This is now my number one go to fly here in Utah. I find that I am tying more and more of these because everyone who borrows one from me wants more and more! Ive probably tied over 100 of this pattern this year alone and my box still only has a couple of em left. Ive pulled picky 26 inch browns with these bad boys. Thanks for the videos. You are the first place I go to learn a new pattern.
I tied a bunch of these in 12,14 and 16 last spring and they quickly became the best fly in my box fishing them for stocked east coast rainbows. Fished as a nymph or swung as a wet. I really appreciate your tying videos. This is truly a great fly!
Nicely done! The little tips you include -- such as using the hanging thread to maintain the position of the peacock herl while wrapping -- are great for novice and experienced tyers alike!! Thanks for the good work!
Wonderful video, incredibly clear. Not too fast, not too slow. Perfect, I think you're one of the best fly tiers on youtube! Not to mention the pattern is awesome too.
I tied some up and fished them this week on several rivers here in central Oregon. My new go to fly. Deadly, Deadly, Deadly. Going to adapt this on a prince nymph. Thanks
What a great looking fly. Just whipped up a half dozen and they're really fun to tie. I know I've got it down when I can finally tie one in real time with the video. :-) The first few I have to pause it a million times, but by the 5th or 6th one I've got it down. Thanks for what you do. :-)
I find the end of one of Keith's cigarettes, used as dubbing material, is irresistible to trout. So much so, that when released, they keep getting caught again. I can't work out why!
Great looking pattern, I think I'd call it the "belts n braces" nymph as it covers all options - (I'm a limey braces are what you call suspenders, suspenders, are what we call the things that hold ladies stockings up -I'm going to have to lie down now I have called up that image). Thanks for your videos, learned loads from your techniques.
Great instructions! I find peacock herl to be very delicate. I would recommend counter-wrapping the ribbing wire forward, and not snipping it breaking. After the herl is wound and secured, continue counter-wrapping the wire over the herl, then tie-in the wire behind the bead.
It doesn't really matter on a dubbed body like this as there is no delicate material beneath the wire that you're trying to protect. If it was a peacock herl or pheasant tail body then absolutely counter wrap with the wire.
Could I have some help please. What is "the appropriately lengthed" hacked. Can't slap these on the hackle gauge. Thanks for the great videos. I'm a beginner and every fish (6) I've caught has been on your flies.
About a hook shank in length. But, don't sweat the length too much. It is often hard to find feathers, or parts of feathers that are short enough. Just keep it reasonable.
this is a nice fly, but nowhere near as effective as the original with rabbit torax and peacock casing! we tie in Brown English partridge before the bead as hares ear spider nymph! or put the partridge under the wing casing as legs! George Daniel said it best patterns doesn't matter its getting the nymph down quickly but the original Irish pattern can't be passed on Irish rivers, I've tried dozens of variants! variants work for retailers but traditional patterns are tried and tested and beings lost through variants of variants! and BS syntactic materials!

A very fine educational video on tying a very effective pattern. Thank you and tight lines.
These videos are so clear and easy to follow. I really appreciate it as I'm new to the hobby!

I like how you talk about how to use it, most don’t
After 25ish years of tieing, I still learn. Never seen the sticky stick thingy to pick up the bead before.
Now that's a gold ribbed hares ear with a little flashback! Thanks for tying that beauty up.
This fly is a killer. It certainly has all of the bells and whistles.

Looks great! Love your videos. Clear and Concise.

All about the practice mate, I'm the same
Great resource for those looking to learn by watching the experts.
Excellent video
Yet another superb video. Gonna tie some of these right now. Thanks.
I love your videos. Thanks for posting them.
Going to tie a few of these this week. Thanks for the video.
I find that scratching the partridge feather with a notched Kieth Richard's guitar pick helps format the feather for palmering

ive learned alot from you awesome videos and this has become one of my best patterns . Thanks again

Oh damn…I never considered using hares mask for the tail. That really does complete the entire “hares ear” package huh? Lol
On the flash-ola back...you can put a small drop of thin solar-easy to enhance the shine on the back
That is one cool looking hare's ear! I bet crappie or bluegill will tear that up.
I like that one,good work.ATB Steve.
Very cool!
Great instructions!

Great videos! Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the video. I love this fly. You should try it on a size 14 3xl curved shank stimulator hook. That's usually how I tie them
It's a Rite Bobbin. I like them a lot.
soft hackle nymphs cant go wrong
Absolutely.
the best fly ever!!!
Nice !!
All the best.
Paolo
Similar to a Dirty Bird, great fly, esp when Caddis are active, or maybe PMDs. Thanks.
Still undecided.
Nice fly, thank you!
Can you add full legend in video description?

What size flashabou is that? It seems wider than what I've got. Source?
Great video. Any idea if your going to do the Jacklin's March Brown?
Another fine video. What type of vise do you use?
Is there a cheap tying kit to make small nymph you recommend ?or am I better off getting separate ?
Is this one similar to the fly mentioned by John Gierach's in his classic novel Trout Bum?
If one is lacking partridge hackle what would be a good substitute? any soft hackle? or do you think the colour/stiffness is important here?
+Gregory Beauchamp Hen back is fine, it's just that partridge has such nice crisp markings that make it the preferred choice for me.
Do you not want to wrap the wire opposite the direction of the material? Or do you find that matters?
It doesn't really matter on a dubbed body like this as there is no delicate material beneath the wire that you're trying to protect. If it was a peacock herl or pheasant tail body then absolutely counter wrap with the wire.
With Dia-Riki gone what is your go-to hook company?

so I just bought some head cement today for dry flies...and I was wondering if the head cement would add any unwanted weight to the fly?
outdoorsman 1862
I wouldn't put head cement on dry flys. You want dry flies to float
Dyna King Ultimate Indexer
Nice ty!! Tight l😅ines🐛🕷️🐜!!!!
do you have any recommendations for the soft hackle other than partridge?
What are you using to cut the thread once you are done whip finishing your fly? It looks like some kind of chisel.
It is the other end of his whip finish tool that has been sharpened to a chisel-like point.
can u tie the baetis rhodani next ?
How do I sharpen the back of my whip finish to make a blade? I've seen it in a lot of your videos and was just wondering.
This video should help ua-cam.com/video/IIelGE5kJ6M/v-deo.html
tightlinevideo Thanks!
What kind of fur do you use at 1:18?Thank you
what was that bobbin?
Hello sir could u send me some of these if I pay you
