  • Interview with Jan Hammer by phone. We chatted about his musical beginnings, Munich & the misspelling of that live album, Berkeley school of music, working as a solo artist, collaborations and Jeff Beck, the Probe and Keytar, what sets him apart from his keyboard contemporaries. We also discussed Beyond the Mind's Eye, the luxury of a home studio, music videos and of course Miami Vice. The musical time machine and gigging in a strip club!

Yeah Hammer and Zawinul truly found their voice in Synthisizers. To me Chick was always a pianist first and sounds like that on Synth. Also I like the anecdot that when Beck was asked "who his favourite guitar player was" he answered Jan Hammer.

level 42 link mentioned at the 23 min mark: their keyboardist did try doing a few hammer like solos in their early days. tunes like "theme to margaret" & other early instrumentals

Jan Hammer did not play on Apocalypse or Visions of the Emerald Beyond (Mahavishnu Orchestra) as featured here

The interviewer takes for granted that we all know in what country (Czechoslovakia) Hammer was born and grew up.
Either that or he lacks the basic professionalism of caring enough to bother asking.
It doesn’t take much time to ask someone about their childhood and family roots, but it’s almost always interesting.

I wish he wrote an autobiography, that would be something!
