    Still one of my favorite races to this day. And one of the best calls.

    One of the best darn race calls ever:

    I really admired Winning Colors. She was the real deal. In all three Triple Crown races she was a force to be reckoned with. She certainly had the speed, the stamina, and the toughness to compete with "the boys" and show them a thing or too. I don't know if any other fillies have raced in all three TC races but she had the physical conditioning and stamina to do so and make a good showing. That is something "the boys" of today don't have. .

    Even after all these years this was a tough one. The pinheads kept waiting for the filly to back up...she didn't. Eddie screwed up on Risen Star, who went on to win the Preakness & Belmont...Could've been the crown for Risen Star. Pat wait all Day, pulled his usual, costing 49er the possible win..…
    Then, WC gets bullied, mugged and beat in the Preakness. That's horse racing folks.

    Winning Colors was a bad-ass racehorse. She always went right to the front, and dared the other horses to catch her. She was the filly version of Dr. Fager. Lots of speed, but completely maxed out at a mile and a quarter.

    Risen Star couldn't overcome a jockey change that occurred just prior to the Derby, and the resulting unfamiliar ride by Eddie D. Had Dellahousaye known what he was sitting on, the twelveth Triple Crown winner would have occurred in 1988.

    Risen Star was forced SIX-wide at the final turn near the back of the pack and finished a closing 3rd! What could have been if he was a little closer to the leaders.

    Genuine Risk, in 1980, was in the top three of all three TC races. She should have won the Preakness, but there were foul issues. She was first in the Derby, second in the Preakness and Belmont. Of the fillies, and strictly in terms of placement, she had the best record.

  • @btoups1
    @btoups1 11 років тому +8

    Risen Star should have won this race. Unfortunately, Delahoussaye had him so wide on the far turn that he just couldn't overcome the deficit quickly enough. Is there any doubt that Risen Star was by far the best three-year-old that year?

    • @1031E
      @1031E 2 роки тому +2

      Well no there wasn't. Risen Star ran by them like they were standing still in the Preakness and in the Belmont he looked a lot like his daddy.

    Tough luck for Risen Star and Forty Niner, but that should not negate the brilliant win by the filly Winning Colors.

  • @bg147
    @bg147 13 років тому +1

    Risen Star sat in the garden spot in the Preakness, Winning Colors had to press from the outside, gets taken wide, and she still fought like a tiger through the Pimlico stretch. If Risen Star hooks Winning Colors in the Derby, he gets smoked. That being said, Risen Star was a great horse. If another horse hooked Winning Colors in the Derby, Risen Star would have had a big shot.

  • @bbmtge

    Yes!!! Delahousse (spelling) admitted that it was his fault. He waited too long to make his move. Most of the fied was off the pace thinking that WC would burn out. did not happen. A truly legitimate shot at the TC. His Belmont was fantastic in that it looked like he wasn't even trying.

    I can't believe that the keep Risen Star so far back. If he was with the front runner he would have won the Triple Crown like this daddy....the great Secretariat. I heard the jockey told the trainer after the race that he is training the horse wrong and he need to be up front. After that...we all know what he did in the Preakness and Belmont stakes.

  • @kylestephens4133
    @kylestephens4133 4 роки тому +2

    Too bad Secretariat's boy, Risen Star, didn't have his usual jockey. Doesn't take away from Winning Colors' great win, but we probably would've had a TC winner that year.

    • @robinalford2186
      @robinalford2186 4 роки тому +4

      The right jockey can make all the difference in a winner. It even took a few races for Ron Turcott and Secretariat to get to know each other. And he let him run his own race in the Belmont and Secretariat ran the most fantastic race in thoroughbred history. No horse was able to copy that race, not even Risen Star. Even though he came a close second.

    This is a perfect example of the best horse not winning the Ky Derby. Risen Star was several lengths better than these but when you have a field of 20 things can happen and they did. Risen Star was blocked and had to take up and he was forced wide turning for home. Its a shame. When he got a clear run in the Preakness he ran by the leaders like they were tied to a post and in the Belmont just destroyed the field and won by what looked to be 15 lengths and ran the second fastest Belmont ever at the time.

    I was there that day, so let me tell you something: Pat Day BLEW IT. Woody was fit to be tied. Pat wanted to win it at the wire {that was his trade mark}, but Woody told him to be up front going into the front stretch {not six or seven lengths back, like he was}. Forty Niner should have been wearing the roses that day.

      Winning Colors did hook Risen Star in the Preakness and he ran by her
      like she was tied to a post. It's really a shame that Eddie D had him near the back. If Risen Star is in a stalking position like he should have been he's a triple crown winner.
