  • I have always taken an intrest in chemical extractions of compounds containing ketones and aldehydes. In today's video though we are extracting piperine, and really this process is just for fun and I am going to be sending the piperine to a perfumer! I can't wait to see what she does with it!

    QC Chemist here, I test piperine potency regularly for my work in both comestics and dietary supplements. Thanks for showing a small scale piperine extraction, enjoyed^_^

      That's a really neat profession! If you don't mind me asking, could you give me a brief explaination of how potency testing of piperine is performed?

    The soxlet extractor is a cool set of glassware

      It's one of the coolest single pieces of glassware I think there is. Just the way it works and the way it's designed always amazes me

      Dude, it's a fricken genius piece of glassware. I actually just discovered the _jacketed_ soxhlet extractor, which I just might buy off ebay. Instead of having a vapour tube, the vapours go all up the jacket, which heats up the entire body of the soxhlet extractor (not just the bottom), and the siphon tube is on the inside of the jacket, so it's much easier to handle (those siphon tubes are so easy to break).

    Thanku for video.ive set this as my first real chemistry experiment.its pretty straight forward and gets you experience in several facets of basic processes.have not followed entire process out yet but im hopeful.i do kinda question the color but great job!thanks for sharing.

    Nice job man! I remember getting crystals to form was a pain in the ass. I eventually just dissolved the product in some solvent (forgot if it was ethanol, IPA or acetone), and put it in a sealed flask and forgot about it. A few months later when I was cleaning, I found it and it had the nicest crystals in it.

      I am definitely going to try this! I figure it’s worth a shot if my next ones don’t crystallize either heh

      @@PrestonImpx yep. Turns out adding an excess of solvent and forgetting about it for a while is a great trick. It's worked a few times, lol. Always great cryatals.

      @@PrestonImpx oh, side note - I just purchased 200g of dicyclopentadiene. I plan on making some ferrocene and nickelocene with it. Gonna be badass

      Wouldn't the solvent not evaporate off from a sealed flask?

    • @jhyland87
      @jhyland87 2 роки тому +2

      @@mrmawf1564 Yes and no. A vial isn't as well sealed as something like an ampoule. I can't tell you how many containers leaked my solvents (benzene, CS2, chlorinated solvents, etc). All I know is it was a vial with piperine in some IPA, and a few months later there were crystals.
      Crystals form best when they have a long period to do so. So its not impossible that they just formed slowly (even if the solvent didn't leak). If there was enough in solution and the room heated up and cooled down enough, that's more than enough to get crystals to form.
      Long response, sorry.

    If this is going to be remade, I like seeing the evolution of the process diagrammed out...
    Might suggest "MOLD and Microbiology" as everyone has a video on pen-g/pen-vk but no "video" on it being done.
    Otherwise decent vid! Thumbs up!!!

    Looks like you are in a similar situation to me and could use a rotovap! It’s pretty annoying having to setup and look after a dist. just to reduce total RXN quantity

    It is better use time anstead grinding!
    Use old vodka bottles and fill with ungrinded pepper and EtOH and let chill for long time, and then easy decant the green clear solution. Repeat with new EtOH.

    Hi, i love your explanations and methods, you are a clever clever man, i mix cannabinoids to help with the human endocannabiniod system, ive managed to make water soluble cbd isolate and cbd distillate water soluble but i cant seem to crack cbn, any help would be legandary as i help so many people, hope to hear from you. Cheers

      What seems to be the issue when you are trying to make the CBN isolate?
      I’ve made pretty pure CBN distillate just through a short path distillation.
      Though what is actually giving you issues? I could definitely try to help

    NileRed extracted white piperine crystals, why are yours yellow ? Do you not clean your labware ? I'm disliking this video🙅

    • @PrestonImpx
      @PrestonImpx  Рік тому +1

      Yellow is due to not washing it with ethanol within the last steps enough times. I didn’t extract enough due to losing product during purification.
      If you are going to insult a video, at least know what you are talking about. There are a lot of people on this channel that have decent lab experience.

      I’m sorry that came off wrong and I definitely shouldn’t attacked you without knowing you. I’ve have too many people compare me to NileRed and even though he was definitely inspiration for me to start my own thing, I will never have the resources he does, so comparing me to him feels like a losing battle. I got defensive and I’m sorry
