We sailed on her to Mexico in 2019. Loved it! Royal Class has the roomiest atriums. We appreciated the large deck area astern of the buffet on Deck 16. But when she was built the Princess faithful apparently raised a huge stink about there not being a stern pool. Sooooo.....Regal Princess comes along and Voila! Stern pool and no large deck area.
I loved Royal Princess too but yes… no promenade deck and didn’t like the crowds sometimes. Mind you, we were on it last Xmas! But still, it’s a beautiful ship!
I agree about lamenting the lack of full wrap around promenade decks and steamer chairs on many newer larger ships whose amenities I otherwise love! Very fond of the Holland America Vista and Signature class ships for their real teak decks and steamer chairs... Nevertheless I don't avoid the Royal class ships (Princess) or Virgin Voyages ships, or Holland Pinnacle class (have wrap around promenade but not real teak and lifeboats fully block the view along the sides rather than being overhead). But always thrilled to find my itinerary available on one of the more classically designed ships
I agree with your pluses. In addition to no "boat deck", I also really don't like the fact that they removed the night club that was adjacent to the casino. The ship no longer has a proper night club. They have late night music/dancing in the Vista Lounge in the back of the ship, but the Vista Lounge does not have a bar. A proper night club has a bar.
I have sailed on Royal 3 times. the last time was last month, Whittier to Anchorage. Nothing bad to say about the ship or the crew. My gripe is with Princess forcing both cabins occupants to buy the drink package if one wants it. No good for us, wife does not drink alcohol. So I go a la carte for drinks and still am way under the package price.
Princess Live! theatre wasn't best suited for trivia or any other sessions that involved passengers writing. Agree that the lack of outdoor promenade wasn't conducive to getting fresh air without having to go to upper decks. Also, not a fan of the walk through buffet; much prefer Coral layout at front of ship. Apart from those, Royal's got pretty much everything for her target passenger demographic.
I really love Princess Cruise. Caribbean Princess is my favorite though possibly getting old. The Naval Architecture of these big ships is not designed for beauty.
I agree: I think all of Princess’ Royal class suffered because they failed to add the promenade into the design. I thought it was just design, but I think I read it was after a ship disaster that the designs were changed for easier deployment of the lifeboats when the ship is listing. But other cruse ships have full promenade decks post-new-regs. So this is a failing for Princess - or Carnival getting in the way of classic design. I haven’t been on Royal, through I had booked her for Alaska in ‘20. Yes: I was all paid up and the works went into shutdown. I did take her sister Regal transatlantic and genuinely loved it! Then again it was my first cruise ever, so what did I know

I'm such a traditionalist that I think Titanic's partially enclosed promenade deck was a downgrade from Olympic's fully open one. 😂
Totally agree - no boat deck is a big disappointment. The narrow balconies are also a drawback on this ship. But I agree with all your likes!

It’s the deck that has the lifeboats on it. Sometimes referred to as a promenade deck.

No offence but Princess looks BORING as... I'd much prefer Cunard or P&O from what I've seen.
