I am glad this person uploaded this video. I was trying to figure out the name of the book. The girl on the bus was reading. It sounded like Oleta instead of Lolita to me so I couldn't find the book. Thanks to this video I now can.
Completely stunned by your dedication and so looking forward to seeing this movie (got a really limited run in Italy, gotta get that Blu-ray). Keep up the awesome work!
At 5:20 you missed the reference to the iconic scene from Lord of the Rings of Aragorn opening the double doors to King Théoden. It was an homage to two previous roles of Mortensen. Wonderful and really thorough list though, thanks so much for putting this together!
Good catch - I'm a big Lord of the Rings fan but hadn't seen that as a reference. It isn't as direct as the same shirt he's wearing in another film, but wouldn't surprise me if that was also a deliberate homage. Glad you enjoyed the video, I'm working on the next one now!
Nice work! I need to up my education, clearly! I loved this film and wish more people had seen it. Luckily with film, there is still time via streaming, etc. I really liked seeing all that went into the details of the film via this video. Keep 'em coming!
Seriously, this is one of my favourite short videos of all! And a I really think that Captain Fantastic rhymes with Into the Wild. Almost like: "What if Chris had returned?"
Thank you very much Gustavo, I am a fan of "Into the Wild" both the book and the movie, and hadn't considered a reading list for it, but now seriously will. Great suggestion. In the meantime, appreciate your support and be sure to subscribe for future videos on great film!
As a teacher, I think this an amazing resource, both for me and for my students! Thank you. By the way, I would love to see you do something similar for any of a number of films that have myriad common and/or/but possibly obscure cultural references. I teach English language learners who are usually unfamiliar with most of the sources of such allusions, including popular or "classic" American and British films, the Western literary canon (classics, best sellers and other popular titles), Greek and Roman mythology, English Bible translations, etc. You could create a whole channel out of doing such lists -- and what a service it would be to all (as well as a particular boon to educators)!
Hi Jennifer, thanks for a thoughtful compliment! I have made 1 more of these types of videos on "Zodiac" which you can see on my channel. I have more videos in this style in the works. Because this is a hobby for me each one takes some time to create. Please subscribe so you can check out the next ones coming! As far as what you are describing, it definitely sounds cool and like a useful project for the use of the internet. Do you have any specific films you are thinking of? I'd also say that if you saw a path to funding that project, I could produce them much faster, so I'm all ears to your suggestions. Happy to discuss further, thanks for watching
Best reading list from any movie 🎥 ever. Big mahalos for putting this together. I want to read them all! High school and college classes could be taught on this list/movie.
Thank you so much! I tried to do it by myself and missed a lot of them. Thank you, really, you helped people like that got inspired by the movie and want to know more about the Ben’s family education.
Thanks to the movie I started learning Esperanto, I think it’s a very memorable scene and you could’ve used Zamenhof’s book “Fundamento de Esperanto” as a reference, but, again, awesome, I see this video over and over and over, thanks a lot!
Hey did you get your award from youtube? Because if you continue rhis concept, your channel will be one of the best youtube channels. I love it. Great work pal!!! 👏🏻
It's been a few years now, but if I remember I searched everywhere for an Esperanto book when I made the video and found nothing I could use for the video :( glad you liked it otherwise!
okay, you got one more subscriber. undoubtedly one of my favourite movies and well, you did an amazing job putting all the reference together. Thank you.
Any plans to make more videos? Just taking a break for awhile? It's a tough road for smaller UA-camrs. Creative burnout can happen to anyone. Not to mention, other important things in life can take hold; family, finance, work, or even self-improvement & reflection. Whatever the case, I am curious.
Most, if not all, of the books on Ben's shelves are presumably STOLEN. To its credit, the movie doesn't shy away from ironies like this. It actually shows the family committing an act of coordinated shoplifting to get the items they need for celebrating their 'Noam Chomsky day'. (They pronounce it as if it were 'Gnome Chomsky'!)

Dear Kirk,
