Following the career of Rashidi Yekini was truly an adventure. Starting in the Nigerian leagues, he showcased exceptional talent and quickly became a fan favorite. His journey didn't stop there; his move to Ivory Coast only amplified his skill, and then Europe saw him shine in clubs across its landscape. The current era of social media offers unprecedented access to the history of football, allowing fans to explore the careers of players past and present. With this shift in the digital landscape comes a change in economic dynamics. Today, it's nearly every African player's dream to play in Europe due to the lucrative opportunities available. However, back in the day, legends like Roger Milla and Théophile Abega from Cameroon didn’t see European football as a necessity. They established iconic careers without it. I miss the days of watching local clubs like Shooting Stars, Leventis United, NNB ( Stephen Keshi) , Rangers, and Abiola Babes. The stadiums were always packed, brimming with anticipation and excitement. Who needed to look to European leagues when our local matches were so electrifying? Even players such as Fashanu and John Chidozie, despite their international experience, found it tough to replace the Green Eagles team of that era. Today, our local league matches struggle to reach even 30% stadium capacity. Many of Rashidi Yekini’s awe-inspiring goals remain undocumented online. In contrast, today's footballers have every moment meticulously captured and shared, making it easy to forget past achievements. Yekini was the definition of raw talent. Watching him play was witnessing magic. Victor Osimhen appears to follow in Yekini’s footsteps, with immense potential and a plethora of facilities at his disposal. Should he maintain his focus and stay injury-free, he has every opportunity to become an even greater legend. Yet, Rashidi Yekini's records remain imposing challenges for any aspiring footballer. Rashidi Yekini's legacy endures as a testament to his unparalleled skill and passion. His memory continues to inspire, and I hold in high regard his contributions to football. May his soul rest in peace, forever remembered as one of the greats.
@adeagbow Thank you. Well written. I am osimhen number one fan.i love Victor Osimhen die. But let's give respect where it's due, man. For now oo, Baba YEKINI (RIP) remains the GOAT as per number 9 for the super eagles of Nigeria. Osimhen can surpass Yekini , he has the potential. But for now, he has more work to do. Only people that didn't see or watch Yekini play will always compare both.
Oshimen dey try but Yekeni remains the best for now but oshimen is young and can still do more but Yekini is his idol to achieve anything he wishes to achieve
Yekini embodied what a striker should be; but one thing that really stood out was his accurate shots. Yekini could aim at a flying bird and be on target. That's why he could score goals with ease. Osimhen is on his way.
Yekini is the first and remains the only African to play in 4 AFCON Grand Finals Matches(1984 final in Ivory Coast, 1988 final in Morocco, 1990 final in Algeria and 1994 final in Tunisia). Yekini is the first and remains the only man who dominated goal scoring at 3 consecutive AFCONs. Yekini is the first Nigerian to win the African Footballer of the year award !! Yekini Won the 1994 AFCON title and was the Highest Goal scorer and the Best player(MVP) of the 1994 AFCON title!! Yekini played in the 1984 Champions League Final with IICC Shooting Stars Football Club of Nigeria. Yekini was the top goal scorer in the Portuguese League in Two separate seasons. Yekini goals almost single handedly lead Nigeria to its 1st World Cup in 1994. Yekini won the Nigerian League and Ivorian League titles as the Top Goals scorer. Yekini won 4 Ivorian league titles with Africa Sport FC (when ASEC was the dominant football club in Ivory Coast) and 2 Ivorian Cup titles. Yekini won 2 Nigerian FA Cups. Yekini Won the African Cup Winners Cup with Africa Sports of Ivory Coast when the competition was very difficult to win. Osimhen is good, however statistically and as a pure goal scorer Yekini is still Superior to Osimhen
THANK YOU! I LOVE OSIMHEN DIE, BUT RASHIDI FOR NOW REMAINS THE BETTER PERSON. THE GOALS OSIMHEN MISSES, YEKINI WILL NEVER MISS IT. THE AMOUNT OF OFFSIDE TRAP OSIMHEN GETS IN, YEKINI NEVER GOT THAT. EVERY OTHER YARDSTICK U MENTIONED IS ON POINT.
During Yekini's era, Nigeria had a good coach who assembled excellent players in all position on the field that supported Yekini to succeed well. Nigeria does not have that class of coach and players now. These Super Eagles players are not the best Nigeria can select across the world. Nigeria needs a coach who can assemble a winning team who will support good players to shine. If Yekini played with these set of Super Eagles players, I bet you that he would not have scored those number of goal. Osimhen is good and highly talented and his skills shine in clubs because he has excellent players who support and feed him with good passes there. It is difficult to easy compare the 2 players but because of different variables in their era but given excellent supporting players we can compare them on the total number of goals score since they became professionals both in the national and club teams Having said that, to be a legendary player, the player must support his/her team to qualify for the World Cup and progress further in the tournament than the other player did. Based on this criterion, Yekini will arguably have some upper hand in this area as of today.
The best striker that Nigeria has ever produced us Thompson Osiyen. Ever since Thompson Osiyen left that Central attacking position,no one has ever been able to fill that position.
Oshimen’s story is being written, all the best to him. But in that striking role, the legendary status of Yekini cannot be compared to any other Nigerian players. Even the other legends acknowledge Baba Yekini as the best ever Nigerian Striker
Check Rashid goals at club levels in Nigeria, in Europe with Victorial Setubal highest goal Scorer , watch how Rashid destroyed Real Madrid in a champions league match. Oshime is just starting. Let us see Oshime continuing like this. We hope he continues to perform well.
How dare you listed John Obi Mikel above Jay Jay, KANU, even old legends like Odegbami and Muda Lawal. What exactly did Mikel achieve for Nigeria, and what individual mark did he achieve on the global scale outside his team success.
I wish we could add voice notes here. I love Osimhen, I love Yekini. You need to know and understand Nigerian football history before you speak on many things. GOD bless Nigeria.
The guy in hat 🧢 .. hats off! The other guy’s continuous emphasis on yekini’s career in Côte d'Ivoire to denigrate his record .. he however made some valid points.. but Osimehn needs to up his game esp with the SE
2nd speaker with hat makes a lot of sense in his submissions, yekini is best striker nja ever produced. But I think osimen will surpass it,the way it is going. His club career is awesome and in the pick of his career already. I fear he will not make it to this coming world cup., would have been more better.
Tosin, bear in mind that Victor Osimhen is still alive, in-form and still playing, all at just 25 years of age. At 25, he already surpassed Segun Odegbami's goal scoring record. I bet you before Victor Osimhen reaches 30 years of age, at the rate he is going with all consistency, he will surpass the achievements of Yekini, JJ, Kanu etc. The first African to win Serie-A best footballer of the season 2023 - 2024, best young player in Serie A 2022-2023. Remember Serie-A is one of the toughest leagues in the world. Personally Victor Osimhen at his age, consistent in form, he will surpass all. Thank you.
You don't know yekini there are some goals are not recorded, amokashi said he watches yekini scores 9 goals in a match in Nigeria league, can osimen ,even Ronaldo scores 9 goals in one match.
This Tunde guy must be drunk o o! You can't even compare or even compare Osimhen with Victor Ikpeba, let alone Rashidi Yekinni - who should be an all time African greatest striker (if not for international club issue) !
Oga commentator, Rashidi Yekini remain the best and made history, he became the first and ever Nigeria striker to score in the world cup. Oga you are disrespecting Rashidi Yekini

Very well said. Thanks for your insightful comment that is indeed nostalgic for many of us.

God bless you my brother, Yekini all the way
Yekini still No 1
Oshimen dey try but Yekeni remains the best for now but oshimen is young and can still do more but Yekini is his idol to achieve anything he wishes to achieve
Mind u, Rashidi Yekinni rarely misses goal scoring chances, unlike the rest of other African strikers. ❤❤❤
Yekini embodied what a striker should be; but one thing that really stood out was his accurate shots. Yekini could aim at a flying bird and be on target. That's why he could score goals with ease. Osimhen is on his way.
Guy with the hat actually made sense today 😅
You need to go ask African defenders to know how fearful they always were playing against Rashidi Yekinni! ❤❤❤❤❤❤

What a LEGEND!
The man who scored Nigeria's 1st goal @ the World Cup tournament!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Guy with the heart, speak wisely
Sunday Oliseh played for top clubs and won trophies for Ajax, Dortmund and Juventus as well as an AFCON and Olympic Gold.
Dude .. check yekini in Lisbon
The best striker that Nigeria has ever produced us Thompson Osiyen.

It is too early to draw these conclusions
V09 got 6 more years of African football … when he is all said and done then we can judge 🙌🏾 I rests my case

Yekini is the greatest striker to play for super eagles

Thank you.
Victor has a long way to go before he can surpass Yekini. Thank you
@ellissmadu500 I agree, and no one is doubting that. The good thing is he has age on his side, and he is very consistent.
I hate this comparison because l love these two number " 9 " .
For your generation and when you just began to watch football it is could be osimen
You don't know yekini there are some goals are not recorded, amokashi said he watches yekini scores 9 goals in a match in Nigeria league, can osimen ,even Ronaldo scores 9 goals in one match.
Big man suffering from recency bias. He's neither the most successful nor the best. You include Kanu as a striker, then end of discussion.
I think I have watched it before
That episode was about whether Osihmen can break the super eagles all-time goalscorer record.
This Tunde guy must be drunk o o!
You can't even compare or even compare Osimhen with Victor Ikpeba, let alone Rashidi Yekinni - who should be an all time African greatest striker (if not for international club issue) !
Why will you rate Obi ahead of Kanu haba
U dey mind d guy... probably a Chelsea fan
Oga commentator, Rashidi Yekini remain the best and made history, he became the first and ever Nigeria striker to score in the world cup.
Oga you are disrespecting Rashidi Yekini
Waste of time
this guy is talking nonsense
This dude knows nothing about football
