Point to make on the Locky comparison - 2001 he did captain games 2 and 3 cause Tallis was injured and game 3 he was MOTM in the decider at the old ANZ stadium in Brisbane, where as Clearly hasn’t yet stepped up in a deciding game 3
Sorry Kemp but Tom absolutely nailed it when he said that Cleary isn't the reason for the past NSW wins - it's because he's simply been one part of good teams around him and any other "solid" half would have won in those teams. The issue which you can't seem to see is that the difference between him and the "greats" is that they single-handedly produce plays which can win Origin games - Munster, Locky, JT, Johns, Langer etc. have all done it, but Cleary hasn't done that and seemingly never will. That's the problem - he's not the game breaker we need. Time to give Nicho a go, or even Reynolds or Moses have potential, your buddy Cleary is not the guy. Lose the bias buddy.
Latrell, Tommy or teddy on the other hand all have absolutely blown the game apart on their own volition. Which absolutely blows my mind that after one sub par game from teddy everybody wants his head. While Cleary has had 1-2 good games for nsw and somehow he escapes Mitchell Pearce treatment
Lockyer lost 3 series in a row at Cleary’s age. John’s wasn’t even starting. He clutched when he was like 30. Langer lost 4 series in a row. JT is an outlier & part of the 8 in a row that warps everyone’s mind. Your bizarre need for Cleary to be clutch rather than just winning series and allowing others to be clutch makes zero sense. It’s like saying if Cleary goes on to win 5/8 Origin series but doesn’t completely dominate a series then he’s not a good Origin player. As I said on the poddy. You guys are happy to lay blame at his feet when you lose but when he wins it was everyone else that got the job done. Massive double standard & illogical.
@@BlokeInABar I think the difference is kempy, as Tom mentioned Cleary seems to be immune to criticism while other champions who have absolutely dominated origin in recent years are the first to blame instead. Teddy has more than proved legendary status in the origin arena, he has been by far nsw’s best player in the last 5 years, won multiple premierships, man of the series awards and is the current captain of his country and state. But after just ONE below average performance, he has been absolutely scathed in the media and seemingly his position in the team is SUPPOSEDLY threatened? Think back to Mitchell Pearce and his early origin career, at the tender age of 19 he was tasked with the enormous task of single handedly defeating the best origin team to ever play the game. Or so it seemed, because whenever the blues lost, HE was to blame, HE was the scapegoat, at 19! Not 26 years of age. Although it’s impossible to know for sure, but hypothetically if Nathan Cleary faced the same task as Pearce in ‘08, the results would’ve been the same. Maybe the hate is more to do with both teddy and Pearce being roosters players? I don’t know. However, these days Cleary has the privilege of playing along side arguably one of the strongest NSW’s teams in origin history. A team that when they’re superstar backs are fit and firing, they are unstoppable and have proven capable of putting on cricket scores. In these situations, Cleary just needs to make the pass and let them go to work. Where he seemingly has failed when other champions have excelled is icing the game when their backs are up against the wall, when the game has come down to the wire, like Thurston, Cronk, slater and Lockyer have done time and time again. And I would say it’s fair enough for the NSW fans to be frustrated, especially when a man touted as a future immortal hasn’t yet lived up to those expectations after nearly 6 years at the helm. I do believe that the pressure nsw puts on these playmakers, in the media, with tags like “future immortal” “the clone of Greg Inglis” “the next Andrew johns”, may contribute to their supposed failures to meet expectations, and I think that’s a very understated key factor that separates qld from nsw. Somehow qld always seem to produce players that play well beyond their expectations or performances at club level (Boyd, Gagai, Myles, DCE, Hunt, Adam Mogg etc.), maybe it has to do with the fact QLD always seem to achieve underdog status, which I’m sure would take a lot of pressure on their players. Either way, as a NSW fan I can’t tell you how fkn frustrating it is.
Eddie's point about wanting NSW to start winning the tight ones is 100% on the money. Am I happy when we flog QLD? Of course. But Teddy doing a QLD to QLD was more impressive to me than the record win
I agree with Tom 100% about Cleary. He’s good but he’s not some immortal everyone is making him out to be and he doesn’t own the 7 jersey. I also 1000% agree with Eddie it almost seems taboo to question and criticise Cleary
The thing you keep forgetting to point out is that this is meant to be the best era of NSW in the origin arena and we lose to many games that we should win. We won 2021 in a year that the rules dictated the nrl that year.
With Tommy, he was never actually diagnosed with a concussion. Not from the independent doctor, NSW doctor or doctors post origin. To quote the club statement, “Tom has not been diagnosed with concussion from either NSW Dr Nathan Gibbs, Dr Bloomfield, or independent doctor, Dr Chris Levi”. The NRL was made aware that he wasn’t actually concussed before Manly officially appealed, so the process was just running some tests and signing off. Don’t know why this wasn’t made more public but there you go
Yeah I read that but what I'm not understanding is he failed his HIA. So I dunno how that wouldn't be considered a concussion? I dunno there's clearly way more to it with way more intelligent people than me dealing with it.
If QLD wins this series munster will be 4/7 in origin series. 2017-2023 Arguably one of the greatest origin debuts of all time and constantly making big plays all the time in the origin arena. Heads and shoulders above cleary when it comes to origin.
We can’t keep putting other players down to hide Nathan Cleary’s origin performances. If you are potentially the next immortal we shouldn’t have to baby you idgaf.
I remember Denan (and if this is not true sorry Kempy I’ll delete) was calling for Dailey’s jumper pre 2022 if I’m not mistaken, even tho you can argue almost every NSW team Chez has faced he’s never been the favourite to win against those stacked sides.
@@bighole9790 Very different for pressure to be on a 30-31-year-old thats won 1 out of 3 series at 7 and unfortunately hasn't fired a shot for a decade in club land (in regards to fighting for a premiership) compared to a 25 year old half coming of back to back premierships and 3/5 series wins. The comparison isn't even close.
I think you’re making the argument for Cleary worse Kempy imo. The back to back winning 7 potential 3 peat 7 not getting the job done in these close games deserves some criticism. And he definitely hasn’t played horrible in origin by any stretch BUT he’s just been mid at best ( For his standards of course). If Cleary was losing against sides that are clear cut better I wouldn’t even care BUT he’s not. And I get that other Origin greats couldn’t get the job done on different occasions especially early in their career like Nathan but I’m still consistent and hold it against the greats as well. I’m also fine with calling for Chez jumper a few years ago too it just seemed inconsistent with me toward Cleary.
Kempys argument for Cleary falls apart on a couple fronts. 1. When he says Reynolds, Walker, and Moses didn’t win an Origin series, he is ignoring the fact that all 3 players only played 2 games each at the most. None of them were given the patience Cleary is given. They were all mercilessly dropped and never got another chance. Of course they never won a series, they never even got to play a whole series. 2. No one expects Cleary to be Munster and do those insane things, but we do expect to create more points than he does and to take control of the team like he does at club level, because he is the half. 3. In the series Cleary has won, he was very quiet in his first series, missed half of game 2 and all of game 3 of the second series (the 2 games nsw actually won to win 2019) and was understandably quiet in 2021 as he let the outside backs do their thing Everyone knows he’s a great player, but he has had 5 Origin series and is into his 6th and is yet to do anything like he does at club land. His kicking game was not anywhere near the level he achieves in the NRL, the attack lacked direction. Those are the things Cleary is selected to do but I have not seen him do them at this level for a while
The reason they might not pick Nico for game 2 is that he is a utility player that can cover multiple positions. NSW might pick a specialist 7 and keep Nico on the bench to cover their bases. That would be the only reason they overlook Nico for that starting spot.
Criticise Cleary, Teddy, whatever, but not enough criticism of Fittler. The dude is cooked. Also Hynes as a rookie at Suncorp for a must-win would be the dumbest fucking selection ever.
As some of the greats say, forwards decide who win, the backs decide by how much, and Cleary has never had a say in them winning close games even when NSW have had extremely dominant forwards...

As Denan mentioned, Slater picked players based on defending against this Penrith combination. Billy's footy knowledge is freakish, add to the fact that JT and Smithy are also involved, of course they have worked out how to defend against this Penrith attack.
