- Per the Associated Press: President Donald Trump is moving closer toward his goal of creating a Space Force, just not as the separate military department he envisioned.
The Space Force instead will begin as part of the Air Force - similar to how the Marine Corps is part of the Navy - but could become its own separate department in the future. That's according to senior administration officials who briefed journalists on a directive Trump planned to sign Tuesday establishing the Space Force.
Trump says it's needed to ensure U.S. dominance in space. Some lawmakers have expressed concerns about the need and potential cost.
Cost details will be included in the 2020 budget proposal Trump sends Congress next month.
Administration officials spoke on condition of anonymity under grounds rules set by the White House.

A lot of private companies such as some of those you mention have already claimed rights to minerals only found in space. Which means the private sector and I'm sure even the military complex is alot further then we are lead to believe. Exciting time we are living in.
Why do Presidents of the USA age so quickly? I am a patriot of Trumps but I bet sometimes he wishes he had never won. Why?. It is inevitable that earth will suffer further extinction events in its future. And one day, the earth will not exist at all. If our species is to survive, we should be actively investing in space technology and advancing our ability to explore it. the sooner we begin, the sooner we can progress beyond the confines of a singular planetary body. If Americas legacy as superpower, is to give the world the technology and means to do that. The legacy of the United States will last for millennia after it no longer even exits. And in the short term, there are vast opportunities space exploration can give us. There are unlimited quantities of minerals needed here on earth, we can greatly expand our knowledge of science, and the universe, perhaps finally discover some form of life on another planet, and who knows, we could even bring the world together for a greater cause. Because once you look to space, religion, in-fighting, and petty differences seem, insignificant. The space industry is the future of humanity, and will one day surpass annual military spending. Trump, is in fact ahead of the curve.

a military Space Force. We do not need to support the further expansion of the
military into space, we need to do the opposite and shrink the military. We
need to deescalate conflict not consolidate and expand conflict. This should be
common sense. I think it is. I do not accept the argument that the US needs to
be the biggest gun on the block. I don’t think the government needs to instill
fear and mistrust of others in the population. That is not the right attitude.
What are we if we continue to lust after power and control at the end of a gun
barrel in the name of defense? I think statistically the US looks like a
sickly, slightly educated, slave driver and cook, armed to the teeth wielding
the newest and biggest guns around. I don’t like that image, I don’t want to
see the US viewed in this way but history and present reality support this
image. This must change.
@British National Conservative Yes, but it sets a trend towards the militarization of space and that is not the right direction we or any nation needs to go in. And who will be attacking the sats? Right now there are only so many space able nations... I don't see this as a step that needs to be taken. If a sat is attacked than we could address the issue through our current systems and organizations, we don't need to consolidate and expand militarized activity in to space. Space should be viewed as a place of peace and respect of others activities. When we have space hotels and travel between planets than it would be needed to have police like activity but not military and war like activity, there is a distinction.

The idea of space military came into my mind when I was in college back in 2006. Back in that days I wondered why the US didn't do it. In today warfare, it's all about speed. Speed determines winners and losers.
