Just some of them were used with optical sights. The first such rifle was Mexican Fusil Mondragon. Nothing common with the purposefully designed DMR in every squad. Just two mass production semi-auto rifles, several % of them equipped with optical sights.

      @Lone Ranger Ok, Mauser 98 had a scoped version in 1915. It was not semi-auto, but it is not a must for DMR. Wikipedia: the SVD was the first rifle designed from the outset as what is now known as a designated marksman rifle.

    Gold content as always! I have actually had some experience with type 85 in PLA sniper team. First, the rifle I put my hands on was really beaten up. The finish was all gone and I have no idea how many rounds were shot through that specific rifle. Second, there is no real 'Sniper grade ammunition' available to type 85 platform. Sniper team that was equipped with type 85s only shoot general purpose machine gun 54r ammo through type 85. Third, it was a standard procedure that snipers have to take off their scopes and store them separately every time after shooting. Thus, the type 85 that produces 3-4 MOA groups at 100m was not really effective as a true sniper rifle. I have to say the svd is a fantastic system, but it needs systemic sniper equipment and sniper concept to perform well in its role.

    Definitely one of the best videos by you guys so far. It makes so cry that we can't get the superb Norinco SVD rifles into the U.S. anymore. I'd give my left nut for one of these if I could afford one today. I kick myself for not buying one back in the 90's when they were available and reasonably priced. But thank God I at least bought a Norinco SKS rifle. I love that rifle SO much. After three decades of very rough use (hunting and target shooting out in the field) and thousands of rounds, I have not had a single part failure. I baby it now that their prices are skyrocketing though. Sad that I can't even find spare parts for reasonable prices. :( I hate Trump, but I would vote for him if he ended the stupid ban on imported Norinco rifles.

    My favorite war rifle.. I always have to tell everybody how I opened a crate of genuine, unissued Russian SVD's, cleaned them off the cosmoline and roughly zeroed them at 300m.. That was back in -96 during my service in the FDF.. They had the untouched battery packages and all. Eventually I got to shoot them quite a lot as I was trained as a sniper/DMR. We shot the 200gr D166 out of them and the gas regulator for the inertia piston was set up for Russian 152gr sniper steel core ball so the recoil was manly. everybody loved them Dragunovs.. The new SVDM version has a shorter, thicker barrel to help with the wandering issues you can have after a couple of mags, i think they changed the twist ratio as well, max popenker spoke about it on a forgotten weapons video recently. I do recall one of the faxon barrels people say that wandering issues with barrels are mostly due to the type of heat treatment that a factory uses, but i guess its cheaper for izhmash to make the barrels thicker than to get an entire new line of heat treating machines that use a different type of technology.
    Ive seen a modified european svd in 300 win mag using svdk 9.3 mags, i wish they made them like that from the factory as well, or maybe in 300 norma magnum!

    Most commercial .308 loads and even standard 7.62x51 NATO ball has nearly identical drop and flight path as light ball 7.62x54. In a side by side, the .308 is a slightly better cartridge in that it's a .308 instead of a .312. A .308 of the same weight as a .312 will tend to conserve velocity a bit better and have just slightly better flight characteristics at range due to better ballistic coefficient. The .308 also burns powder more efficiently which tends to produce slightly better accuracy due to a more even and efficient powder burn during ignition. Same effect you see with the super short magnums as compared to traditional magnum cartridges: more efficient powder burn in a wider case allows for more consistent and efficient burn rate and therefore more consistent acceleration before the bullet leaves the barrel: which also increases consistency of flight path - which is otherwise referred to as "accuracy".
    With well made ammunition and two equally as well made guns the differences between .308'7.63 NATO and 7.62x54 R is too nominal for most shooters to experience: because those differences in cartridge case design and ballistic coefficient won't readily make determinable differentiations unless you're stretching the cartridge to long ranges where fractional differences become measurable results. With a pair of stock Remington 700s, one in .308 and one in 7.62x54 R: a shooter probably won't be able to see differences in accuracy at 100 yards, assuming 1) there's no psychosomatic bias of knowing which gun is which caliber and 2) both guns are loaded with equally well manufactured ammunition. At 1,000 yards, however, the differences would become plainly evident because at that distance: the differences would become measurable beyond standard deviation.
    Just a few of those complex and often highly misunderstood concepts of long range and or precision shooting.

      There’s one fatal flaw in your analysis, you don’t take into account that 7.62x54R has a larger case capacity and thus can carry more powder giving it better performance.

    • @ObservingLibertarian
      @ObservingLibertarian 5 років тому

      @@Mkvine "thus can carry more powder giving it better performance." -
      Were it true. In reality, however, it doesn't have better performance. 7.62 NATO will drop less at 1,000 yards than 7.62x54R.

    • @ObservingLibertarian
      @ObservingLibertarian 5 років тому +1

      @@Mkvine Yeah, and if I put extra powder in a .38 special I can turn it into a .357 magnum: if we're talking about uploading a charge then we're not talking about a caliber made to spec. If you took the 7.62x54R and 7.62x51 and uploaded both by the same measure the 7.62 NATO would still out perform the 7.62x54 at 1,000 yards because it has a better ballistic coefficient.
      For future references - I don't own a .308: I own a VEPR in 7.62x54R, I like the cartridge, I like it's flight pattern and I like it's cost of ammunition more than anything else. I have a case of 880 rounds of Russian surplus sitting in this very computer room right this very second as I type this. Just because I like the cartridge doesn't mean I'm going to pretend reality isn't what it is.
      Also, btw, the Dragunov *is* my favorite Rifle of all time and the reason I have a VEPR and not a dragunov is because I don't have $8k+ disposable income to have an SVD Dragunov - otherwise I would.

    Good afternoon, I suggest from the observation that you support the Dragunov more at the outlet of the pipe, so you will have less margin of error when impacting at greater distances. As for the ammunition and reload it is known that 7.62 x 51 mms is not the same as the .308 Winchester ... it is always thrown with the same weight in grains at points, and I use Speer Rode-nose.303 " British in me Mauser model 1909 Argentino, what varies are the refills in grains of gunpowder A-27., Max. 46.7 and minimum 40.2, 42 grns. to hunt, and with an optics of 6x or 8x equal to the binoculars Carl Zeiss Jena. My original tips are Spitzer 220 grns. and they are not achieved, so I use those of the English Mauser MK-4., 303 British 180 grains., the best brands Speer and Sierra Pro-Hunter., The optics of the Dragunov are missing increases (xs), as one gets older, the view diminishes, it is inevitable, I practiced pulling at about 650 yds, with winds of 35 miles, lateral, best regards Denis Morend and good impacts.

    By the way, as the conflict in Ukraine has shown, the most ammoused by the SVD ist 7N13, 7N14 , 7N26 and 7N36 is used the most. 7N1 istn't that common or is used that much, as far as I heard. And yes you are right, they are all in between 9-10g ( 140-150grain). The twist 1:320 mm is used in the civillian "TIGRE"-SVD Version as in the SV-98 sniper Rifle. So it's interessting, if 7N1 with a mass of 9,8g (about 152gr) is realy used not that much, what the 1:240mm twist is optimized for (analog to the Mosin Nagant 1891/1930). Also the successor of the SVD, the SVCh (Snaiperskaya Vintovka Chukavena) hat the same twist of 1:240mm in 7,62x54R and 1:320mm in .308.
    And please, the SVD was designed as a sniper rifle! Not a DMR. DMR is a definition from the USA, that came over 30 Years after the SVD was developed and deployed. A DMR by your US definition today, is something different. Not totally different, but different. The DMR by western definition was not a .300 calibre..it was always a kind of tuned , standard rifle variant till the late 2000s. SVD is a Sniper rifle.
