Hi Ed. You can get away without gaffers tape, but I recommend tethering the camera to the pole with *something.* The part the camera attaches to is designed to detach from the pole, and I can imagine it detaching unintentionally. Of course, it would be an expensive loss if it did. That said, it never happened to me. But I like to plan for everything. Quik Pod sells a little accessory for that purpose. I didn't buy it simply because it wouldn't have arrived in time for my trip. Good luck!
Great video! Love the colors! Did you have any of the "jello" effect that had to be corrected in editing? I had a lot of the jello effect on my snorkeling trip. I mostly hand held my GoPro. I wonder if using a pole would help this.
Yes, I do notice the yellow ghosting. I don't know if I ever noticed this on things I have shot with GoPro Hero 2. What filter were you using from backscatter? The names are shallow, dive, deep, etc... Thanks
I used the original Backscatter Flip3. It was a simple flip-it-on or flip-it-off operation, which I would flip on at around 15 feet. Pretty limited, but better than nothing, and certainly better than cheaper options on the market which simply snapped on, so your footage would be very red at shallow depths. They've since gotten more advanced with the shallow/deep option, but I don't have one yet.
How is that Quick Pod Explorer II holding up? I have read a lot of poor reviews about it and was wondering how it holds up long term? I have been looking for an extendable for scuba diving...the first one I had (not a Quick Pod Explorer II but other brand) fell apart on me after first use...so now I am a little skeptical and trying to do my due diligence before spending my cash on another...
Hi Bobby, I can't say I've used it enough to really "put it through the paces." It's been on about 6 dives, plus some chlorine filled pools, and it's doing fine so far. I certainly wouldn't say it's built to take abuse, but I have no complaints as of yet. The way I look at it... if you get even 10 dives out of it, that's $5 per dive video, or the same as what I'd spend on the energy bars in my dive bag. If/when the thing falls apart I'll be sure to come back and update everyone. Good luck!
They wouldn't. That's why you need to have it tethered to you in some way, in case you lose your grip on it. There are other products that are made to float however. Take care. - Justin
Have you figured out how to prevent the yellow ghosting? I just bought the Flip3.1 and want to prevent it in my shots if possible. I noticed in their promo video they had it with the same ghosting too, but your video is a lot less severe than most people's. Maybe good lights helps?
Hi Kutibh, I've found the yellow ghosting to be inevitable at the price point of this gear. The only reason it may seem less severe in this vid is that I shot a ton and was very selective in the edit. But trust, the ghosting drove me crazy! I also did some color correction in FCP X, and in retrospect, I think I went overboard on the saturation.
Kutibh Chihabi I haven't used any SRP products, so I can't make that comparison. Honestly, the "jelly" effect caused by the GoPro bothers me more, so if I were investing more funds I would put it towards a better stabilizing device.

Would you get away without using the gaffer tape? Looking to buy the Quik Pod Explorer II for some dive trips this year

What exactly is the yellow ghosting? I can't notice it.
Which one of the filter did u use? the "DEEP" or the "DIVE" one.
I don't believe they were yet offering those options when I purchased my Flip3, but it's likely equivalent to the DIVE.
Would the Quikpod Pro and Explorer II both float?
They wouldn't. That's why you need to have it tethered to you in some way, in case you lose your grip on it. There are other products that are made to float however. Take care. - Justin

***** Do you think SRP may be better? I haven't seen many videos from SRP that have the yellowing

Very cool!
