As they say... You ASK if you can keep the shoes on, but as a polite Swede (probably the same in all of Nordic countries), we would probably say:
- It's okey, you can keep your shoes on.
And when the guests have gone home, you stand there, vacuuming your whole house because who knows in what kind of mess your guests have been walking in/on before they came to your home.
But just the thought of wearing shoes inside your house... Hallå, liksom! That's a BIG no-no. NO! When I'm home, I always walk around barefeet and I want my floors to be as clean as can be. Dust I don't mind. I love my "dust rats". 😂 Well, perhaps not... 😊

I'm from Norway and lived in Sweden for a semester, sharing a hallway / kitchen / living room with 10 other people. They were from Norway, Sweden, Austria, Germany and Hungary. Everyone took their shoes off. I remember having cleaning duty and the area by the door where we kept our shoes was UNIMAGINABLY full of gravel and almost ponds from either rain or snow. I am just so glad that nobody made the cleaning duty worse by having the whole kitchen, living room and hallways full of freaking GRAVEL!
I'm pretty sure the gravel and snow slush is why everyone takes off their shoes in Scandinavia in the first place

I had a cultural shock the first time I went to the Netherlands and no one took off their shoes. It felt so gross to me. I tried to avoid walking on their carpets, especially in the bathrooms if there was a carpet I would jump around to try and avoid stepping on them. Even though I have visited the Netherlands a few times now, I'm still not over the fact that they wear their shoes inside and it makes my skin crawl when I go inside with shoes. It's not to such a degree as americans for instance, they do take them off after a while.
Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, has or will ever baffle me more than the fact that some people don't take their shoes off in the house, or that they get upset when someone asks them to. Does tracking dirt and bacteria from outside throughout a house not bother you? If you keep your shoes on in your own house, are you not worried about getting athletes foot or some other foot condition from keeping your shoes on for too long?

always found it weird that in other countries, maybe mostly america that it's uncommon to take their shoes off. like do they wear shoes until they go to bed and put shoes back on when they get out of bed? they must need to clean their floors 10 times a day
In hot countries there is far less stuff that can stick to your shoes, such as snow and mud, so a few wipes on the doormat will usually do the trick. Additionally many hot countries have plenty of venomous insects that enjoy crawling into your shoes so keeping them on reduces the risk of that happening. It's a cultural difference resulting from different climates, nothing more.
@@ddandymann Not accurate lol most southeast asian countries apply the same norm of shoes belonging outside. You'll find even restaurants and some shops do this in places like Japan, Korea and Thailand.
@@cookiedollz I'm assuming you haven't been to either Japan or Korea because if you had then you would know they are definitely not hot countries. Both have climates that can best be described as temperate and both have cold winters. Take it from someone who lived in Japan to work as a ski instructor, not exactly a hot weather sport.

Also just because it's hot doesn't mean you're not dragging all sorts of shit in the house, like what about sand? plenty of sand in the hot states of the US, yet they still keep their shoes on inside the house.
Also Japan is technically both subtropical and temperate.

@@spacewolfcub idk it's still weird. I have family in Portugal, Angola, Brazil and Cabo Verde and they all take their outside shoes off at the front door and wear flip flops in the house. Walking with outside shoes on inside will get you in trouble. In my experience in those places at least, insects and animals getting inside your shoes is extremely uncommon so I definitely think it's due to wanting to keep the house clean. Idk if this is universal though since some americans that were visiting didn't take their outside shoes off 🤢

Exactly! I'm European latin and all my friends wear shoes inside the houses. Most people tend to have feet odor anyways! I prefer them to leave their shoes on. Nobody uses welcoming mats anymore or what?? They clean the dirt! Just rub the shoes on it a couple of times and it's done. We mostly use marble floors (cold floor) so it's easy to clean and dirt or water don't stick to them. Nordics use more wooden floors and carpets, I think. Which is a nightmare to clean and to preserve. So yeah, they're disguising their lazyness with supposed social rules. We should always be cleaning the floor, wearing shoes or not. So what's the point of taking them anyway?? Just delaying the inevitable... Don't listen to these people man, they have that perfection-aryan-hitler complex thing going on. It's crap. IKEA is also nothing special since we already have tons of other options in the same domain for decades. Just blonde dumb shit dude... Now that's a true stereotype! Meatballs are not even Swedish... I'm German and lived in Norway for a year. When my exchange organisation stressed how important it is in Norway to take off your shoes in the house I assumed they meant like taking off your shoes before you even step through the door because I just couldn't imagine how anyone would actually _wear shoes inside the house_ . That resulted in me running late for a bus once but taking off my shoes to grab something I forgot in my room because I didn't want my host mom to get angry lol. Americans man...

I mean, We, usually, don't face mud or snow and we don't use carpets as well. However, our houses are actually, very clean. I don't know if we just clean them a lot or something. Although, I see many people changing their behavior and not wearing shoes at home. Culture changes as people discover another way to live. IKEA furniture is the easiest thing ever to put together, I put together my entire room on my own when I was twelve. It couldn’t be easier even if they made the instructions into a picture book for kids, o no wait they’ve already done that.
I know! I don’t understand why so many people complain. I’ve put together so much IKEA furniture and never had trouble with any of it.
Following the instructions is a crucial part of finding it easy or challenging to assemble Ikea furniture. If you’re in a rush, only quickly glance at directions, or just assume that you will psychically divine the purpose of every tiny piece: you’re gonna have a bad time.

In Alaska there's snow in the winter, mud in the spring, and dirt in the other seasons, of course the footwear comes off. Paved-over regions might be a little different.

I think any person from a Scandinavian country can agree that the coffee question is irrelevant. I mean, 50 cups of American "coffee" (brown water) equals 1 Scandinavian cup.
Their 4-5 cups is like a tablespoon of regular Scandinavian coffee.
I personally would rather guests take off their shoes when entering my house BUT I would provide the option of house slippers bc I feel it adds comfortability.

Mediterraneans and Latinos are used to be outside the house all the time, because of the temperate weather, that's why it's uncommon to take your shoes off, you'd just need to put them back on right away. That's my theory as a Mediterranean.
That would make more sense. Northern European nations like Britain, Germany and the Nordic nations generally the weather is colder and wetter so our shoes would be dirtier and so walking through someone’s house with wet muddy shoes would enrage us

Taking off your shoes is normal in Eastern Europe. Two reasons to do this: 1) you don't want dirt all over the floor 2) you give your feet the rest and skin needs to breath. I know in many countries with warm climate and "clean" streets it's a thing not to take shoes off. But I still don't understand how you could torture yourself like that? Walking all day long in shoes... And when you took it off? In bedroom right before go to bed?

I'll explain why in LATAM many people dont take their shoes off.
In here we dont have heating on tje floor and in winter is incredibly cold (here where I live in Chile at least) so it would he rude to ask people to remove their shoes. What we dont is to clean tjem outside as best as we can.
I personaly use slipers at home, but I wouldnt ask people to remove their shoes.
I dont drink coffee much cause im not a huge hot drink fan but i ingest a lotttt of caffiene. And i take my shoes off even if people say "oh no its fine leave them on". No. No shoes on carpet. Shoes are outside things (or take them off like straight away once inside)

As a Danish person many of these answers confused me. I have honestly had both parents and friends get mad at me for being a couple of minutes late (you don't show up early either btw.) and WHAT??? is with the not taking your shoes off? Dude, who knows what you stepped in out there?? Also, skipping in que? What .... I am the type of person who will actually loudly complain if someone moves up to a new register opening and don't wait for the people who have been standing on line in another que to move over. ... Also how would you go about skipping in a que anyway? I thought we were supposed to be the polite ones up here but I cannot imagine a scenario where I step in front of someone in a line and that does not automatically end with the people behind me either verbally ripping me a new asshole and/or punching me in the face.
It’s the same in Britain - queueing, being on time and taking your shoes off in someone else’s house are incredibly important and if you don’t do it you’re considered incredibly rude
I’m super Scandinavian and the only house I don’t always take my shoes off at is my dads house because in the winter the floor is cold and he tells me not to if I don’t have slippers and he also needs new carpet in the living area so he doesn’t care about the carpet at the moment.
I have always always removed my shoes when entering a house...my gf and her family on the other hand...it is like the shoes are glued on...it drives me nuts!

What??? I always take the shoes off! I dunno the thought of walking outside with shoes and then walking inside your house or your friends house with the shoes on just seems so disrespectful. Plus I've been brought up that way so...there's that lol
It’s not the British culture to take your shoes off when entering the home but I would say more and more people are doing it. I didn’t grow up in a house where you’re expected to but I definitely think it’s cleaner. However, if someone has a legit reason for keeping them on fair enough, my dad is disabled and his shoes help him walk so I’d never ask him to take his off when entering my home.
I will never quite understand why you would not take your shoes off. Like, dirt is a thing? Also, feet odor?
