    Where to Watch
Penguin Highway was released in Japan on August 17 2018 and has been aired at several festivals throughout the year. I was fortunate enough to see it on October 13th at the Scotland Loves Anime Film Festival.
It is due for Rest of the World release in 2019, date to be specified.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    Movie Description
Schoolboy Aoyama is bright, inquisitive and a bit headstrong. He has a lot of brainwork to get busy with - after all, he'll be an adult in just a few thousand days. For the moment, though, he'll have to live life as a fourth-grader. Not that it's a bad life.
Summer has arrived and school's nearly out. He has a crush on an intriguing older woman he's met at his dentist's office, who's coaching him in his chess game. And a colony of penguins has materialized in the middle of Aoyama's sleepy little town. Where on Earth - or elsewhere - did these waddling interlopers come from? Aoyama and his friends embark on a research mission, applying rigorous scientific methods and principles. Their discoveries, however, only lead to ever more puzzling wonders...

I got to see this anime as well at the Crunchyroll Expo in California. It is as good as you say. This anime immediately became a favorite of mine. It is so surreal and funny.

This movie has the goal to confront adult viewers with their lack of imagination. Just like the little boy we try to search for answers trough out the whole 150 min movie. At the end we understand that the whole penguin mistery could not be solved trough rational facts and science. Instead we have to accept things as they are and use our imagination - just like Onee-san did.

And it'll definitely be one heck of a super power to be able to turn objects into penguins. Especially ones that are alive and waddling.

I'm feel so relieved after I watched your review. Yes, we're in the age that we often desperately finding for an answer, yet this animation will more likely to gives you more question marks; however, if you see yourself as the kid in the film, there're infinity answers of that. That really give me a complete new point of view seeing from a kid's perspective. Thank you for the great review :)

Whoa. After being interested in watching this movie, I stumbled upon this review. And on this video alone I'm considering subscribing.
This is such a well-produced review. Your writing, editing (and occasional link between the two), the fantastic music tied to it, the way you so easily describe the synopsis to pull me in and also voice your thoughts and opinions on the matter, and all within the span of 5 minutes... It's made my jaw drop.
I'm gonna watch this movie, and I'm gonna watch out for your content.

@@IslaMcTear Well, it's official. Penguin Highway is going to be distributed across theatres in the U.S. and Canada starting in April. That's a relief since I've had no luck thus far tracking the film down, just waiting and hoping it'd get picked up for DVD.

I really love this short and sweet video. I especially loved it when you said, "Aoyama is so desperate to grow up, but watching this film, I was desperate to go back." That really hit me. Although this film didn't make sense in the slightest, I think that was the point. That life is sporadic, unpredictable, but beautiful in its own way. It gives you all these different colors, moods, and strange characters that only show that life is so surprising sometimes. Life doesn't make sense and perhaps it never will. But when you see Aoyama trying to make sense of everything, it only gets more confusing. I think that teaches us to kind of let go of logic for a little bit and be ourselves. Kids have such imaginative minds and they see the world in a different way than adults do. It's kind of sad they lose that spark in their eyes as they get older. So, I think this movie reminds you to never lose that inner child. The inner child that questioned everything, thought anything was possible, and loved trying new things. As adults, we should still continue to have that mindset and be excited about everything just like children are. It makes life worth living! We should learn to embrace our childish side and never forget the things that make us who we are. I also love that the lady, although she is the dentist's wife, still has an adventurous and immature side to her. It makes the movie more fun and it makes her more mysterious. The movie just absolutely comes alive with the art and the penguins!! It makes you laugh and it's pretty whimsical. It shows that not everything has to make sense all the time so go be that inner child and just explore! :D

Just came back from the movie, absolutely adore it! Though I've already read the original novel cuz I'm a huge Morimi fan, this film still impressed me in the most impressionable way. Also, a nice vid this is! I love how you wrap up the essence of the story in tender words, that's some enjoyable writing. Hope to see more vids uploaded, keep on going !

I got here after taking a fall thru a Tumblr rabbit hole. I'm so glad I watched this.
This review was so amazing. I have terrible anxiety that keeps me from specifying the numerous reasons for my opinion like so many other comments have spent time doing. You are so very good at your craft! I'm def subscribing to your channel and look forward to listening to other reviews. If I can better explain why it is I think you touched such a good nerve, I certainly will. I feel like the reward receptors in my brain were getting tweaked simultaneously while listening to you talk about Penguin Highway. It must sound a little nutty to hear someone say this about a review. I'll try better to elaborate at some point. But thanks for this. I'm also def going to watch this movie. Letting go of my adult limitations is EXACTLY what I need right now. Anxiety is the closest thing I can think of to physical pain. It's so demoralizing and paralysing. And then when it's gone, it's hard to believe it was even there, or understand why it was so devastating. It's just so brutal. I hate that I can't think straight and I can't function. I've got this Rolodex in my head that keeps fluttering thru images over and over again every time I try to sleep or relax. I'm going to give this movie a try.

3:11 Jesus. THIS is how you do CGI in anime. Regardless of whether or not you like the movie, Man of Steel had amazing CGI coupled with cinematography (I love Man of steel's DP). Rewatched those 8 seconds just now 5 times. This is Man of Steel CGI/Cine.
Great script on this video, but yeah, I don't care about the story of this movie at all. I'll watch it just for THIS scene. Thanks again for the recommendation.

Kobuchizawa Shirase would have a heart attack watching this. ;) Also, Studio Colorido is the studio famous for the McDonalds Yuri ads and as a studio made up of mostly younger people, who are dedicated to fostering a positive work week/environment for their animators! So please support them, and wonderful review as always, Isla.
