If mice are a problem get peppermint oil and put it on cotton balls where your food is stored. You may have to re apply to the cotton ball every 3-4 weeks.

I have what my kids called the "stinky closet". I sprayed the floor, under side of shelf, wood trim in & around the frame in that pantry with that mint spray. 5 yrs & it's still effective.😊

#1 don’t buy things that you don’t eat. Just because it’s cheap and has a long shelf life doesn’t mean you need to buy it if you aren’t going to eat it.
Only buy what you and your family will eat. Because it’s a waste of money that’s why.
#2 keep everything in containers that mice cannot get into if the food is not in a can already.
Also means airtight containers for cereal and other things.
Seal up all of your food, such as meat with a vacuum sealer.
You can find them pretty reasonable if that’s all you can afford.
Make sure you have a first aid kit in your house that is well stocked and one in each of the vehicles. You never know.
Water is another thing to stock up on.
Thank you Lisa for another great pantry video on how to get started.

Hi Leisa, even though I am not new to having a pantry, it's good to hear from you on what you're doing. We can always learn from others. I'm 65 years old and I'm still learning. I've canned or helped my mom can practically my whole life. I helped my father in the garden just as long. Sadly I lost them when I was a young adult. They had me late in life. But I still think of them often. I'm still canning applesauce, apple pie filling, and apple butter. And soon to dehydrate apple slices. My trees have produced a bumper crop of apples this year.

So...sitting here thinking about the last small batch of tomatoes I canned. Can't remember if I added lemon juice. So....reminding everyone to DATE jars. It saved me from tossing every jar I canned to avoid missing one that may or may not be acidic enough.

Flour: We finally just finished the flour we purchased in the beginning of 2020. I stored it on the garage shelf until it was opened, then it was put in the fridge. The flour did not smell rancid, but it did have a slight stale smell to it. Tasted fine once cooked.

Hi Leisa, having gone gluten free a number of years ago, I have learned how easy it is to teach yourself to use other things in place of flour. I never thought how I could use so many regular foods to bake and cook with i.e. oatmeal, rice, garbanzo beans, zucchini, as long as you can grind them down you have a substitute for flour. I love hearing your videos, it makes me feel like I am on the right path and sometimes get new ideas from them as well. I will always be grateful to you, because you are the person who taught me to can. I love being able to throw dinner together in a matter of minutes and it tastes like I have been cooking all day LOL.. Thanks again.

Oil: I just finished my last bottle of canola oil from 10\21 with no problem. (My garage gets to the mid 70's during summer.) Don't be in a hurry to throw things out, just smell/taste them first.

My top storage items are. Wheat berries, water, powder milk, thrive freeze dried meats and my canned meats, beans, freeze dried fruit and vegetables and oatmeal. I get my wheat berries, beans and potato flakes from LDS and bulk oatmeal from pleasant hill grains. I live in south Florida so I have to use a spare room with its own air conditioning for the storage

    Package Package Package!
I froze bread flour like I was supposed to and put it on the shelf. I also had rice that I had frozen on the same shelf. I kept them in the same bags because I was rotating through it. Ugh! I had weevils get into the flour somehow and just now discovered they got into the bags of rice as well. I have never!! I will put everything in buckets no matter what from here on out. I’ll also add some bay leaves.

Thanks for this Leisa and, as usual, loving your work! I don't store anything which lasts more than 2 or 3 years unless it is in a tin. Budget doesn't low for Mylar or gamma lids on my buckets but I'm doing OK. Thanks to you I went and checked the dates on my oil and I'm all good.👍 Hoping to get some canning done REALLY soon as we have a replacement gas cooker coming today. I need some things put of my freezer. I have my small garden harvest of tomatoes to turn into something, gherkins and onions sliced and ready to be made into pickles and some berries for jam. Looking forward to planning all of that.x

Those nasty pantry moths! We got some flax seed in the bulk section of the grocery store and it had pantry moths, that we didn’t realize and it has taken us forever to get rid of them! They have destroyed so many things! I never had seen these in my whole life!

My husband took the vacuum once again all along the tops of our crown molding & got at least 8 they love coming out at night time ,
I'm just beside myself as I'm so worried to lose more food, I had a great stock of food when things were still cheap , even aldis can goods were 49 cents, now I wipe everything down everywhere day .and using the food saver on everything , those things are horrible ,
We got 5 gallon food grade buckets at Lowes & even using them .
Also someone mentioned asking your Kroger or HEB or Sam's, Costco or anyplace you go if you can buy their big frosting buckets , u could b4 get them free not anymore , as they were using to garden ,but im gonna go check to save money as those buckets were $6 and extra for the lid.
God bless you ,does anyone know what I could use to spray ( healthy ) not strong bad odor to kill the moths that now can't get into my food but still flying around?
      God bless you all

In the interest of pantry nutrition, this is worth a look.
Cornell bread was invented in the United States during World War II by Clive McCay, a professor at Cornell University, as an inexpensive alternative to strictly rationed foods. Adding powdered milk and soy flour to bread increases its protein content, and restoring the germ to refined white flour results in higher levels of vitamins and minerals.
I’ve been making my own versions of Cornell bread, off and on, for a couple years. A search can turn up various recipes. Pick one, then make it your own. Nice to know if things go South.

I did ghee, and I forgot about it. You just reminded me that there is still a jar of it somewhere. It’s also really expensive compared to rendering the animal fat from the hog/steer that we already purchase.

I do also store wheat berries, I put them in a 5gal pail… that’s all you need to do once you’ve frozen/thawed/allowed to fully dry just like with milled flour

Thank you for answering my question. I have such a weird diet. No nuts, seeds, only certain veggies, 3 fresh fruits, it has to be canned so I dehydrate what veggies I can from my small garden. Basically a bunch of carbs which I’m trying to cut down on. Your videos are so enlightening to me. Thanks again

Hey! U mentioned 3 times not to use an oxygen absorbers in salt, sugar and something else because it will turn into a brick. Why does that happen? And I just realized is that why my homemade dishwasher detergent turned into a brick??? It was salt in it , anyone know?

    • @SuttonsDaze

I honestly never looked into why, just know it does

    • @KellyS_77

Salt and sugar absorb moisture. Oxygen absorbers work by the chemical reaction of the oxidation of iron. Iron reacts with oxygen to form a reaction produces rust and H2O (aka water) as a by product. Salt and sugar then absorb that water and clump up.
Salt or sugar kept in your kitchen will also clump if exposed to enough moisture.
As an aside, Morton salt adds a "flowing agent" that keeps their salt from absorbing moisture and clumping, hence their advertising phrase "When it rains, it pours." (the salt won't clump even if it's rainy or humid)
