although he hasn't recorded many of the sonatas, debargue is probably the most consistently great pianist for medtner sonatas. he clearly has an affinity for the music that even the champions of medtner's music (Tozer and Hamelin notably) seem to lack. not to mention his technical chops are unreal and he can turn on the jets when he needs to. i'd love to see a full medtner cycle from him. it seems medtner is gaining more and more popularity.
Really glad to hear Debargue play this sonata. It's a solid piece and enjoys much from his treatment of it. As always, he brings out some details through voicing, rubato, and dynamics that really contribute to the interpretation and you don't hear in other renditions.
Magistral! Merci beaucoup Cher Lucas...
I am very much enjoying what Debargue is doing with Medtner - 1st sonata (Fm) & 5th sonata (Gm) are both excellent - I hope hope hope that he does more 😁🎶
Wonderful! I love this music! :) It must be a privilege to be able to play this majestic Medtner sonata at the hall that carries one of his best friends' name. You played superbly, despite the small "?"s towards the end (15:07). It comforts me to know that even the great pianists of our time can freeze for one second. The only thing that bugged me is why to play the theme at 3:29 so slowly... it shows the beautiful details, but it breaks the motion. It happens again at 13:46. I would also have considered to play the beautiful coda slower, there's plenty of details there.
Sad thing is this is so much better than the anonymous pianists who make synesthesia videos of flashing lights and colors that get millions upon millions of subscribers and views. Lucas would be a UA-cam millionaire, for the price of dignity. This is what classical music has become.
Fail to see how making synthesia videos is a less dignified way to share music with people. There are some very talented pianists out there that, for various reasons, are not concert pianists. They should be allowed - in fact encouraged if you ask me - to share there performances in a more accessible format.
I understand ur point and I agree that many musicians could profit off of more recognition but I for myself really enjoy synthesia videos. (they sometimes shoutout the pianist if based on real performance too btw) Im not a good sheet music reader and with synthesia i can better understand the chords and keys and modulations and themes or motifs. Especially with complex pieces like the medtner sonatas. They both deserve recognition
Getting millions of views means very little in terms of musical achievement or ability. It is more related to the UA-cam, Google and other search engines algorithms, click bait and curiosity than a measure of artistic merit. You can of course pay for high views too.
Capitalism aims to profit (reproduction of capital), not virtues :) But apparently, we can't think of a better way to organize ourselves, what a shame!
The best interpretation of my favourite Medtner sontata! This is incredible!

I think he earn a lot of money by a major label contract
Incroyable.
Medtner did for the piano what only Beethoven could do before. But no one followed Medtner afterwards.
Genial!!!
This is like Schumann sonata no. 2 but on the next level
Underrated piano sonata. I wanted to learn it and couldn't even find a score anywhere other than imslp
There are some old Dover editions you can find used sometimes.
@@jacksongrant15 I actually just bought a new copy of the Dover edition at the Juilliard store! Super exciting
@@alexandercarroll9707 nice. My favorite cycle is Milne.
@@jacksongrant15 What is Milne?
@@alexandercarroll9707 My favorite Medtner pianist on the whole
This is impossible. and it's been recorded.
