It metaphorically depicts the greatest tragedy of the Second World War, the atomic bomb. The hanged object represents the bomb from the sky. The stone represents the destroyed city and everything falling to the ground. the paint represents the carnage, and the circle represents the area affected by the bomb.

Seeing him here for the first time, and without knowing much at all about his works and life and approach to art, I might suggest to those who comment with ridicule to hold your speedy judgements and first understand a bit about the long history and practice of Chinese-Japanese ink brush calligraphy and painting, and the traditional significance the tools of stone, ink, brush, paper in the human history of writing and painting !
Even without context of knowing this specific artist's body of work, in this show and performance one can note all kinds of layers of ideas and interpretations, including the uniquely always inherent degree of randomness in Oriental ink work, a present-moment- zen spontaneity, the often happy guided accidents as well as unsatisfactory glitches, the often arduous preparations yet brevity of execution, the live presentation of a couple of thousand years continuing practice in a modern setting, ...
There are historic stories of the brush artist having blackened the pond behind his studio from all the ink he ground throughout his life, special quality ink stones from particular regions and rivers, Chi expressing through the flowing ink through the brush and onto the paper,...
No matter even the actual intent by the artist, no need to dismiss without inquiry!

The act and the result are stupid. The ideas behind it are tired "mysterious oriental zen chi tao etc." Seems like the clever part is putting on a show to sell some lame ink on paper stuff. The public is mostly bored journalists doing their job, and some entusiasts of tai chi and feng shui and jet li ready to part with their money. Good times.

Your comment is far more interesting than the performance itself .. The staging and repetition - as in performance- of such an art loses all its substance which is found in spontaneous experiential momentum not programmed performance act. watching this felt a waste of time although I respect the artist

@@PeterQuentercrimsonbamboo thank you. I thought so by the smile he has once he's done .. I didn't feel he was truly living the process more than he's happy that the show is finished, which is understandable as a true artist he is. Besides, your kind of perfect explanation above should be mandatory to such a context as for people not familiar with this art tend to just see some crazy guy bent on his knees remotely scratching a rock for..12minutes, one can't blame them either. It's full of symbols and meaning that's not instantaneously understandable, besides losing unfortunately all the essence

Why are people so angry about something they do not understand? Why did you come to this video? It is not an easy video to find for those not interested...so why come on here and expose yourself as philistines? Why do you care what people deem art and what people spend their money on? How does it impact you in any way, you obviously do not go to museums or read books or choose to expand your culture in anyway, so why the negativity? Just go about your dull, ignorant day, shop at Walmart and leave the culture to those who want to be more open minded and inclusive.
If a billionaire wants to call this art and spend 1 million on it, that is his prerogative, not yours. It is in no way preventing you from doing whatever you want to do. Do you get it?
Next time don't try so hard and actively go out of your way to find these videos and you won't get so upset.

    1) would it still be art, In other words, is it perceived as art because it is established that this is an recognized artist performing,?.
    2) would a random nonartist perform the same scene on a sidewalk be received the same by "Joe Public"?

Some things look easy but they turn out to be a lot more difficult than you expect. Also, some arts - of improv comedy, for example, are more about spontaneous creativity under pressure.
It's easy to copy the artist after you've seen them create the movements and symbols involved, but can you improvise something of similar quality yourself on demand?

There's a kind of art named Naif, made more by people (even animals) that not necessary means something, sometimes is just the result of boring without any other intentions far away of just do the thing. Sadly, this is not always recognized as pure art and just and "excuse" por people to desmerite amateur artist or the beauty in small things. The art made by children is one of the common Naif pieces, just drawings and creations with the beauty of being, the world across the eyes of the kid.

Beautiful performance artist, I started recently seeing the process of making art is the art itself and by restricting the use of traditional tools like brushes and substituting them for rocks and leaves and eye droppers and syringes, to make creation almost at a naturally instinctive level its the basis of art and creativity itself. We naturally as humans want to create and connect and by resisting the urge to use the tools provided and make our own work on our own terms, then it and you become art itself and you start connecting with your audience on a instinctive level. In a level that says we all can create. the work itself and the tools behind it all becomes the artistic statement, and he understands this very very well as well as providing the artistic statement of the dropping of the nukes in WWII

Without any need for justification a seemingly arbitrary act in a world of movement, decay and death, exists... So, invisible chance seeps in dark drips splashing rainy stains onto bleached paper which isn't histories bloody narrative. The process of Art is a lone protean motion beyond mere rhetoric, till this pulse stops. Arigatou! _ (A Londoner).

Culture is all human expression, but the artistic is all that can reach our inner being to make us feel liked. If someone is going to feel like suffering, killing, seeing or eating shit, he will have the right to feel it, but he will be a victim of the consequences of his own guts. Common sense is very important and it is so important that you are trying to destroy it in order to create suffering, traumas, pain and many ailments. Whoever believes that this aberration of art is a source of inspiration will have to look at what their inner life is like. It does not take a scholar to be able to distinguish what is good or bad for us. Believing that that kind of expression is nice, could have something psychotic hidden. The good thing about all this is that when you see such a group of people applauding this stupid minimalism, you realize that you are healthy and free from cultural mediocrities. Art demands an effort that has to provoke pleasure, but it must be realized that for some time there has been a shit art and it has the right to exist. As prisons, psychiatric hospitals, and one can say: "luck that my common sense has not led me to those places." People have the right to be sick or to suffer and that must be respected, but the apology for folly is like a virus that if we neglected it could take force in our senses.

It metaphorically depicts the greatest tragedy of the Second World War, the atomic bomb. The hanged object represents the bomb from the sky. The stone represents the destroyed city and everything falling to the ground. the paint represents the carnage, and the circle represents the area affected by the bomb.

Concordo plenamente amigo...veja meu comentário e repito:
