Top tip, lightly scrub corrosion on a pcb with isopropyl alcohol on a toothbrush and most of the time it'll come back and be good as new. Alcohol isn't conductive and dries itself away immediately so a lot of the times you can dissolve corrosion and return the wiring to how it should be on the pcb instead of it shorting everywhere through corrosion
That will clean the corrosion, and it may or may not fix any shorts he may have in the board, however if there is a continuity break it will not fix it and he will have to reflow the affected parts
Model magic works a lot better than playdoh for mods because it dries softer and doesn't shrink as much. I put it in all of my spacebars to deepen the sound.
Interesting follow up, I liked the video. The two thoughts I had after watching are first that you should use some isopropyl alcohol to clean up the corrosion on that PCB. It looked like you just taped over it. Secondly, instead of using something water based like play-doh I think it would have worked out better using an oil based modeling clay. Although modeling clay will generally still have salt so corrosion is a risk, it wouldn't have dried out like the play-doh did.
finally someone do "1 year after the mod" kinda hate who makes video about the mod but not mention about the consequence of the mod. then people just crazily do the same mod without knowing they are making their kb ded faster example about this issue is pe foam mod, it can truly rip the solder pcb really helpful video, Hipyo
To keep those stripes nice...put your painter's tape down...THEN SPRAY WITH CLEAR COAT. It'll give you some nice clean lines when you come back with the red :)
You should make a “sleeper keyboard” just use a really old case and old looking keycaps to make it look really bad, then make it a really nice mechanical keyboard
Hipyo, about 6 months ago I ran into you and Glarses channels and I was instantly intrigued. I thought that a custom keyboard couldn't be much better than the Corsair k65 I was using. But, man I was so wrong. Now I have three keyboards for different uses, all pre built, but all heavily modded with things you have shown. I think showing people how they can mod their keyboards is great, because we can take a key oard that's 80 bucks on Amazon, and turn it into something that sounds and feels better than a prebuilt keyboard that cost 300 bucks.
I feel like this might've worked better with regular wax-based plasticine; Mom kept a pair of figurines I made back in elementary school for more than 10 years and they never dried out, hardened or otherwise changed consistency. They got quite dirty because of dust accumulating on the surface, but that wouldn't be too big of an issue inside a keyboard.
Ah, just the anecdotal experience I was looking for. Recently filled up an MK Disco with plasticine after watching a Keybored video, and was curious how it would hold up after watching how bad the Play-Doh aged.
Hello Hipyo, I just wanna say I’m so thankful for you, when I found your channel roughly a year ago i was pretty depressed and just in a really bad place in my life but watching your content really helped me, plus you got me into the custom keyboard scene. So thanks again. You deserve so so so many more subscribers!
Try using proto-putty!!! The king of random has a great video on it: Mix some sealing silicone with food coloring, knead with cornstarch to make a play dough that will solidify into a rubber material.
If you are one who's ears enjoy that clicky sound then mod three is the way to go, sounding crisp and clean, with a touch of thock. Looking forward to listening to your singles on Spotify to prep for your debut. 🤜💥🤛
Question for the community. I have been watching numerous videos and I have been trying decide a great keyboard to start with that is full size. Ideally would prefer a metal case, and hot swappable for future building. What do you all recommend?
Right before this video was set to premier you hit 300k subscribers. I wonder how many you will hit in another year??? Merry Christmas, Hipyo! And btw, I submitted for partner ;)
if you end up trying this idea again, maybe try totally wrapping the play doh in plastic wrap in blobs, then try smooshing it in. Might last a lil longer than however less than a year THIS one lasted
If considering Tempest mod don't be tempted to use strong tape like Gorilla or thick Duck tape. I did and my pcb was trashed when it dried out a little and tore the components clean off the board.
Why didn't you use alcohol to clean some of the corrosion on the board? Honestly curious if the board goes bad later if it could be prevented by simple cleaning swab and some 91 rubbing alcohol.
Hey hipyo! So basically to get the rgbs to start working again rub the pcb you can see through the space bar with isopropyl alcohol and boom starts working again
I can't believe its a year since the first video! Also my favorite Christmas treat is pecan pie. Idk if its meant for Christmas but I eat it every year during Christmas so. If that doesn't count then candy canes. I used to purposely break the ones on the tree so I could eat them.

+1 yeess i definitely thought he was going to clean the corrosion off to give it the best shot of working
That will clean the corrosion, and it may or may not fix any shorts he may have in the board, however if there is a continuity break it will not fix it and he will have to reflow the affected parts

scrolled down to comment this and saw ya already did lol
me after hours of odd tinkering viewing
Found this video when I was about to put play doh in my keyboard
DONT, TRUST ME!
Do it.

Does it reduce the hollowness?
@@tommygolding6435 definitely does for me
I used plastercine because it is oil based and won't dry up

the clay is actually a really good idea
I love how his reasoning for not eating the play-doh wasn't the fact that it's PLAY-DOH, but the fact that there is--salt--on it.

There are always a bunch of vintage mechanicals being sold on ebay in the classic beige, white, and light gray color schemes.
I just built my first ever custom keyboard, thank you for inspiring me and making the lockdown more enjoyable.
Where do you live that you’re on lockdown?

I just ordered the parts to my first custom keyboard and your videos helped me decide! thanks man😁
Congrats bro
I would love to see a studio tour. From what I've seen in the community posts it looks very nice
If you ever do want to recover the LEDs, you can scrub the PCB with isopropyl alchohol and it should hopefully clean it enough to bring it to life.
Howdy hey, congrats on 300k!
I would love to see you do a Blu-Tac filled (hipyo-TAC) board and see the outcome of that.
You could also make it blue to match the theme
Maybe pour the two-part molding silicon in a board case. That would make it less hollow without the chance of drying out.
5:47 "let me guys know if you want to see that" I nearly didn't catch that mistake it sounded so natural lol
Congrats on 300k Hipyo!
How do you not have atleast 1 million subscribers? Your content is one of the best i have seen from any keyboard youtuber. Much love from Sweden
Ayy same
Hippo tech: playdoh has a very high salt content
Me: so that’s why it tastes so salty
DIY was the reason I subscribed to you. Loved the video and glad about it coming back

Found your channel as I’m looking to get into the world of keyboards after building my first Pc as well. Love the content so far!❤
Oh my god I subbed when this video rolled around, holy crap it’s been a year?!

Favorite holiday snack is play-doh
Would love to see more DYI! It’s a lot of fun to to watch
Same, I really love DYI videos
4 and a half thousand people have had their play-doh explode.. let's have a moment of silence for our brave soldiers
Yesss! Studio tour!!
4:20 this is absolutely insane (before premier btw
i used plumbers putty as an alternative and it worked pretty well without solidifying
sick content man, can't wait for the ground tour
Studio tour please! Congrats on 300k and Merry Christmas!
Pilyo Foam mod
Edit: Ferrero Rocher best holiday snack
I hope you hit 500k soon
Best wishes
If you clean off the corrosion it might work again. Love the way this board looks and foam mod is the best mod.

i used air-drying modelling clay a few months ago it still does what it should do my cheap mechanical keyboard sounds much nicer and less hollow
Thanks for the info, I was getting prepared to install a thick layer of blue playdoh onto my $300 keyboard but now I won’t because of you
yes please do a hour / studio tour cant wait for more content and what u can achieve in 2022!
the TEASER for the song 👀👌🏻
4:55 I died laughing. this was literally what was on my mind.
I can't believe I sat and watched 4.5 minutes of this!
The candy cane keyboard should become a yearly tradition.
Hipyo: what am I doing with this tape?
Me: tempest tape mod
Studio tour!! 👍🏼
You might get better results with plastacine clay, its oil based and doesn't dry out and you can get it at any art store
Right before this video was set to premier you hit 300k subscribers. I wonder how many you will hit in another year??? Merry Christmas, Hipyo! And btw, I submitted for partner ;)
It didn’t even premiere yet, Merry Christmas though!
Play doh doesnt't explode if it goes bad, it just gets hard and crispy
just a tip from a full time painter. use frog tape not scotch tape it fully seals so no paint bleeds thru.
Studio tour? That sounds great!
Studio tour please! Ty Mr. Hipyo Rock Climbing Man
when I saw this video title i knew you already were a legend
Thanks for the help,I was thinking about putting play doh in my keyboard 🙏🙏🙏

i remember that video where he made that candy cane keyboard honestly it dosent even feel like that long ago it feels like i watched it a week ago
What if you made play doh keycaps. With ingraved letters. Edit: make sure to bake the caps
Use crayola modeling clay like play doh but drys out into a foam clay almost
What if you wanted it to be annoying loud? Not via clicky switches, but just to increase the volume of a linear switch as much as you could?
I like all the chocolate peppermint stuff. And the limited peppermint ice cream.
Please do a studio tour that would be awesome!
I didn't realize the scuffs until you did a close up
5:49 “let me guys know if you want to see that” .. does play doh have harmful fumes mr. hipyo
Not a significant difference in sound between the dry playdoh and the shredded memory foam/tape mod?
My favorite holiday snack is fudge 100%
do you recommend any better keyboard than razer huntsman te or i should build one ?( my budget is 500$) and really need help
