Thank you, you were the only person here with enough decency to answer my question and no I do not have any military experience since my country doesn't have a military
I remember hearing about a veteran that was there that had a tough time standing, couldn't stand for to long but he stood as long as he could and before the guard left he saluted the old man for even trying. This is undoubtedly the most honorable job in the world.
People who hate on this. For 80 years this tomb has stood, people watching and most respecting. This tomb is to dedicate those who come home fallen without a name. They do not do it for the money, nor the recognition, they do it for them, the unknowns. Many sentinels say "Walk the mat a few times, and you will understand why we are out there."
Damn RIGHT they're guarding the tomb in the rain! They're guarding and respecting the souls of those who did and will continue to ensure you're freedom. This isn't their job...it's their pleasure and duty. So many today think that our way of life was won through politics and procedure. You couldn't be more wrong. It was won through sacrifice of life. This isn't a ceremony...it's a right. I only wish that I would be selected for the honor. I thank you men for properly honoring those souls
In 1921 an unidentified U.S. soldier was put to rest in a marble tomb. The purpose of this was to honor every the soldiers who's bodies couldn't be identified. It is a testament to those men and women who have died without a name. They gave more than just their life for their country, they gave their identity. That's their story. To be a guard of the tomb is one of the highest honors any soldier can receive. These men fulfill this duty even through hurricanes.
its basically for the respect of those soldiers who died in battle but were not able to be identified. ease up man.... btw, its a HUGE deal to put this on a resume or to have this on your military record. it takes an extreme amount of dedication and preparation to be one of these guards.
It was introduced for all our American troops that never made it back to the states if their bodies were never found or the dog tags were gone. It stands as a monument to those who never made it back in the pine box. They all have my respects who served and died.
I hear where you coming from, but I see a difference. The man that fasts and meditates for 50 years would be doing that for himself. These men are committing to a 2, 3 year stint?...which involves a very difficult military display for an unknown American killed in action. This is not unusual to the Americans, the Brits and Russians (to name 2) have an honor guard like this. It's an impressive show of attention to detail, professionalism, dedication, timing, military bearing, and NEAR perfection!
I notice that, in inclement weather, there seems to be a quick version to the change and the standard. Considering some I have seen here on UA-cam, especially the one in the blizzard, it's perfectly understandable.
Are the routines modified during inclement weather in any way to guard against errors caused by wet or icy pavement, slick surfaces on the rifles, etc?
24/7 for DECADES! Cold, Heat it doesn't matter. When the weather in the D.C. area is most brutal (winter/summer) they walk a 30 minute post, all other times is 60 minutes. Night is different, a 120 post in a small shelter (at about 3:30). On of my favorite places!
THATS BC WE ARE AMAZING ! and all branches pay respect to unknow soldiers! its amazing what loving your country means to some ppl im going to be them one day!
Its not about prestige. Its about honoring our soldiers not just the unknown soldiers but all the ones who are mia. Everything in the ceremony has meaning the number of steps they take and how long the wait to change direction. People who say this job is stupid or pointless you need to think of the families of soldiers who were never found and how they feel their family member is honored here
As I said, they most definantly do deserve respect. I'm ashamed of the Americans that would go there and be so disrespectful. However, my point wasn't the guards, but what they are guarding. The Royal Family are important, but the respect we show isn't only for the guards on duty, but mainly for what they are guarding. Take the emphisis off the guard and on what they are guarding.
Tell them Mr. Fullard. People need to learn about honor, respect and sacrifice. This is part of what makes this country great. It is a country of laws, honor, dedication, order and respect. I am a proud Naturalized U.S. Citizen.
These guys have been standing guard 24/7 since July 2, 1937!!!!!!!!!!! When I see a video of changing of the guard during a storm, this is NOT what I expected. Most of you people won't give a shit, but our United States Army 3rd Infantry Regiment is, and has been professionally, honorably, and meticulously been guarding the tomb with precision, professionalism, and dedication. These troops should be honored by all Americans for their solemn duty to guard to tomb of the American unknown soldier.
I suppose for the same reason that some people ride motorcycles or climb mountains. They love it. For the rest of their lives they can say that they were part of the most elite unit in the United States Army. That is something you cannot buy. You asked a valid question. I hope I gave a respectful answer.
Finally the soldiers you r watching,VOLUNTEER.Thats right, they volunteer for this privilege. So before you belittle what you see,ask a vet.Ask someone that lost a loved one.A loved one that never returned. That disappeared .It gives comfort to think, your lost one may rest in this Tomb. Its not a creepy Duty.
I'm not tryin to hate or anything but I wonder if any of those guys have ever slipped while walking or doing their tap thing. especially in the rain or snow.
Do any of you ,commenting here have anybody that served? Some of these comments convince me that there is no hope. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is for all of those unidentified dead soldiers. They also made the ultimate sacrifice.Who were they? This Tomb honours them ,their service, their sacrifice. Most importantly, this tomb represents the final resting place of a an American soldier. There are families, who have no idea of the final disposition of some lost relative, who went off to serve .
For those who don't know, this tomb is for US soldiers that have died in duty, but never identified. These men are buried and protected 24-7 by the USMC guards as respect for their service to their country.
It is Army, excuse me. According to Wikipedia, it has been guarded continuously since midnight of 1937 July 2 - regardless of inclement weather, war, or terrorist attacks.
How is it boring. These people are respecting the dead that never got the credit they deserved, to anyone who knows or is a military member, they find it an honor to winess and/or guard the Tomb.
@726clayland the reason the man checks the chamber is because you never hand the inspector a loaded weapon and you check the chamber before doing so, i did this when i was in ROTC and shit
what happens if someone walks on to the tomb will he get shot? just a young man asking a simple question please no sarcastic answers its ala wys been a wonder of mine
These guys stay here 24 hours a day 365 days a years no matter what happens. They stood guard even when they could see the smoke and flames coming from the pentagon on 9/11.
To all those leaving negative comments: please remember the soldiers whose honor is being guarded died so you could have the opportunity leave those comments.
The guard was posted after the commanding officer of the cMD discovered that tourists were using the tomb as a picnic table. Hence 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
@lukesfist its just my apinion like in your u see army im shore as the best and i respect that its just my hole famly has been in the marine exept my dad who was in the 173 air born bergade in operation desert storm i respect u for wat u have dun for this country thank u
Although many Sentinels have been deployed and continue to be, combat experience is not a requirement to be a Tomb Guard. The weapons are not props, however they are not carried loaded.
So has the Queen's guard, they come from actual British regiments and have most likely seen action in the middle east. They are also tasked with guarding the royal family and their houses of residence.
Well, the drill movements are a bit difficult to explain, the clapping of the heels are just a formality, basically, drill is enabling a commander or an NCO to move from one place to another and that's exactly what they are doing, moving one guard to another place.
Have you thought about the fact that these soldiers have sacrificed their lives for their country? Though I agree the Buckingham palace guards deserve respect, I hardly see they are equate the two.
You can't be serious about McChrystal. That guy can't even show respect to the Office of the President of the United States, which I take as a slap in the face to all Americans. Personally, I wish Gen. Wesley Clark would have been elected President. A true patriot he is.
@goldbloke They wear them because of the harsh reflection of the marble. Eye damage was an actual possibility in past guards from long exposure. Besides they have had some incident, granted not much. Back in the late 60's and 70's there was a few events where someone tried to deface the grave. But as it is an honor such as this is sought after by thousands but granted to very very few.
The Tomb contains 4 American Soldiers. 1 from each major War. World War One, World War Two, The Korean War, and the final from the Vietnam War. The 4 American Soldiers are Unknown. Nobody knows them.
they move so synchronized it is just beautiful to watch. What dedication.
I'm from the UK and had the honour to see this in person a few years ago. You American's must be so proud!
Amazing group of soldiers. Such Respect.
Its nice to see that people go out and accompany these guys even during a rain storm.
This is the definition of class, precision, and dedication.
These guys are probably the most dedicated people you will ever find in the world.
This is an unbelievable amount of commitment. This is amazing. id love to see this in person.
thats a summer shower if I've ever seen one.
Wonderful service these soldiers provide. God bless and watch over them.
Damn RIGHT they're guarding the tomb in the rain! They're guarding and respecting the souls of those who did and will continue to ensure you're freedom. I thank you men for properly honoring those souls
The most awesome sight I have ever seen. The dedication of duty in any kind of weather I'd
One of the most hallowed and respected jobs in the U.S. military. It's an honor for any soldier to say that he served as a member of the old guard.
If it rained fire I bet they would still stand there. They are too dedicated
Daniel Gaona They still stayed guarding during a hurricane!

It must be such an honor to guard the grave of every unknown soldier.
Some people these days should be sent there to learn a thing or two about respect.
It was introduced for all our American troops that never made it back to the states if their bodies were never found or the dog tags were gone. It stands as a monument to those who never made it back in the pine box. They all have my respects who served and died.

im not an american but i have so much respect for these guys !
We Are Americans .. Many have died so all of us can have this freedom we enjoy .. Honor Them !
They don't notice nor do they care it's storming,God bless them!!
you can see their dedication…the dark prints in the pavement
Are the routines modified during inclement weather in any way to guard against errors caused by wet or icy pavement, slick surfaces on the rifles, etc?
These guys do a far superior job than those in the UK. Ours just stand there these guards actually move in precise movement.
They are still gaurding it. Even during the Hurricane Sandy, which is right now. #respect.

Amen. I would do it for the rest of my life if I were chosen.
Yes, thank you, best answer I've gotten so far.
This man types wisdom.

These Guards will never stop guarding Even in a Hurricane, Tornado, Thunder Storm or ANYTHING these tombs are guarded 24/7 no matter wat
Brilliant just speechless
Very proud men to do what they do it is very interesting to see at first hand
As I said, they most definantly do deserve respect. I'm ashamed of the Americans that would go there and be so disrespectful. However, my point wasn't the guards, but what they are guarding. any American that talks down about this needs to leave the country. Serious shit right here folks.
Tell them Mr. Fullard. People need to learn about honor, respect and sacrifice. This is part of what makes this country great. It is a country of laws, honor, dedication, order and respect. I am a proud Naturalized U.S. Citizen.

The way they tap their shoes looks interesting. It doesn't appear to be a simple tap, though. I can't duplicate it. What is that about?
Finally the soldiers you r watching,VOLUNTEER.Thats right, they volunteer for this privilege. So before you belittle what you see,ask a vet.Ask someone that lost a loved one.A loved one that never returned. That disappeared .It gives comfort to think, your lost one may rest in this Tomb. Its not a creepy Duty.
What is Arlington National Cemetery?(Sorry I only read it once so i'm not sure how to spell it!)
@CaptainRidley - How could they guard anything without live rounds?!
I'm not tryin to hate or anything but I wonder if any of those guys have ever slipped while walking or doing their tap thing. especially in the rain or snow.

@Rangers2011WS its not a waste, the tomb of the unknown soldeir is one of the most important locations in the U.S.
How often do they exchange guards, and also, is there a guard marching around in the middle of the night?
@xxageofconanfanxx the Vietnam unknown was identified as a Air Force Captain
For those who don't know, this tomb is for US soldiers that have died in duty, but never identified. These men are buried and protected 24-7 by the USMC guards as respect for their service to their country.

I do know discipline thanks mate, I only said they sound like robots. Very different to our military. Impressed though how in sync they are
it seems as thought the actual change was cut somewhere.
Doesn't matter if it's a storm, snow, hurricane, windy, etc. they always do their job, especially hurricanes, they go "that's okay, we do what we do"
How is it boring.
Where Is This At?
Not to mention the loaded Colt 45. in his waist. Plus he knows how to crack a skull open with the rifle he has (although its not loaded)
what happens if someone walks on to the tomb will he get shot?
just a young man asking a simple question please no sarcastic answers its ala
wys been a wonder of mine
dude thank you im not a future marine im a future officer in the army/special forces
how many tombs they are guarding?
Can somone explain to me what The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is (Arlington Cemetary)?
Their boots are specially made with steel plates fitted in certain areas, thus the 'tap' is clearly heard.
They have the right to stand down if it is a bad storm also. It was completely up to the guards in Hurricane Sandy to remain guarding the tomb.
is there a guard there 24/7 or is that for show and why do they guard it? no disrespect just wondering
he sounds like one of those talking army toys in those movies
3 in total. WW1, WW2, Korean. 4th was the Vietnam unknown but he was identified and exhumed.
These guys stay here 24 hours a day 365 days a years no matter what happens. They stood guard even when they could see the smoke and flames coming from the pentagon on 9/11.

So it is a monument for all soldiers who were never found?
What are they doing?
They will never stop. The day they do hell will freeze over.
What happened at 1:12?? What did I miss?
Why do they kick their legs out to the side?
what's in the tomb?
The guard was posted after the commanding officer of the cMD discovered that tourists were using the tomb as a picnic table. Hence 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
yes .. you opened my eyes killer...
What are they guarding exactly? Ghosts?
No. First, the rifles carried are not loaded. Consequences vary. Usually a disorderly will be "asked" to leave.
Very cool
@lukesfist its just my apinion like in your u see army im shore as the best and i respect that its just my hole famly has been in the marine exept my dad who was in the 173 air born bergade in operation desert storm i respect u for wat u have dun for this country thank u
Who is this unknown soldier??? I'm so curious!!
@EnglishBayley believe it or not- thats actually rust- from the metal plates on the soles and the inside of the heel, called "cheaters".
Its a Ceremonial thing. It just looks better when they do facing movements.
the teleporting soldier!
Although many Sentinels have been deployed and continue to be, combat experience is not a requirement to be a Tomb Guard. The weapons are not props, however they are not carried loaded.

Have you thought about the fact that these soldiers have sacrificed their lives for their country? Though I agree the Buckingham palace guards deserve respect, I hardly see they are equate the two.
@HoCkEYpLayErTuFo The best part of this is "future Marine". I think every 13 year old boy I've ever met is a "future Marine."
Why do they guard it so carefully?
You can't be serious about McChrystal. That guy can't even show respect to the Office of the President of the United States, which I take as a slap in the face to all Americans. Personally, I wish Gen. Wesley Clark would have been elected President. A true patriot he is.
He'll be asked to step back, and if he does not reply he'll be apprehended, but not shot.
I wouldn't even give him 1minute these men are trained beyond belief they would look at you guarantee I bet you'd piss your self
@goldbloke They wear them because of the harsh reflection of the marble. Eye damage was an actual possibility in past guards from long exposure. Besides they have had some incident, granted not much. Back in the late 60's and 70's there was a few events where someone tried to deface the grave. But as it is an honor such as this is sought after by thousands but granted to very very few.
why the hell did you cut up the video? it's all mixed and out of order
The Tomb contains 4 American Soldiers. 1 from each major War. World War One, World War Two, The Korean War, and the final from the Vietnam War. The 4 American Soldiers are Unknown. Nobody knows them.
