For those with truly very curly hair I would not recommend teasing.. If you brush your dry curly hair it will become very frizzy and will have enough texture to create the style, the reason I would not recommend the teasing is that it will be very difficult to untangle, more so than regular straight hair or even want hair, in addition I would use a stronger spray like a freezing spray and I would use much less hairspray

Just a note guys, the hairspray is sprayed at a much further distance which only lightly mists the hair, the further away you spray the product, the lighter it mists the hair.
Next time have her make lots of little braids with her hair wet. Wait a few days (sorry ladies, but thick, curly hair does not need to be washed daily, sometimes even weekly) and when it is totally dry (completely dry is important) brush it out with a vent brush (yes, it must be a vent brush) - it will look like a mop, but the hair will not be damaged. This will create the same fullness for a beehive, without the damage created by backcombing "teasing".
Worth trying. I have frizzy hair. However back combing on rare occasions shouldn't harm the hair .

OMG! Never backcomb curly hair! Especially full bodied hair like the victi . . . I mean girl in the chair. She will have split ends forever! You destroy the cuticle and her curls will look like frizzy crap until she can grow them out - if ever! Thick, curly hair is simple to for creating a beehive, no backcombing needed! Poor girl.
My hair hurts when I see any one back comb their hair. Looks like it would tear the hair when one tries to take tease out.
Get a "Wet Brush".

Purchase a "Wet Brush". Not the one w/ the little balls on the end of the pins. Amazing brush and it's approx. $12 usd

Lots of spray.. but the final look is good.
In the 60s my bouffant was as hard as a board. The only way to stay put in windy cold weather.
