If you have an "official" language then all communications with official organisations, law, tax, health etc can be done in that language and must be replied to in that language. My country, a British commonwealth country, has 3 official languages but some documents from the govt come printed in up to 8 or so languages commonly used in the country.

Bizarrely fun fact: In the Continental Congress, when things were being decided for the young nation, the question of "National Language" did come up. After the first few rounds of voting, Dutch and German were in the lead. There were some heated arguments behind closed doors, a few deals made, and then it was official that there would be NO official language. Gotta love old-time politics...

Apparently there was a campaign by some Cuban Hispanics to change it to Spanish. Naturally as we were both English we signed. We had a very nice holiday. My children then being quite young loved it.

In Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands speak Chamorro. Many Americans living in Eastern Texas and Louisiana speak Cajun. Large swaths of the southwest and west were once part of Mexico 180 years ago. States like Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Colorado, and Southern California. Many of the indigenous Mexicans living in these areas still speak Spanish. The reason that the US does not have an official language is because we are a country of immigrants.

Truth.. I have been saying this for years. Where I live, we have a lot of Portuguese, and majority of them speak the language. I have heard these people speak Portuguese to other people who speak it, or go to Portuguese owned bars, restaurants,etc and everyone is speaking it. You're wrong. The language of the United States is English. Our laws are based on English Common law. If that's the case, and it is, there are two constituent requisites for effect of law: de jure and defacto. English is not de jure but it **is** defacto.
Here's a proof thought: if I were a cop and I to you, "Freeze, don't reach for anything!" in Swahili, and then I shot you for reaching, would I be in serious trouble? The answer is hell yes. The "reasonable clause" would come into effect. It is reasonable that a cop should speak English. So, to sum up, English is the defacto language of the US, which also gives English priority and special status by law.

Canada is far from perfect because this shit still happens here....but it's not as prevalent.....i can walk down the street and hear 10 different languages being spoken.....Canadians respect cultures and languages and a majority of young Canadians tent to know catch phrases in multiple languages...not by choice, but because they have friends from multiple backgrounds....I'm Black, my wife is asian (Chinese), our closest friends stem from Trinidad, Pakistan, India, Columbia, Portugal, Korea, the Phillipines, Russia, Poland and Guyana. These are people who we've grown up with, live in our neighbourhoods and hang out with on a regular etc...in Canada we don't call black people African-Canadians, or Latin folks Hispanic-Canadian . We call them Canadian......America (USA) has a lot to learn, and unless you all realize that you've been brainwashed to believe that you're so inclusive and free, you'll never get out of this rut. Wake up people look at the rest of the world and you'll realize that America is not that great.

@tc tc hmmm Wales probably use their own language the most road signs etc, Scottish usually speak English with their own slang added in. Cornish just speak English buddy lol probably in older times they used a different dialect but its definitely English now. I get your point though we have a variety of languages but English is the common language we all use to communicate.
So I'll disagree with you there English is the language of England, Wales and Scotland are different regions.

This Karen should come to Switzerland, we have 4 national languages: german, italian, french and rumantsch, and everything is labeled in at least 3 languages, sometimes even in english - her brain would probably go in meltdown mode.... If you compare the size of my country versus yours, you could very well have several languages too. What happens with the languages of the native americans, are they still spoken and taught at school?
Dan thank you very much, I‘ve been curious about that for a long time! I think it is a pity, that the old languages are disappearing. Our rumantsch, that is only spoken in a small region in the mountains, is under federal protection, so it is slowly coming back. Otherwise it would have a great loss to our culture.

Well, in that area of the States, I believe that the local native language was Algonquin. I might be wrong, of course. Mohawk is a possibility, as well. However, it was NOT English.
