- It has been more than three years since Knaus presented its first MAN-based semi-integrated vehicle, the Van TI Plus. For example, the company added an alternative chassis to its Van TI series, which until then had been based solely on the Fiat Ducato. Now, for the new season, the brand from the Bavarian Forest is adding another model to its MAN fleet, the Knaus Van TI MAN 640 MEG.
The rear single bed layout is also available as the 650 MEG model in the well-known Van TI Plus range - so why do we need the new 640? With a length of 6.89 meters, the new one is about ten centimeters shorter. This is ensured by a new type of rear wall construction, called "FoldXPand", which has already been introduced with the Van TI on Ducato. Smart integration of the rear light carrier in the rear wall saves ten centimeters of vehicle length without compromising on living space.
The so-called "FoldXPand" rear panel skilfully integrates the lamp holder into the rear wall.
Another difference can be seen in the vehicle height, which is 2.87 meters for the newcomer and thus three centimeters lower than for the Plus counterpart. The reason is the chassis variant used. While the Van TI Plus relies on the ladder frame, giving the buyer the four-wheel drive option, the Van TI MAN uses the flat frame, which is always front-wheel drive.
The interior of the vehicle is dignified and neat, which is not least due to the choice of surface decor. The white furniture flaps form a nice contrast with the rather dark wood decor of the furniture bodies. The play of light and dark is also repeated in the upholstery of the L-shaped seating group. In general, the new Knaus model is light and friendly, which is also due to the large window areas. You already know the Skyroof skylight above the seating group, but in the new 640 you will find an impressive equivalent in the bedroom (122 x 38 cm) - which, however, costs 515 euros extra.
The single beds with optional star view are comfortably furnished and well proportioned with cold foam mattresses, slatted bases and lengths of 1.98 and 2.00 meters. If necessary, the lying surface can be expanded with two additional mattress pieces in the middle. There are three wall cabinets and three large shelves for storing bedtime reading and other things. Clothes find their way to the two illuminated wardrobes under the bed ends, which together have a capacity of about 600 liters. However, there is no eye-level wardrobe.
80 centimeters of headroom in the rear bed is sufficient. It becomes even more beautiful with the optional skylight.
In addition to the two side windows and the skylight, two reading spots and an indirect light strip at the head end provide sufficient light if needed.
Several light switches with pictograms as well as a 230 volt socket and a USB socket where mobile phones and the like can be charged.
In the bathroom, as with other TI series, Knaus relies on a swivel mechanism where the washbasin wall is turned 90 degrees towards the toilet. This way you can create a shower cubicle in no time. There are deductions here for the annoying wheel arch, which limits the floor space. Another downside is the lack of a power connection for, for example, an electric toothbrush or hair dryer. The other equipment is pleasing: drying bar on the ceiling, toilet roll holder, coat hooks and two large mirrors are present. Fresh air comes through the roof hatch. The bench toilet has ample legroom. There are three large shelves protected by clattering edges and a cabinet with more compartments next to them. Advantage of the bathroom door with slats: You can leave it open without it getting in the way.
The swiveling washbasin wall quickly makes way for the shower.
The kitchen has a uniform appearance because the front panel of the 142-litre absorption refrigerator has the same decor as the usual fronts. Cooking is done on two gas burners with electric ignition. The pleasure of cooking is somewhat curbed by the lack of workspace for chopping and preparing. The hinged storage shelf at the entrance does little to change that. The sink is sufficiently dimensioned together with the tap with high spout. However, the diameter of the bowl is barely sufficient for large pans and pots - but they also do not fit on the hob. But the kitchen with its three drawers, spice rack on the side and wall cupboard is big enough to feed two people.
The L-sofa invites you to linger.
It is also noted that the new 640 now has a wide gas box door, behind which two 11-kilo bottles are next to each other, which can be exchanged independently of each other. The Knaus-typical stock compartment on the left, which combines the power connection, tank access and drain valves, is again pleasing. The more powerful Truma Combi 6 is already standard
