Despite being a sacred animal, some people still view them as objects which can result in cases of animal abuse.
The elephants captured from the wild often endure cruelty and mistreatment at the hands of their owners and handlers.
Kerala has an estimated 518 elephants ― one of the highest numbers of captive elephants in any state in India. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Assam and Rajasthan follow suit, where elephants are mostly used in temples and for tourist rides.
Animal rights activist and secretary of Thrissur-based Heritage Animal Task Force V K Venkitachalam says all the deaths were due to torture and lack of food and care. “Tethered to standing position for hours and deprived of proper rest and exercise, elephants suffer from arthritis, indigestion and wound infection. They also get injured when they eat non-fibrous palm fronds with sharp edges,” he says.
The physical and emotional torture elephants face from mahouts is unspeakable.
In the attempt to domesticate them, elephants are shackled and beaten.
The wounds from shackles, spike chains and injuries from hitting them using iron rods on sensitive areas like ears, eyes and cuticles give them huge pain, stress and trauma.

@@Sreeprayag Slaughtering is for eating, Not for entertainment. Only animals that come under livestock is slaughtered during bakrid. No animals should be tortured unless for consumption and only animals that comes under livestock can be butchered. No wild animals can be butchered for consumption. Here elephants are tortured and kept in chains for the purpose of pure entertainment. Know the difference dude.
