Program Notes, by Rowan Bendall
From uncertain beginnings, as a last minute effort to release a Christmas Special for TV, producer Lee Mendelsohn - a long time admirer of the wonderful cartoons of Charles Schultz - was determined to bring the much loved characters of Snoopy, Charlie Brown and all of the Peanuts gang, to the small screen in the form of A Charlie Brown Christmas, which first aired on December 9th 1965. An admirer of Jazz musical styles, especially the recently emerged Bossa Nova, Mendelsohn made the unusual, but inspired, decision to team up with jazz pianist and composer, Vince Guaraldi who wrote the now famous iconic tunes “Christmas Time is Here” and “Linus and Lucy”. Despite the TV network executives’ misgivings, Guaraldi’s instantly hummable tunes, with their laid back, almost nostalgic, feel, combined with the well-known and delightful drawings and down-to earth characters of Schultz’s cartoons and a gentle, refreshingly real-life story with a positive Christmas message, ensured the movie’s instant success, it’s popularity with viewers, young and old, still as strong today.
Feeling down and disillusioned by the commercialism of Christmas he sees all around him, and in all of his friends - even Snoopy - Charlie Brown tries to find a deeper meaning to Christmas. After his friends mock him for trying to direct their Christmas play, and choosing the smallest and most humble tree as a centrepiece, it is Linus who, by telling the story of the first Christmas, helps Charlie Brown discover some Christmas magic and they go off together to decorate their little tree.
🎻🎄🎉Merry Christmas to all of you!
