  • This is a video clip of my recent work, portrait of my friend and model, Sean. I used CarOthello pastel pencils on sanded paper. It took about 2 weeks to finish it. If you would like to learn about my pastel technique, check out my workshop schedule, or you can purchase my tutorial ebooks and DVD on my website: www.icuong.com

I know this sounds odd but I love the sound of the pencil on the paper you've chosen! It also sounds like it's sharpening the pencils as you use them!

If one was really good at this sort of thing and came across this, it could be so disheartening they might wish they had never seen it, and therefore dislike it. The alternative, of course, would be to see the possibilities and take their game up. If I was told this was an oil painting I would believe it.

Although no one could possibly think this portrait and his others are any short of phenomenal, I gotta think the dislikes had more to do with the artist not sharing his techniques on various aspects of the portraiture. There was absolutely NO time spent showing the hair or the leather and wood on the chair. They obviously required a somewhat different technique than the scratch method he uses on the face. Watching this and most of his other portraitures are a waste if one is trying to pickup some instructional info on the total portrait.

I just happened to find your video trying to find some on skin tones. It is so touching I got tears in my eyes. The way your pencil is touching the paper is like a soft whisper. This is one of my problems I need to lighten up on my pencil. I know I will NEVER be as GREAT as you but watching helped me so much. Like the green and lavender in the skin and the way you put down the strokes to follow the muscles in his face. Your art is so AMAZING I'm going to watch ALL your videos....and learn I'm sure. Thank you

The four dislikes probably came from kids who are used to watching time lapse art here on YT. This is mind-blowing, Mr. Nguyen. Thank you for sharing your technique.

Really love how your base drawing is so angular. Looks a lot like a sculpt, or maybe Singer Sargent's style.
Funny, too, is that I would have stopped painting the face around the 10 min mark. You kept on. I've got a lot to learn from you.

Hi Cuong! Me again! I tried out your technique on a ball drawn on a piece of tan Pastelmat paper--following step by step instructions from your "girl with the purple rose" tutorial that I had downloaded from your site awhile back. It came out looking like *%%#! Perhaps I'll try it again on a piece of Belgian Mist sandpaper that I have on hand. But either way, this is not a technique for beginners IMO. Very daunting! Of course you make it look easy, but then your skill level is through the stratosphere! Thank you again my friend!
