my biggest mistake was being one years old during this merle fest
I have to admire the young Sean Watkins playing next to two masters.
THATS Sean Watkins!? So freaking cool. I grew up around Tony and of course we all knew he and Doc were legends... but Sean is a damn fine musician as well. Saw Nickel Creek in Tallahassee as was blown away with his command.
It's a shame he's not credited in the title because he was just as integral to this performance as Doc and Tony were
I imagine Sean is thinking "don't screw this up". He's an awesome guitar player.
Doc and tony picking together again in that great jam session up in the sky
Finally to play with Merle again, and to be able to see his sons face for the first time. What a glorious day that must’ve been ❤️
Two historic greats. All missed dearly now and forever.
There are few people who have influenced and impacted music as we know it, but of those few people Tony Rice and Doc Watson are shining examples.
The funniest part of this video is Doc's guitar has dots on the neck and Tony's doesn't.
RIP, Tony. About the guitars in this clip, Doc's may be the same Gallagher he played and talked about on the Circle album cut in '70 or '71. Gallagher was a maker in Wartrace, TN, and his dreadnoughts were commercially available. Tony's is a Martin copy of his iconic 1935 Martin D-28 complete with bound neck, pickguard, and larger than regular sound hole. See his liner notes about this guitar in the CD "Tony Rice The Bluegrass Guitar Collection." He thought so much of this guitar that its serial number, 58597, is incorporated into the title art on the cover. There is a picture of the guitar slung over his shoulder inside showing that it had no dots. The copy may still be available from Martin as one of its signature guitars.
Further to my reply, see article from Fretboard Journal that explains the eccentricities of the instrument-no dots, bound neck, enlarged sound hole and more:ua-cam.com/users/redirect?stzid=Ugw2FSNXjN1paqM0xD14AaABAg&event=comments&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbE5ySXBnRmZLTjlTTXUxNXRvZ2dveWlHMTFWQXxBQ3Jtc0ttclA4NW9BYkkwclVqc1JHdmJHR0ZxUnhJZ21lZFpOMDBoTFUtdVFBekhKeUhkV214VU13V2NkZ2hnSDVIeXdOd3FLaHNoQlotYmlCTXBSWDNTXzR1NGJZQS1vckpxdk52ZFFEMFU1dXlzaUpXejhlYw%3D%3D&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fretboardjournal.com%2Ffeatures%2F58957-tony-rice-and-his-holy-grail-martin-d-28%2F
@@garylander1755 the guitar Tony is playing is his Santa Cruz signature model.
Wow. Two bluegrass legends together on stage , there's so much talent !
I love what Doc said " that wasn't long enough" lol
So sad. Another one gone. Soar with the angels, Tony - thank you for the beauty you shared with us.
That look Tony gives Doc at the end says everything
RIP Tony Rice - best ever.
His fingers... quick stop gap to hit the notes...always on beat...legend.
Aww, my first MerleFest! What a trio. Whoever has access to edit the title of it (James Kerr?), please add Sean Watkins to it -- he deserves it! RIP TR.
Tony Rice what an amazing takent he was...we have lost a MASTER in the field of music...1951 - 2020
I listened to this in headphones with my eyes closed. When I heard something that perked my ears I looked to see who was playing. It was the other guy.
It doesnt get any better than this. Masters sounding great. I'm thankful l got to see Doc and Merle twice (the first time of which a young Marty Stewart in the group). RIP Doc, Tony, and Merle. You're the best.
The amount of influence these two legends had on bluegrass is immeasurable!
Ok time to relearn Salt Creek. RIP Doc and Tony. True masters of their craft.
Doc and Tony are jamming together again... I got to see them play together at Merlefest in the 90's... totally epic.
Love this! It never gets old!, I got this original merlefest 2003 DVD when it came out.. wish I could have been there in person,, rest in peace , Tony and Doc. 🙏🙏🎸🎸🐦
Wish he was still around so I'd be able to see him ❤
Truer words were never spoken Doc
I don't know what's more amazing, the talent that's on that stage, or the fact that there is not one Martin guitar being played.
I needed this video badly! Amazing
now thats what I call real COUNTRY MUSIC!!!
Hey Chris: this is great, as you say, but this is not country music, this is Blue Grass. A slight difference . Mainly that the Blue Grass musicians are REAL musicians.
@@bobareeniobobareenio2935 thanks Im gonna call my friend Vince Gill and tell him he is not a REAL Musician;))
Great musicians, great to see and hear. Love it!!!
Doc Watson and Tony rice together!
Almost too much.
Thats the best thing i've seen all week!
I count myself greatly blessed to have heard both Doc and Tony several times. As great as they are in recordings they were even better live.
idolized these clips as a kid crazy to see them all on youtube! i feel like i was deep see diving thru dvds to find this shit
I feel that, except when I started the dive was through VHS. Still have a few.
God bless em both. The joy that they brought to us was unmeasurable.
Sean has earned his place among these two greats.
The 2 Best EVER guitar pickers!!!
I’ve been re watching these videos since I was 16, 23 now
Even if Doc retained his sight, he would be one of the absolute best... but what he managed to do being blind elevates him to guitar god status...
Good old Sean Watkins. Rip Tony and Doc we miss ya
Whom ever recorded this, thank you. That was beautiful and satisfying.
The music lives. The music goes on. Listen now. Isn't that just like cool water?
Another one signed to that magnificent band in Heaven
God is listening to some great blue grass RIP Doc and Tony
They're jamming together once again, with God, Jesus and St Peter tapping their feet.
Master Class
A gem.
Wow. Just, wow.
Shawn Watkins held his own in this song, no question, but I wonder what he was thinking at the 2:00 minute mark when he was carrying the full rhythm while these two giants played the melody at the same time! Great performance by all three!
Ciao Tony buon viaggio.....from Italy
Doc is the best picker ever
I love how poised Tony rice is like paco de Lucia.
All time Giants...unique...respeckt
The Father and the son. All we're missing is the Holy Ghost Clarence White. Pure genius.
Wow, I was there. On a day off from string cheese tour... rip tony
RIP~
God bless both of them they probabally up there pickin now.
Happy New Year
my grandad said he will meet you at the gate.. rip
My God!!!
Advanced experts or excellent would be a severe understatement
❤❤❤❤❤
Tony and Doc were fucking legends man !!!!
💜💜💜
They played the music as it was lived, the song represents a moment in life. So vivid so raw. So many times it has been performed recognized and recorded. This was from a blind Virtuoso who had perfect and deeply personal relationship to these songs and a musical genius as an an amplifier, yet nothing was lost… it’s as the day it was written!
Classic.
i think my guitar must be broken. (on a serious note, i am grateful for all that Tony Rice gave us and now has left us.)
Wow.
This is what's known as, "THE BUSINESS."
Holy sh***
Every flat picker owes a huge debt of gratitude to these two plus Clarence. They all got something from them.
Does Sean not get any love in the caption?
🥰🥰🙏🙏
At the end you can clearly hear Billy's inspiration for the intro of "Dust in Baggie" 2:04
Sean Watkins is terrific. But who are those other two bums?! :) Great stuff all around.
Sean Watkins in there as well?
I have always thought that Sen Watkins has been underrated, or at least overshadowed. He is a fine guitarist, as hold his own with these two legends shows.
A moment in time that I am certain Sean will cherish and never forget. What a thrill for him!
“That wasn’t long enough.” Lmao
Hello? Sean Watkins happens to be playing, too.
Thanks you for that. I was reading my way through the comments hoping to learn (pardon my ignorance) who this third fine guitar player is. Didn't think I should have to ask at the bottom. Yes, all three play their own style. Sean's licks were quite colorful. Now the only player of the three alive. R.I.P. Tony Rice
Sean just needs to keep going for another 30 years and he will be equally revered
Tony Rice the greatest flat picker ever !
how'd you like to have to follow tony & doc .. the young man held his own ..
Back when giants walked the Earth. And picked guitars too.
Everyone: who can follow Tony? Doc: hold my beer
Champagne
As good as it gets
Who needs words
NFL mock draft
Who’s the badass on the left what a rift
lord knows they are pickin' in the sky
I was gonna take my guitar out of the closet this weekend and clean the dust off it , then I ran into this , fuhgeddaboutit
Just play. And then play it again the day after. And the day after that ...
Who’s the 3rd picker
Two best flat top pickers to set foot on stage no offense to Billy molly Bryan they paved the road you can here it in there playing to
one guitar player thinks that if a player that looks away from the guitar neck it makes him play better.....I guess he did not know about Doc watson.
I see that Doc is plugged in here ( which makes sense for a blind person...hate the tone, though) , Now, did Tony ever " plug in"?
Doc rushed from work to the gig so fast, he didn't have time to change his shirt.
Still prefer Doc's straightforward style. How it's done.
PICKERS!!@
Billy Strings carries on pickin fool
Tony cut it short cause he constantly those plugged in guitars. Loved Doc but couldn't stand than pick up sound
Not my jam.
Two great legends of American musical history . If you’re a musician and don’t know one of these legends you really miss something … like me until i discovered Tony Rice , he’s now my musician hero
