I used to love Subbuteo as a lad and I was lucky enough to get the Munich World cup addition. All went well for a year or two the competitive pressure got to me and I developed a form of Subbuteo "yip"...similar to a putting yip...I had to stop playing!

ahhh, 1982. First World Cup I ever saw on TV in Quebec, Canada. Was rooting for Platini's France, and we all know what happened.

Great show... I've got loads of subbuteo teams and merchandise from the late 70's ..Not played for over 25 - 30 years.. you've inspired me to recover from the loft and convert my 8 year old grandson to play this great game..

I remember now. When I left school in 1978 and started my first job, I decided that I was now too old to play Subbuteo, so I gave my entire set to a neighbours children. This included my Munich WSE (This also included my specially painted all white, with red/blue piping which represented Ansbro FC. I even re-wrote the entire history of the Football League and FA Cup to include this football club). If I could have any part of that collection back, it would be that one team. In the years since, I have often looked at teams that play in a combination of white, red and blue, like Palace or Barcelona (almost) and determine which of their kits would have been the modern day equivalent of the Ansbro shirts

Well I can thank this lockdown for one thing, rediscovering Subbuteo and this UA-cam site. Even my son, his best mate, my son in law and two of my nephews are getting into it lol
    Bloody brilliant. Keep it up

Casdon Football with Bobby Charlton on its box on the shelf in the background. Had that but never lasted because Subbuteo took over my life and the rest is history.
    Great show as always.
Nice to see Adam, Richard and mates at the Old Sods.

The story behind the Casdon game and how Sir Bobby Charlton came to be on the box is a fascinating one that we cover in our DVD. The game sold really well for well over a decade. It's still really popular here among the youngsters that visit the studio :). Cheers Keith

I remember that the Subbuteo version of the England "Admiral" strip hit the shops in the summer of 1975. It was initially sold as an accessory (C138), and came in a special red-white-and blue box. It also led to the quickest about-face you could ever hope to see...
As a confirmed traditionalist even at the tender age of 14, I absolutely HATED the Admiral strip on sight, as England sported it for the first time against Czechoslovakia in a European Championship qualifying match at Wembley in October 1974. I decided there and then that I wanted nothing to do with it...and my Subbuteo England team would continue to turn out in their traditional plain white shirts, as always.
Fast forward to (I think) June 1975, and Sherwood Miller's toy shop in Walsall. The sales lady - well used to my regular visits and acquisition of Subbuteo items - notified me that they had "the new England teams" in stock. My interest piqued, I asked to see one. She obliged, but seemed very anxious to let me know that "they're 75p" (at a time when the regular teams cost about 55p - 60p). She told me the price at least three times while I examined the item, but when I left minutes later I was not only the proud owner of a new England team, but an instant convert to the new design...a fondness which persists to this day (my Subbuteo England STILL plays in this strip).
On a completely different point: the problem with the Lightweights and the sponsored shirts, etc. is that by the 80s the designs of football shirts were beginning to change so often that by the time Subbuteo caught up and had the latest version on the market, it had either already been replaced, or had at best a few months to go before yet ANOTHER new design or sponsor. There must have been a lot of redundant, out of date stock left on the shelves in those days...

Sharp is obv the best ever jersey. The greatest collar to ever live... Cantona Cantona Cantonaaaa. Best attacking mid forward to do it and quit in his prime ... Giggs, Scholes, Cole the Nevilles on each side, Schmeichel in goal.... the 97 squad in unmatched . I am however a 80's baby in America so i may be biased. Thanks for the vids!

Another great nostalgic show. Good to see those Villa retro shirts!, the 57 one never ages. Sometimes feel a little sad watching as I remember all the Subbuteo I had & kick myself for letting it go!!. Would like to start again, but the old stuff ain’t around any more. Those new disc shape players are garbage!, that ain’t real subbuteo. P.s, some of those passes you recreate are brilliant, wonder how many takes it took, lol. Nice one guys.

Thanks Gary - share your view on the 57 shirt. A lot of the old stuff is still about - some of it can get pricey but you could get period goals pitch and half a dozen teams for under £ 40. If you're serious about getting restarted drop me a line at info@tabletopyears.com. Cheers Keith

David Ginola also played for Everton but his subbuteo counterpart would have been more mobile.

I was kinda lucky in that by the time the dreaded Zombies came along, I was in my late teens and had moved to Australia, so I never saw them at the time. Mind you, I don't think the Lightweights were a great improvement...not aesthetically, anyway. To me they look knock-kneed, and too skinny. And having tried them, I think they are rubbish to play with...certainly not in the same league as the beloved Heavyweights I grew up with (and still use exclusively, ever since my return to Subbuteo in 2006)...
