  • Welcome to the Camelot Getting Started Guide. This video is the first step to understanding the interface, language, and basic logic of the application, so that you can take your first steps into the app without frustration. Before you watch the video, though, we want to reveal a secret: there is no single way to use Camelot and the reason is simple: there is no single way to put on a live performance! Camelot presents endless possibilities, but it must be understood in order to model one's real situation. At the same time, understanding Camelot's tools can inspire you to accomplish things you never before thought possible.

      @@AudioModeling I need to better understand how to control hardware and software instruments from MIDI controllers in a live performance context especially when the software instruments only ever receive in OMNI mode like Arturia's do. I'd like to be able to set the keyboard controllers' send channels and hardware instruments' receive channels to fixed values and leave them alone so that, for instance, if I've got a keyboard controller that's set to send on channel 1 and a hardware instrument that's set to receive on channel 14, either at the Scene level or the Layer level (or both) a remap from channel 1 to channel 14 is taking place.

    I'm hoping to use Camelot to operate a live keyboard rig with multiple MIDI controllers and both virtual instrument plugins within the same laptop and hardware MIDI-controllable synthesizers. Thus far I've found that if I click on enough things I can make a virtual instrument I've loaded into a Layer receive on a given MIDI channel but it's unnecessarily difficult. As a note, the Arturia plugins i'm using always operate in OMNI mode (receives on all sixteen channels at once). What I'd really like to do is have it where I can, for instance, leave one of the MIDI keyboard controllers on channel 1 and EITHER set a plugin within a Layer to channel 6 and have either the Layer or the Scene map incoming channel 1 to channel 6 OR set a plugin to channel 1 only within that Layer so that the keyboard controller is running that plugin in that Scene. The former - with or without the latter also being a possibility - would be better for hardware instruments because that way, it can just stay set to one MIDI receive channel all the time and so can the controller. But the grid of colored buttons that I'm eventually able to find and get to do what I want if I click on enough things just makes no sense to me and I've worked with MIDI since the mid-1980s. Oh - I almost forgot to mention: the MIDI controls for an instrument in a Layer need to be right there on the tile for that instrument. We shouldn't have to click around to get the weird grid of colored channel buttons.

    • @AudioModeling
      @AudioModeling  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your comment and suggestion. Everything in Camelot is designed coherently.
      The “colored grid”, i.e. the Advanced Channel Routing, is available at device level, layer level and item level, depending on the user’s needs.
      E.g. If you need to filter or remap a channel of a controller for any Setlist, you can apply it at device level (Settings -> MIDI -> Inputs -> contextual … menu).
      The “weird colored matrix” is not just a filter, where you cana enable or disable a given channle (probably, you are used to that); it is a a routing matrix. It means you can forward any Input channel to any Output channel, even with multiple assignments. That’s useful for controlling a multi-timbral synth or plugin from a single-zone controller.

    Does Camelot have the ability to pre-load all plugins in an entire setlist, or only each song?

    • @AudioModeling
      @AudioModeling  2 роки тому +1

      The software is designed to load plugins for each song, for the purpose of not overloading the device.
      So, the Scene switching within a Song is immediate, while loading the resources for a Song takes a while.
      Anyway, there are special layers called “Setlist Layers”, where the plugins are loaded at the Setlist loading and they last for the entire Setlist. Then you can “connect” such plugins on the Songs or Scenes you need.
      Basically, you can balance the resources even for a long Setlist.

    Is something like sidechain , busses,aux possible in Camelot(or a way to achieve similar outcomes)?

    Looking forward to your reply.

    • @AudioModeling
      @AudioModeling  10 днів тому

      Yes, Camelot can handle audio routing similarly to how DAWs use sidechains, buses, and auxiliary tracks. Here’s how:
      1) Layer Structure: In Camelot, each Layer acts as a complete signal path, and you can route audio between Layers. This is comparable to using buses or auxiliary tracks in traditional DAWs. For example, you can create a Layer as a master effects chain or submix and route other Layers through it using Audio Layer Connectors.
      2) Sidechain Inputs: Certain plugins, like compressors, that support sidechaining can be set up in Camelot. These sidechain inputs are recognized within the plugin's settings, and Camelot can route audio from one Layer into another Layer’s sidechain input.
      3) Mixing and Outputs: Camelot allows you to assign different outputs to Layers, enabling you to create multiple output mixes (e.g., for monitors, front-of-house, etc.), similar to how you'd use buses in other audio software. This flexibility is useful for both live and studio setups.
      For further details on audio routing and mixing in Camelot, you can refer to this tutorial: kb.audiomodeling.com/en/camelot/c/how-to/d/camelot-tutorial-audio-routing-and-mixing/
      Regarding the iPad, while Camelot has a fully functional stand-alone version for iPad, it also offers an advanced feature that allows you to connect two Camelot instances (e.g., two iPads, or an iPad and a desktop) via MIDI in primary/secondary mode (also known as master/slave). In this setup, one device acts as a remote control for the other, managing scenes, instrument changes, and MIDI parameters in real-time. This is especially useful in live performance settings.

    Hi Audio Modelling - is it possible to change between scenes, layers or even songs using midi PC (Program Change) messages. I’m using a widimaster bluetooth with my Boss SY1000 which would be sending the program change messages. Could you give a brief overview of how this is possible?

    • @AudioModeling

      Yes, it’s possible! You need to enable the “Camelot Master” controller under SETTINGS -> Remote Control -> MIDI -> From/By, and set the MIID port of your controller.
      The mapping is fixed, cannot be changed:
      - BankSelect MSB selects the current Setlist
      - BankSelect LSB selects the current Song within the selected Setlist
      - ProgramChange selects the current Scene within the selected Song

    • @AudioModeling
      @AudioModeling  Рік тому +3

      Ho John, all those Apps are Inter-App Audio (IAA) apps, not plugins.
      Camelot doesn’t support IAA for two main reasons: 1) IAA has been declared deprecated by Apple. Apple strongly recommends not to use IAA anymore. 2) IAA is a single-instace audio/MIDI technology, not a plugin format; it is useless for Camelot, since it allows multiple Scenes and instances.
      My suggestion for you is to start searching for replacement of those apps, since they could eventually not be used anymore in hosts in some future iPadOS update
