- USC has completed 12 practices so far of fall camp and that means it's time for them to turn the page and go into game preparation week for the next two weeks. Over the next two weeks, the Trojans will develop their starting rotation and depth chart. I explain what's ahead.
Part of building a roster has to do with maintaining depth at a championship level. However, the transfer portal and NIL make it difficult even for programs like Georgia. During the show's second segment, I explain who USC has in the backup department that can help.
The Friday Rant returns in segment 3 after taking a one-week sabbatical. This week I talk about shifting the paradigm away from calling high school recruits kids when they're playing adult games and making adult-type of money.

I think USC has a huge defensive advantage, especially going into LSU, because LSU needs to watch film on UCLA for the scheme and then watch separate film on USC’s players. It’s going to be hard because some of these players may fit better in the scheme and looked bad on film in the previous season.

Great show, Marc…again! Are we heavily recruiting Longstreet? Maybe we should try playing both ends against the middle like the recruits are doing to us. If we can pull offers away, we should tell Longstreet that if he commits, we’ll rescind Lewis’ offer. I think eliminating the ridiculous “Signing Day” would go along way to address 16 year-olds’ ability to squeeze our family jewels.
Also, is NIL an up-front payment…do they get to take their “bag” with them if they pull a “Raikes”? There is SO much that needs to be fixed!!!

Marc, one (at least partial) solution for the issue you mentioned regarding developing players, just to have them leave. Particularly when comes to NIL deals, I think you you have to get players sign a contract that locks them in beyond just one season. It's just crazy or stupid imo to give a player 500 G's+ without a without any guaranteed commitment.

Juju needs to shut it down based on the fact it’ll help with recruiting and possible flips. It would show leadership and commitment. He’s doing the team a disservice by not shutting it down

So when is the Salute to Troy? I used to really enjoy this time of year with the end of fall camp and the scrimmage in the Coli and the BBQ. On my depth charts by the time game prep work starts I have % of expected reps for the top 3 guys at every position - just as a fan since around 1996. Good to hear that we won't be fielding kickoffs / punts at the pylon and stepping out of bounds anymore. That had to be our low point in this era. Or was it CW crying in mommy's arms? idunno. Back to Trojan Football eh?

If you’re 18 you can sign up for the Military and defend our country. Those are not a kids anymore. Why are these same age players being treated like kids?
Point of contention… this is why perhaps the “Michigan” way is best. Go for the best but shoot for high commitment, hardworking, underrated guys who won’t bail the first year they don’t start. 5 stars go to the highest bidder and often don’t stay. Shoot for top 10-15 classes and keep people for 4 years and Develop them.
That's why Brian Kelly has been hitting LA so hard. Mom, pops, lil sister, auntie and memaw can all go to the games. Hard for local talent to leave after one or two years. That plus LA puts out more NFL talent per capita than any other state.

My mind thinks about this scenario too. USC's defense has to prove they can make LSU more 1-dimensional.
Why would coaches want to give away that info to reporters? They want to keep their players competing and their opponents guessing. They will do that internally, let the rest of us go crazy speculating. ;)
There's always engaging info you can give them while not giving away anything that could hurt you. Robinson used to do very well about that. It is just coy and stupid to not give them anything. Pete Carroll used to give us plenty.

USC is in for a tough year. If they can keep their staff together and recruit better, maybe 2025 will be competitive.
What kind of win loss record do you see Trojans attaining this year? Depth is foremost among deficiencies, yes, recruiting will of course be paramount going forward, consistent and stellar, year after year.✌️
