of options and something to fit all budgets. Thanks
I can't help but think something evil is brewing in sector 8. Great video Shug. Bought my first hammock at REI today finally. Can't wait to try it out, hopefully CBS free.
I use a pad in the cold months (that´s like 8-9 months of the year here in the backwoods of the world lol) and an underquilt in the warm months. I only have a light underquilt and I never bothered to get a warmer one since a pad is also very comfortable, and my pad is four seasons capable.
+Ali Leiniö How low of a temp have you gotten with your pad?
9 років тому
+shugemery Only at around -5C so far...that´s 23 Fahrenheit. My pad is the Therm-a-rest Xtherm so it should be very good for a lot colder weather too. Before this pad I had a three seasons pad, and I used it up to around -15C (5 degrees Fahrenheit). Thanks for the video and cheers from Finland!
As always, I gave away my yoga pad ‘cause hadn’t used it in 10 yrs. Now, I could have used in my hammock & am using my expensive Big Agnes inflating mat.
Yoga pads cause a lot of condensation in my experience. Most pads do as they are vapor barriers but better than nothing. A UQ is the best way to go if you plan to go with hammocks all the way.
I've now spent a couple of nights out in my set up and it totally rocks. I am now looking at Outdoor Vitals sleeping bag/underquilt/hammock bag and I think that I may get one of those.
I slept out in it last week as a test. Did not film, just getting to know it. Got down to 23ºF. They sent me the 20º Aerie. Set it up as a UQ and a pod to see how it hung. As a pod it is pretty good...you can get on an angle in the hammock. I'm 6' and was ok. As in most pods there is a gap up by the head over left shoulder for me. But slip a TQ inside and you could for sure get down to some colder temps. As a UQ you have to set it up just right. I stretched my suspension tightly and hooked it up by cinch buckles on hammock suspension to get it to stretch out and get it to come up right against my buttocks and back. Slept in a partial pod arrangement. Set up like pod but unzipped to knees. Seemed to work best. Kept the bottom up against me that way. I crawled in around 10PM and slept warm until about 4:30 AM. Started to get a bit cold on the buttocks then. As it functions in a bag, pod and UQ and blanket so the 18 ounces of down gets distributed on top, sides and bottom. Less on the bottom as a normal 20º UQ. The beauty of the Aerie is that a person can use it an a bag, pod, UQ or top blanket. Zippers are a bit sticky...you have to be vigilant in holding back the inner zip tape and top flap. I hate zippers! Seems to be baffled and not sewn through. All in all a fairly good piece of gear for all that it does. If looking for JUST a UQ then I don't think this is it. But if needed a piece of gear that is Multi Function then for the price it is pretty good. Made in China.
The multi-functionality of it is what caused me to look into it. The thing that keeps me from pulling the trigger is that I am (a "BigFoot") 6'5" and 350 lbs. and I worry about the size. It is supposed to be only 6' long. The owner says that they are planning on making a larger model, but it will be a while. Thanks for your reply!
Great info! I don't have a double layer hammock either but my hammocks have mosquito netting that I don't need in the winter so I'm thinking I could slide the pad between the netting and the hammock when I turn it over for colder weather camping. Thanks for sharing the video!
shugemery btw I live in the Gorge(wooo buddy!), and am friends with “Hickery”. I made some shot glasses containing the ashes of “Running Feather” that passed away on Conley Cove a few years back. Wanted all Rats and associates that might have known him to have one. I think I gave Hickery one for you this last Rat week. Lol Maybe one day I’ll meet the famous Shug!
I have a DD Hamocks underquilt, I have not been over the moon about it, even in Australia with our nights at most getting down to +10c I was getting a cold ass no matter how it was set up. Going to try with pads for two reasons, 1 it may be better then the underquilt I have, and 2 it gives me the option of bivvying if I am so inclined.
More than likely have a gap under your buttocks with that UQ. Synthetic is not as warm to me than goose or duck down though that is not the case for everyone. My UQ playlist....ua-cam.com/play/PLahaAdtfX9ZKzSYSBm3mBYSPGHjdyGqsL.html
3m velcro and a sheet of foil backed thin fleece blanket the stuff you can buy in matt sized pieces for picnics, in between the double layered like the DD Frontline, works a treat, and doesn't move. The only downside is, you might have to buy a larger stuff sack to fit it in, unless you don't mind taking it in and out every time you set up, and pack up.
Great video. I use a car windshield reflector, but it slides around like crazy. Something to widen it at the shoulders and stop it from slipping would make things easier. Great video. Love your energy. Subbed.
So glad you finally covered thus topic! A few weeks ago I used my exped synmat 25" wide and was very impressed with the warmth and comfy-ness. But that is in a Hennessey, can't wit to get that WBBB 11 footer, I just need more space!
Oh my. I'm already starting at the wrong end...I got the underquilt (HammockGear) before a hammock - I happened on one (instant gratification) - and I haven't decided on which hammock yet (although I'm leaning toward a Chameleon when it's available). I have to say though, your demo here has validated my purchase, not sure I even like the sound of the foam and I don't think I'd like the texture. I simply want to get in and float, warmly and freely. Thank you Shug for all the knowledge and demos.
Absolutely awesome! I too plan on using my thermarest to start. I was thinking of supplementing with reflectix since I've got it. Thanks for the heads up about condensation.

Dunno if you read comments on a seven-year-old video, but here goes. Just wondered if you ever tried a lightweight mostly wool pad between the layers of a two-layer hammock -- either a 3# wool military blanket or a 1/8" felt pad with high wool content. Presumably, either would be breathable (less potential condensation), would have good thermal properties and, if it's a blanket, in an emergency it could function as a wraparound.
I never did but went through many trials working my way to finally using under quilts as I am a dedicated hammock camper. Once you go under quilt you never look back.
Thanks for the video, Shug. No underquilt for me yet so I have experimented with Reflectix and also my Thermarest inflatable pad. I'm still working the bugs out and your video was helpful. By the way, it's good to see that no Shugs were hurt during the filming of that ladder dismount. ;)
I think I'll give Hammock winter camping a go this year at Afton. I've got all the gear but a hammock, well I have a ENO hammock but not sure if that'd work.
Have not had the chance to use a pad.!like my under quilt but that is a good option mabe on colder nights down below freezing i would use one for extra warmth
I Like a pad, at times, when kind of flat ground and no trees etc, on the ground with tarp I still have padding. & DIY $30, down throw, & Tarp clamps, make an Underquilt.
Well I finally got to use my hammok last week. My back loved it! I still tossed and turned but it was because my legs hurt with the arc going against the bend of my knees. I couldn't figure out the angle sleeping. I slept for a week right down the middle. Used my Thermarest. May need to use my air mattress once to see how it goes. Thanks!
I'm super new to hammocks, but one thing I have noticed is if I try and setup the hammock too tight thinking I Will get a flatter lay, It will actually achieve the opposite and will exacerbate the reverse bending of legs.
I can't seem to stay on an angle. I'll keep trying. Also I asked Dutch to show us how to use Dutch Buckles. Mine slipped when I sat in my hammock. There has to be a way to set it up. Grr. Maybe my setup isn't right.
If you are running with double hammock.... Pine branches/dry leaves etc... Gives you pretty good insulation... Better than underguilt If you do it right..
What if all you have are wet leaves? I tend to really like my under quilts. Used to be a very popular technique called the Garlington insulator. Similar to your idea.
I have a claytor jungle hammock with the pad sleeve in the bottom. When it's cool I use one of my big agnes insulated pads and either slide it in the pocket or just use it in my big agnes lost ranger. It works best just using the pad inside the bag as it is always under you that way. I side sleep 90% of the time and I still tent camp sometimes but always feel like crap in the morning. When I sleep in the hammock I feel so much more rested. The reason I tent camp still is because I motorcycle camp most of the time so I am never 100% sure there will be suitable trees for the hammock, I need to get comfortable tarp camping so that I can just use the tarp if there aren't trees around.
Setting a tarp on ground is not very hard to master. Carry forth....see mine on the ground at 11:00 in this video...ua-cam.com/video/FJLBHEGQFwk/v-deo.html
Thanks, I will take a look at it. Have you ever setup a hammock itself on the ground? I had thought about trying to figure out a way to do it with my Claytor so that I would have netting for some protection from the bugs.
Can be done.......hammock ground by Sean Emery, on Flickr

Thanks Shug! Your videos have helped me a lot this year. Made the switch from the ground this spring and haven't looked back. Took my first cold weather trip a few weeks ago and used a borrowed 50 degree ENO Underquilt with a 3/4 closed cell foam pad and an inflatable Klymit Static V with no insulation. It got down to 28 degrees and I didn't have any problems with my 32 degree down sleeping bag as a topquilt. Warm and toasty! Never would have made it if it wasn't for you sharing your experience here. Really can't thank you enough!

+CampfireTalk Good to hear...many do actually. Are you done making vids? I know it gets tough to maintain.
I'll continue to make vids, only much more spread out. I've been making music again (in the studio last night) so my creative itch is getting scratched very well )))
A lot has changed since I begin here (more kids), but I still cherish the mingling with good folks and sharing stories.
All secure!
Shug you are the chit. I've watched your stuff from day one and I tune in regularly to see if you have new stuff. Thanks for what you do!
+Jimmy Rogers Thankee.
+Don Kelly Good to hear on the warmth...not so much on the neck.
Side sleeping...I hadn't had a good night in my gathered end hammock until I discovered my side sleeping technique, and made my UQ. Full disclosure: I never tried it on a pad before I made the UQ.
Well done explanation, Sean.
+Bruce Hodson I am a UQ guy all the way.
+Mossy Bark Yessir.
Thanks, Shug. After watching you wrestle with that homemade winged pad, you've convinced me to buy the Klymit insulated Hammock V sleeping pad that I've been looking at. Keep hanging. Brum
That is a cool and big pad. Like to see one packed when deflated. But will keep those shoulders and arms warm for sure.
Your the all great hammock teacher. I doubt if I ever will but would love to go camping with you sometime Shug. If you ever come down south I would surely like to meet you. Thanks Shug. Keep it up.
All I can do to get out with my good friends sometimes!
This video proves why I am going to stick with under quilts! Thanks for the info Shug, this is good info. 😃
+Richard Thompson I am an underquilt guy myself but want to help the new-to-hammock bunch that seem to get a bit perplexed at options and insulation.
Thankee....this is my own TV show. No pressure. Jellied eels for all.
Howdy there Shug ! It's been too long since I've seen any of your videos. Refreshing and informative as always. Great to see you again.
Whoooooo Buddy)))))
Thanks for your reply. Tomorrow, Sunday is Jellied eels day along with shrimps, winkles and a nice sweet crab. Yummy yum. Take care mate. atb Steve
Dare I ask what a winkle is???
Great video for all of us hanging on a tight budget.
Keep it up and long live the maple king.
+Dan Weiss No excuses! So says the Maple King.
+shugemery let it be written. ..let it be done.
getting info across while being very entertaining makes a great youtube channel.
Thankee Sam
If you tie a us army poncho liner on an angle from hammock end to end it makes a nice cheap underquilt thats very light. Ive never been hammocking out in snow cold before but its been very cold in nights and mornings and it is enough to sleep comfortably in a 30 degree bag and no bug net. The material really cuts the breeze from underneath.
Cutting that breeze is good and fine.
Great video as always! I thought you hit pretty much all the major points with just one exception: tucking the pad into your quilt footbox or sleeping bag to keep it from moving around.
+Kurt Papke One can never cover it all. I do have that info on another video and was going to cover it in an upcoming video on top quilts.
awesome video thanks. I also use a thermol lite but I use it inside my sleeping bag, it doesn't slide out underneath me and i have no problem with condensation. Really works well with my hennessy explorer. Love your channel
+Jack Gray Yessir....that is it.
i sleep straight in hammock and i use 3-4" cheap air pad till blow ;)) now i got 2.8" exped synmat UL medium wide 27F pad..and rid off my DD jungle hammock got outdoorvitals ultra light hammock..will test next Friday..
Righto~~~
Shug I Gorilla taped some paracord to a reflective pad/ truck windshield sun reflector. I tie it to the head end of the hammock. It not only doesn’t slip down but is easier to reposition from side to side. Love your vids. Reflectix good down to 30F for me.
Good on ye' feller! Whooooo Buddy)))))
This guys hlarious!! Ought to be a stand up comic.
I love camping and i must say that you have helped me to try whintercamping and more, so ty so much for everything!
I have made a some underquilts from old sleepingbags and they work great.
+Jimmy Eklund Winter is long....good time to get out and enjoy.
True winter is long here in Luleå norrland sweden.
i guess we will have some great northernlights this winter.
As long as you are comfy and happy.....
shugemery ...and safe.
There are certainly a lot of hammocking hacks. Thanks for sharing yours.
Great info Shug. Always entertaining! On a side note, Did the Carribou Rock Trail last week up to Border Route, thanks to your info. All I can say is whoooo buddy! Cant wait for some winter trekking!
+Chuck Reetz Caribou.....great. Winter looms.
Genius! I am a Shuge fan from now on! Woooooooo! And I like the Linville Gorge, too. But mostly the downhill parts...
Whoooooo Buddy)))))
EXACTLY... what you said about not twisting and turning as much in a hammock!
Great video... You answered all my questions about hammock camping with out an undetquilt... Great humor as well.... Cheers mate!
Glad it gave some insight. Pad on....
Love your videos your class , all are very informative ,, fun to watch . greetings from Cornwall UK 👍👍👍👍
Thankee.... a cuppa and Flakes for all~~~!
i set up my hammock in the Rocky Mountains with a tarp over top like a legit jungle shelter during a few stormy days we were having... well i stayed dry as a bone but it got down to 40 degrees and I cant say Ive ever been colder at night even sleeping in my 20 degree bag!
At a certain point laying in that bag in a hammock with the compressed down under you will fail. Thus the pad or underquilt to the rescue.
I was looking for information on hammocks and pads etc cause im thinking of switching from tents ... not only did I get some good knowledge but very entertaining as well.. enjoyed your video !!
Mucho obligato.
Thank you SIR! New to hammock camping so I truly appreciate your education.
Whooooo Buddy)))) Enjoy the hammock quest.
Shug You went to a under quilt after you tried pads. that tells me that if i want to be comfortable at my age I don't want to mess with pads. thanks for your experience
So many that can't afford a good UQ but they have pads. Once you go UQ...you never look back.
All Secure in Sector Seven! What, me worry? Thanks Shug!!!!!!
+Alfred E Neuman money is honey my little sonny and a rich man's joke is always funny. Alfred E. Newman circa 1970
Thank you for confirming my thought process on this! I figured that it would be a lot like this. Now to figure out the bag... (Yay arthritis and cold allergies. Swollen joints and muscles are no fun in the morning)
+Cassandra Sherman Carry forth and be gone with the ailments!
Shug, you're a mind reader! I just bought a blackbird and will be doing a test run next weekend. I was going to try and figure out camping pads this weekend! Thanks for the video!
+jldodd Carry forth.....
+TWiGs ADV (Chris) Check the Superfly too....www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/superfly/
***** That is another I was looking at. About the same price.
+Livin'Large Power to the Pad feller!
There's no place like FOAM ! Good Advice and ideas it is great to have so many options...i like a mini pillow behind the occipital.
+atommachine Rest the noggin an life is dreamy
+Shugemery Was in Deer camp a couple of weeks ago and seeing several members of the camp sleeping in hammocks during the day got me thinking about you and your videos Shuge... Keep on trekking buddy.
+portuge83 Whoooooo Buddy))))
Hi Shug, thanks for showing. For me the wide version of an air mat is perfect. You using the REI Co-op Stratus Insulated Air Sleeping Pad, in Germany we have similar with similar pricing. Nice Sunday (or monday). Regarding from the German Lower Mountain Range the Eifel. Alex
Danke and Whooooo Buddy)))) Had a great time in Munich 4 years ago as my wife and I went to see my daughter perform in GOP Variety show.
Righto. It does get some condensation though. That is why I went underquilt and never looked back.
shugemery I agree with underquilt for the hammock ....it’s definitely a must.
I am new to hammock camping Thank you for instruction on the pads. Love you videos they are so informative!
I'm glad the video was useful. Hammock on~~~~
I subscribed when you screamed at the airplane ✈️ because it's what I would have done.
Also, this was the content I was looking for. I'm determined to try and do most of the AT in a hammock if possible.
Hope it gives some insight for your hammock quest.
@@shugemery It was very helpful 🙂
Thanks Shut. Down here in Georgia, I going to try a pad on top of some reflectix.
+Chip Sanford Sleep warm!
For example, I have a Nemo Stratoloft, which zips the air mattress (making it the bottom of the bag)... that was you stay on it
+adroitredtiger I use an underquilt mostly. Just wantd to show pads for some folks I have seen struggling with it.
+shugemery Ok. I agree that under quilts are the best solution. I fall into the "people who use a pad instead"...my post was just to reemphasize that you can't roll around. by the way, you were my inspiration to hammock camp. thanks! :)
Just stumbled across this video and you are definitely one the most interesting and fun to watch
Thanks and Whoooooo Buddy)))))
I've even used a life jacket in a pinch while up there canoeing... great advice.
Whooooo Buddy))))
This guy gets me laughing out loud. God bless his heart. That alone is worth the price of admission
Whooooooo Buddy))))))
Awesome video Shug! I use both, pads and underquilts in very cold temperatures. Cheers, Marc
+Scouting Free That'll get you down there for sure.
WOW Shug, I was #495 likes and 0 dislikes. You must be doing something right.
GREAT review of hammock pads and ideas on what may work for us. All types of options and something to fit all budgets.
Thanks
+Sebastopolmark Yessir. and I thank ya'.
I can't help but think something evil is brewing in sector 8. Great video Shug. Bought my first hammock at REI today finally. Can't wait to try it out, hopefully CBS free.
Carry forth and enjoy the comfort quest....
+shugemery Only at around -5C so far...that´s 23 Fahrenheit. My pad is the Therm-a-rest Xtherm so it should be very good for a lot colder weather too. Before this pad I had a three seasons pad, and I used it up to around -15C (5 degrees Fahrenheit).
Thanks for the video and cheers from Finland!
+Ali Leiniö Good to know. Kittos!
Thanks Shug! Glad to know that I have chosen the right sleeping pad for both my tent and my hammock. Your great!
+Jon Cothran Yessir.
+SL's Prepping and Survival That oughta do it. Thankee.
I love ❤️ my blow up Exped pad! Worked much better than my homemade under quilt!
They do make a nice pad for sure.
shugemery btw I live in the Gorge(wooo buddy!), and am friends with “Hickery”. I made some shot glasses containing the ashes of “Running Feather” that passed away on Conley Cove a few years back. Wanted all Rats and associates that might have known him to have one. I think I gave Hickery one for you this last Rat week. Lol Maybe one day I’ll meet the famous Shug!
He told me about those. I'll be seeing him in the Fall.
There ya' go!
I was just going to take a bag of hot air with we and let a little out when it cooled down to keep me warm. But I'm liken your ideas better.
+NAHAAFB I am a bag of hot air!
This guy is the man! Love the commentary!
Great video. I use a car windshield reflector, but it slides around like crazy. Something to widen it at the shoulders and stop it from slipping would make things easier. Great video. Love your energy. Subbed.
Whoooooo Buddy)))))
the car windshield reflector never worked for me, but my yoga pad worked great!
Awesome advice. Thanks!
+The Late Boy Scout Y'elcome
Nice wheel hoss at the end there! I hammock camp and play mandolin too, hope to see you at a hammock hang some time and do some pickin!
Pick and hang on feller!
Shug, you are awesome!!! Wish to meet you one day and pick your brain. Thanks for the laughs!
I ain't got much brain left to pick.
So glad you finally covered thus topic!
A few weeks ago I used my exped synmat 25" wide and was very impressed with the warmth and comfy-ness. But that is in a Hennessey, can't wit to get that WBBB 11 footer, I just need more space!
+7frazier Yessir!
Good choice on UQ. Enjoy the comfort quest!
Absolutely awesome! I too plan on using my thermarest to start. I was thinking of supplementing with reflectix since I've got it. Thanks for the heads up about condensation.
+Sinfonian Barelytone May the warmth be with you.
I love these videos. I was up all night watching.😀
Get some sleep. Hope you don't have nightmares.

By the way, it's good to see that no Shugs were hurt during the filming of that ladder dismount. ;)
+Great Lakes Backpacker Good to hear and thankee.
YOU ARE A SILLY BOY, LIKE A FUNNY CLOWNY PERSON!!! I LIKE!
I am very serious off camera.
Haha I cannot image how serious you could become off camera! SCARY, PROFOUND serious I bet! Thanks for the videos :)
All clear in Sector 7.
I reckon it beats a Sears Roebuck shed, I like the way u fell off that ladder, yessir.
Whoooooo Buddy))) Still have some Craftsman tools of my Dad's.
I think I'll give Hammock winter camping a go this year at Afton. I've got all the gear but a hammock, well I have a ENO hammock but not sure if that'd work.
+Michael Mulville The ENO should work just fine. Easy walk into Afton backpacking spots.
Yeah buddy! Thanks ;-)
Whooooo Buddy))))
You sir, got some serious ninja hammock skills !!!
Cheers
Clown Ninja! Thankee
Thumbs up in the first second of the video... Just because of that fall! Epic!!
+Simon Lauzon Thanks feller. Took one for the team on that.
Thumbs up before i even watched, this friggin guy is the bees knees......just so fun watchin...ya know!!!!
I thankee for that.
Thanks!
Sleeping on an angle will reduce that. Or a stuff sack or pillow under the knees.
theultimatehang.com/2012/05/the-truth-about-hammock-camping-claim-2-hammocks-are-comfortable/
Hey Shug. i been away a while. miss your humor, and your sharing the knowledge. i hope all is well in your sector :)
All secure here in sector seven....and working.
Thanks Shug your videos have been invaluable to designing my system.more than anything else.
Green t shirt...green t shirt
+greg Whoooooo Buddy)))))) Green may come someday but it'll be a while before I sell them again.
Can be done.......hammock ground by Sean Emery, on Flickr

hahahah. You are hilarious! Just got a simple hammock. Was looking to see how to hang it. I've never been in one. Not really looking to sleep in one, but wanted to learn something. Didn't know about sleeping at an angle. Makes sense. This was really entertaining.
I thankee for fine words.
