  • About this video: Looking for Queen Cells to Stop Spring Swarms | Inspecting the Bee Barns
    Today we will be inspecting Bee Barns in the home yard looking for swarm cells. These are pre-split inspections. If I find a swarm cell I will be removing the queen and about 3 lbs. of bees for a NUC. Special appearance of Mrs. Bug Farmer too!

    Although this beekeeping channel is primarily about beekeeping I am also a quasi pepper who believes in becoming self-sufficient. With that in mind, I have started a garden, planted fruit trees, replaced the hedges in front of my house with blueberry bushes, and have recently built a chicken coop. In short, I will share a lot more than beekeeping on this channel.
    A little about me:
    I am a person who believes you are never to old to learn something. Be it beekeeping, farming, raising chickens, painting, filming and editing video, making wine, beer, bread, cheese, and other fermentation consumables, play guitar etc... If I see something I want to try I start it immediately. If there is one thing I could choose to pass along to my children this would be it. Never be afraid to try. My wife famously told me once that if you are not willing to be bad at something, you will never be good at it. I am bad at quite a few things.
    I hope you find my beekeeping videos fun and entertaining as well as get something out of them. I hope I inspire someone to get out and try something new. If you do enjoy my videos, please take a moment to spread the word about this channel and help it, and myself, grow. Have a great day and BEE Happy!

    There is a Stanley Plum tree I planted covered in white blooms ahead of the Peach & Pear trees. Last week I was Branding some Livestock because the paint mark has faded, there are a few more as I find them. I just found a Yellow Queen, her days are numbered as she is a granny; a NUC and a frame or two of sealed brood and its all good in two weeks. New honey foundation went on yesterday as I'm a little behind your weather.

      Don't you just love the smell of plumb trees. It's awesome. Where abouts are you located? Do you sell cows and do you grain finish them? I am looking for a nice butchered grain finished cow for the freezer.

      @@BugFarmerBeesI'm in Virginia and was referring to the paint mark on the queens LOL! Feeding six lbs of grain to a cow daily is a lot unless you are a wheat producer, I did that out west in my younger years.

    Got a few plum trees around my bee yard, they do smell wonderful. Black locust blossoms smell good too, still a little ways off from them yet.

      Geese are the worst. When we moved her i thought they were great. Now I consider them the worst pest I have ever had to deal with. The rip the grass out from the roots, shit everywhere, and pluck their feathers out last summer and gum up the lawnmower. They are the worst!!!

    Armchair beekeeper here. I would give one of those frames of capped brood (sans queen cells) from the Krynoc (sp.?) to that week hive.

      The weak hive has picked up her production since that video was filmed. I actually think the Sage hive was my most recent swarm. Now they live in the little green NUC and will be given to the wife :-)

    I’ve tried all different marking pens and gave up and switched to Testors enamel model paint. There is a fluorescent kit that I use as glue to apply the numbered discs from Dadant. if the disc gets knocked off, the paint still stays. Having numbers on queens makes record keeping easier.

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  6 місяців тому

      How long does it take for the enamel paint to dry and how do the bees deal with it? Does the Dadant numbers come with glue? Do you apply with tweezers? Sorry for all. of the questions but I think numbered queens would be awesome.

    Man you have wonderful eye sight I can go into a hive and never find her. On the hive beetles did u put down grubx, I got some beeweaver Queen bees I never got any honey from them they swarm all the time the swarm would swarm they swarmed them selves to death. it was in there blood I do not have any more. of that stock. Now it was several years ago. so maybe they are better but I told my self never again. They were the only bees I had problems with I had russian at 1 time to they were very aggressive. but the really produced the honey, they would pin my jeans to my legs it was bad. any way again I enjoyed the video nice to meet your wife. her eye sight is great as well. Have a blessed week

      The GrubX goes down on Sunday :-). I think the beeweaver mixed with the italians and made super italians :-)

    I read an article that said that the soil in our area is too acidic for hive beetles on account of our continuous rain. (They should be everywhere now due to nationwide transport of bees...) I wonder if it would work to acidify your soil more around your hives and if that would make a difference in the hive beetle population?

      I am treating this year with a grub killer. I will add it around the hives tomorrow afternoon.

    When do you takeoff the quilt boxes?

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  6 місяців тому +1

      Those aren't quilt boxes but I an see how they can be confused for a quilt box because I do insert a hive pillow in the winter. Those are control boxes for my hive heating and cooling system. I have several videos in the library explaining them and showing how to build one if interested.

    Hi, I enjoy your videos. What is the outside temp when you are inspecting your hives? Did you make a split out of the hive withthe queen cells?

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  6 місяців тому

      I usually don't inspect unless the temp is above 55F. Lately we have had temps in the 60's and 70's. The hive with the queen cells is the Crynock hive. Yes, I took their queen and about 3 lbs of bees to make a NUC for the farm yard. Now I have a Crynock hive in the #3 position at the farm :-)

    I joined the bee association and one of the members attended a seminar at Purdue university and he said what they started using due to the poor quality of bee markers. Some are also going with the numbered stickers. I ordered from Amazon in a variety pack that has all the colors we need.

    I think you need to leave the queen isolated for a few more minutes before putting her back in the hive. If the paint is wet the workers will take it off.

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  6 місяців тому

      I agree. I try to let her dry before reinserting her into the hive but the bees are diligent in their cleaning of her.

    Veno Farms was working on it but he hasn’t posted updates for some time. I’m not handy with the saw but the side bars is the big adjustment from traditional frames to bee barn frames.

    • @billwebster327

      Mann lake and other suppliers sell just the top and bottom bar. If this beebarn takes off the extended sidebars should be an option.

      @@BugFarmerBees He has some great videos, I'm building bee barns this year. This will be my 2nd year beekeeping.
      How do you do splits when you have bee barns, do you just never move comb, only queens/bees? Would you ever take a queen cell off a bee barn frame and just move it? Pop out the plastic foundation she's on and pop it in a deep for the nuc?
