Man, I really loved learning this little backstory from you - that wall of games behind you really illustrates how the gaming industry isn’t what you do as much as it defines who you are

watching an artist I admire admiring and shouting out to other artist I admire always fill me with me a sense of happiness. It's great to see all of you being friendly with one another.

The first game for me was Soul Calibur that really got me into art. Always loved drawing nightmare and yoshimitsu on my spare time. Loved the medieval and esoteric aspect of the game. But of course later in life the world tells you, you need to be this and that in order to be successful, and that kinda brought me into a spiral of confusion with myself and what I wanted out of life. Ended up doing ton of different jobs that didn't resonate with me. Currently running a little business to keep myself afloat, but started getting back into art and realized that I should no longer deny the creative part of myself, as that would be the thing that brings in the flow and happiness I search for in my life. Btw, recently finished ff7 remake, that shit made me tear up man T.T Are you team Tifa or team Aerith? Im team Aerith :D

Yes! When I played 'The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind,' I was in the middle of pursuing my degree in software engineering. However, it inspired me so much that I began learning 3D art, marking the start of my journey as a 3D artist.

Man, in lockdown I played God of War 2018. It inspired me to learn 3D and 6 months later I was in the industry. It has changed me life, and its the first time I feel like I have direction as an artist. Recently left my studio to pursue character art, as stressful as it is, I love this industry, and I feel like I belong for the first time. Loved this!

One of the endings of Nier Automata inspired me so much and allowed me to take a very different path. Thanks to that I was able to discover my passion. Thank you for sharing your experiences. I really appreciate these videos!

Xenogears being my personal favorite game still to this day, I've definitely noticed the figures behind you even when they're out of focus lol. I have the Weltall and Weltall-ID myself! And a copy of Perfect Works, too! I particularly love Kunihiko Tanaka's style from the Xenogears/Ruin Explorers era. But I think the game that I'd credit most for giving me that 'spark' to become an artist was Rival Schools. I loved the art from all of Capcom's games from the PS1 era, but the loading screens in Rival Schools had a lot of very rough, sketchy concept art that I think started to break down the barrier of my perception. "Oh, this isn't just a piece of art - somebody MADE this piece of art, and there was a process before it became the clean version they put on the boxes!"
I was similar to you in that I was captivated by the art and worlds from these games, but for some reason as a kid I had a very fixed mindset (and ADHD, which I've only been diagnosed with recently, but I think it definitely contributed to my lack of patience with myself/the process). Even though I'd always ask my mom to get me those "How to Draw Anime" books, I just really couldn't imagine you could actually *become* skilled if you weren't already. I didn't really get into drawing until a fateful encounter at the end of my senior year in high school with "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" sitting on my English teacher's bookshelf. I silently stole it after I did the "miraculous" first exercise lol, but she eventually noticed and knew exactly who to ask if they'd seen it...But she was nice about it since I was essentially the teacher's pet 🤣

My first videogames which inspired my crearive vain where warcraft 3 and age of mythology. I still remember drawing ogres and other creatures in my school folders and thinking about new units etc.. But the first time i think i actually found out about the whole concept art thing was with the collectors edition of starcraft 2 HotS. It had this artbook inside, which just blew me away, but as you said, it was something i really never saw as possible career option, until recently, when i decided to seriously work at my art skills and see where this will take me in the future.

Hey Tyler. First of all, thank you for sharing such a personal aspect of your artistic journey. It is lovely to hear you talk about things you are so passionate about.
My own "I want to do this" moment was when I watched the making of of Silent Hill 2. I was already in love with the series, but when I saw the mindset behind the creation of these titles I could not help but admire the devs' creativity. There have been plenty of other influences before and after, but nothing quite hit the spot like SH did.

Your video was very informative, and that's true I have inside creator thoughts just need to find and learn the way to get there.
Thanks and grettings from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷.

Yea man ff7 was really insane for its time. I was 2 when it came out and didnt play the OG until much but i watched my uncle play ff8 and later i played 9 and 10. But when kingdom hearts 1 came out and cloud was in it i was like who is this guy!? Became obsessed and then the advent children movie came out not long afterwards. Sqaure soft/enix really influenced me into becoming an artist along with naruto and lord of rings

The single videogame that planted the seed of desire for worldbulding is Dark Souls. It's story and lore are amazing and keep fascinating me. It's majestic, obscure, dark, sad, ancient, funny, grotesque and forces you to think for a bit and wonder about the fate of that world and characters. And second, much more recent is Elden Ring and it's open world full of lore and mysteries (by the way I think that Elden Ring is the best game ever made, doesn't mean everyone has to (or will) like it). Both of these games realy resonate with me almost perfectly.

I think I must be the same age as you as FFVII came out when I was 13-14 as well. I've had the Cosmo Canyon song stuck in my head, on and off, for just shy of 30 years now.

I really was transported even with the art on nes cartriges like Ninja Gaiden or Startropics (was startropics nes or snes?) s spent a lot of time looking at it. I did the same with the booklets of playstation games. I remember enjoying the character design in Bloody Roar lol? I used to create make believe games based on the ones I played. I made them 1 sheet games with selectable characters and abilities and all and I would play with my friends outside, fighting invisible enemies.
I haven’t played FF7. I played some jrpgs but my brother played a lot of it and I would watch the stories unfold and ask a lot of questions. In high schools we were creating TTRPGs based on our inspirations. I made a game called Meteor which was massively inspired by FF7, old school shadowrun and dragonball Z! We played so much of this :D
When my father got his first computer with real CDs I remember starting playing Mechwarriors, Z (steel soldiers) and Red Alert. This is where i fell in love with the RTS genre in big part because of the visuals. Green tanks fighting purple tanks with different and coherent faction aesthetics is really appealing to me lol
I make art as a hobby today and I cannot not do it. It would hurt me to stop. And I always had gamer shame because it was not well seen where I come from and all the reasons anyone reading this could imagine. Today I feel better about it because any problems that I could’ve had were not coming from gaming. While I understand that anything done too much can be unhealthy, I can say that gaming was my escape and it helped me get through a lot of things. Masking some negative emotions? Absolutely lol but Today I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
It’s part of me. And maybe who knows one day I might be part of it too!

Our life right now parallels the world of FF7. A huge industrial company threatens the balance of the world of FF7. Here in our world the "industrialization"(AI) of everything threatens everyone.

you are quite lucky....I think this generation have a much narrow and lesser chance to get into the industry, for we have to compete in such...things
