In "Growing Wild Together" we return to the nearly 30-year-old permaculture food forest growing on the edge of a small town in the very south of Aotearoa New Zealand. The forest, previously an abandoned section filled with rubbish and burnt house remains, was the subject of our 2016 film An Invitation for Wildness. Now we’ve returned to find out what has changed in the forest and for the people who live there.
Robyn and Robert’s forest garden is home to countless forms of life, from trees and plants to birds, fish, and insects, and of course the humans who live amongst it all, in harmony. With time it grows wilder and wilder, “Like me,” says Robert. Since we first visited, the couple have also developed new projects, one of them reviving an old trade route, to help create food resilience for the nearby rural communities.
In the film, Robert says he’s convinced that the food forest model will be one of the most important models for creating a resilient future on Earth. He maintains we must learn to be loved by the forest. Here is a film to inspire love for our forests and everything they generously gift us!

love your videos so much, I'm on the Goldy and am slowly growing more food at my rental property. My neighbours in the complex are always complimenting my garden. i would watch even longer videos I would still love to see more and it helps with view time. I take it in turns who I subscribe to on patreon so I think it will be you guys for the next few months, I don't have much money but I want to show my appreciation for the fantastic videos.

My grandparents were the Guyton's neighbors. I was in an organic growers group with the Guytons.The land you see now was nothing but gorse and broom, which I cleared manually as a school boy for the Guytons when they began their forest. It sure is good to see their amazing results as I swelter in the concrete jungle of Taipei.

@@simonli9215 From my very limited understanding I believe the Taiwanese government would declare something like the Guyton's food forest non compliant in terms of agriculture (land use permitted activities) due to the tree cover.
So happy to see an update on this place. That video years ago inspired me as a teenager and now I've began studying horticulture. I am wanting to progress to botany at a university level within Australia with a focus on conservation. Learning about our native species and create a food forest with plants endemic to the area, with some possibly from other parts of Australia. Having a property like this is my dream and I would love to inspire others to create their own along the way.
To the owners of the food forrest and those whom filmed it - thank you. You have given me hope for a better future that is worth fighting for rather than seeing all of the misery this consumeristic society has caused. I wish all of you the best 🖤

Great to see this update! The first film inspired me to start a food forest here in Germany on 500 m altitude and now after five years it is almost bursting into a wonderful green Inferno. And I will do everything to protect it against my neighbours complainig about the 'missing tidyness' and attacking the edges of the forest garden now and then. I was fifteen when I discovered, this and the whole concept of permaculture. And now I'm studying biology so I can become a wildlife conservationist and have my own garden based on the same concept. I appreciate all of this and thank you for shaping my future and life.

Last year I got an extreme IBS flare because of work related stress. My mum and I started a herb garden. It helped so much. After work I would rub my hands in the herbs to calm down after a hard day. Now we also have a few fruit tree seedlings 😍

Wow. Their permaculture food forest is even more lush now than it was back in 2016! Glad to see they're still thriving and living my dream. Oftentimes I think we as a society are givien the false impression that in order to be in sync with our natural ecosystems we will have to sacrafice our prosperity and quality of life, but what this New Zealand couple has shown us is that living in harmony with nature doesn't mean a life of artificial scarcity and decay. Instead, they've shown that it can mean living in abundance with good health in a way that is both sustainable and economically beneficial if done right. Love it!
Imagine if all farms and gardens were like this no one in the world would be hungry again
We would be more hungry due to lower productivity per acre. I hope our garden looks like this one day.
This is beautiful for homesteading. For the world...we would have a very pour diet. The system takes decades to be produtive like this, making it uncomercial from start. Overall produtivity seems good, and quality excelent, but produtivity is very low. If they tried to market it would be a nightmare. If they try to go big the system would have to change dramaticly, to go more simple and much less diverse. They would need machinery, acess, easy pick, etc. Like this thee price s would be trough the roof. And...no grains, no bread, pasta, rice, etc., the main foods that feed the world.
Homesteading is completly different from comercial growing.
Im also a permaculture homesteader.
Considering the impending global food crisis, I think more and more people will start living this way. Our current food system is so fragile and terrible for the planet
@@gunnerbakke5020 On what do you base this? Most peeps dont grow nothing now. And most land is owned by wealthy peeps( Most of this land is just not being managed). And allot of foods are stored in warehouses until prices are better. Having your own food forest with some animals will set u up golden. Allot of peeps already living like this and they are thriving my bro.
@@caspar1982 unlikely... for every "urban new rural" (like me) that goes to the countryside to build a permaculture/regenerative/sustainable homestead farm (whatever this means...), 100 old farmers/ homesteaders that were way more sustainable (they consumed much less in quantity and diversitity) and productive die or go to cities.
This new rural thing seems major on the net, but its actualy minimal.
Permaculture farms, for ex, dont feed even 0,001% of world population. Most permaculture farms dont even feed 50% of the needs of the people living there.
And the trend (more urban, less conection to the land and the natural elements) is growing, fast. And grows even more in crisis times.
This (internet) trend of new rurals is just creating nice places for a minimal of midle class privileged people like me, people that have the oportunity and make the sacrifices needed for that, wich are like small zoo s to some people display on internet (some of the people making money with filming dont even have a garden, they live in cities too) so 99,99 of urban people watching dream on a wonderful world. Like new tv niche soap operas.

Oh wow!!! As the camera pans out and shows the property, I can't help but imagine how amazing our planet would be if every property was like this. I'm working to convert our acre property into a permaculture food forest, not quite there yet, but these sorts of videos inspire me to do more and lead a more simple life. 💙

@@abundantharmony Actually I believe the original garden was in a higher quantum state. We still live in a world fallen from that. Everything is now exists at a lowered quantum state. I don't think we will ever be able to fully recover that without the full return of the Messiah. We, the whole creation, needs supernatural help from above, from the Creator, to fully restore the fallen condition, as the New Testament says, "mortality must put on immortality."

2:14 that clip showing the growth over the last 4 years... it's remarkable how even such a well established food forest can grow SO MUCH in just 4 years. Their house is being swallowed by nature (in such a good way!). And not only up near the house (which is the easiest place to see), I kept rewinding that clip, and look at the entire understory, especially in the bottom left. The understory has pushed all the way up and is now the overstory. You can see what was an emergent forest is now a full blown forest. What a paradise.
When planting a simple tree can give such a tremendous joy ....... what are we cribbing about. Such a joyful people they r.
I wish everyone thought the way you two do. I really hope the garden continues and will be treasured by generations to come.

One of my dream lifestyles and I want to live like this in one day. Grow old together with my plants and die peacefully. Even after my death, my plants can still provide foods and shade to next generations as well as green our environment and planet earth. Thanks for this beautiful video, guys!

I am so inspired by this couple. I love the update.
Imagine having a little food forest in your back yard, so nice
I've planted 7 fruit trees here in the last few years, also 9 birch in 3 clusters of 3. We also changed some of the trees down one side, from a giant pine hedge to a mixed deciduous hedge. I've also let wild trees and bushes grow through, such as holly and wild plumb. The berry bushes are also getting quite huge now and there are some smaller bushes we planted.. 5 veggie patches also fit in, i don't have enough time and energy to fully manage the veggie patches but they bring a decent amount of food even with minimal management. Weeding is the hardest task when it comes to vegetables here! As far as local community growing and social behavior goes, it's not incredible but quite a few people try to grow their own food, at least to supplement their shopping list a bit.
12:10 to 12:45 LOL this guy... I see so much of myself in him. I'm going to be him in another 20 years. Heck I'm him now. He just is everything I want to be as I gracefully age. I hope I meet him one day, here or in the afterlife, and we can swap stories about how we were both doing this on the other side of the world together. I just love that guy. I hope he reads these comments, and knows that he has other people like him out there (SO MUCH like him), doing his work along side him.

It's not true rhubarb, its a species of gunnera which are often referred to as giant or chilean rhubarb as the stems can be prepared and cooked in a similar way :)

As always such a joy to re-visit the Guytons food forest, courtesy this film. I was also one of those visitors to their farm from the Indian Himalayas some 6 years ago and am so glad to see the growth and the transformation. My best to them and well done to the film makers for following up.

I would love to get started on a permaculture forest asap. I’m 37 years old, had a tremendously adverse upbringing. Learning of this within my soul and purpose at may age now, makes me eager to begin asap. I can’t wait for the universe to provide the land resource so I may begin and continue healing the planet and my own mental mind.

His comment at 6:50 about the forest garden model being able to bring back the proper balance in the world, to me, seems to be the thesis of Happen Films. Government 'projects' and plans are not going to restore the balance that is so needed. It is truly a grass-roots movement by people who care about the earth that will make it happen. Great update!

I saw the first video a few years ago. Originally I had read a book called, "The ringing cedars of russia" about 10 plus years ago and ever since then I've wanted to grow my own food forest. Well this last december 12/21 I bought a few acres and I now have maybe 30 fruit trees in the ground. I went to the nursery early this morning and picked up seven more. Its hot right now in southern California, so I'll leave in maybe another 30min to plant them. They sitting in my truck. Everything is still little because i just started but eventually I hope it looks like property in the video. And just like this property it was completely trashed. Abandoned cars, hundreds of tires, trash, debris. People have been using it as a dump site for years. I'm still cleaning it up. Wish me LUCK!!!
