Great review, Brian! This is my most anticipated film of the year, adored both Weekend and Looking, both profound pieces of work. I've always loved Andrew Scott in everything I've seen him in, particularly Handsome Devil which he was really good in. I didn't expect this film to have creative twists, which has me even more excited to see this. I presume the Willie Nelson version of Always On My Mind is in this over the Pet Shop Boys version? So excited to see this at the New York Film Festival and I expect this to at least win Outstanding Film - Wide or Limited Release at the GLAAD Media Awards next year. Thank you, Brian ❤

Apart from Weekend and 45 Years, both of which I loved, Haigh also directed two episodes on one of my favorite series ever: The OA! 🥰
Loved Scott in that Black Mirror episode, that Modern Love episode and in Handsome Devil, and absolutely adored him in Fleabag.
And if it was up to me, Mescal would have gotten that Oscar for his absolutely beautiful and devastating performance in Aftersun.
Plenty of reasons to watch this film, I reckon. 🎉

Having loved Weekend, I could see some similarities in this film. The intimacy and dialogue felt so real - almost documentary-like. And both films had looking-out-the-window scenes, a trademark of Haigh. I thought Jamie Bell delivered a terrific performance - and wasn't a weak link in the cast. Get out your hankies, folks.

I'm so glad this is looking like it will be Andrew Haigh's most prolific film so far. I too fell in love with Weekend and subsequently adored 45 Years and Lean on Pete. He understands the importance of subtlety and intricacies of human emotions so well and it's time the world started paying attention. I hope this film will give him more opportunities to continue making great films with even higher budgets.

I've only known Paul Mescal since Aftersun. I thought the Oscar nom was so well deserved for such a young and unknown but incredibly talented actor. And, I think he just became my one and only screen crush in a long time. So, when I heard you said he's so damn sexy in this new Andrew Haigh's surrealist gay romantic drama gem with THE Hot Priest, Andrew Scott, my body just got filled up with excitement. Like, "any gay man in the world would come around to wanting to spend time with Paul Mescal in his apartment" is one of the most relatable statements I've heard, lol. Other than that, the light spoiler in your review actually hyped me up a bit more.

I watched the film at NYFF two days ago after working the entire day so I was a bit tired. I'll admit the first 20 mins was a blur to me as I was trying to figure out what the heck was happening. I'm a fan of Andrew Haigh's previous work so I had high expectations and similar to you, they were all met. I actually didn't recognize Jamie Bell in the film until after when I saw his name in the credits but that father/son scene was quite powerful. I agree @13:05 on how they used that song. @15:09 I agree. Andrew Haigh did a talkback after the movie with editor Jonathan Alberts and both were quite entertaining. The childhood home setting was the real childhood home of Andrew Haigh!

I so agree. That movie just blindsided me. And the music was especially perfect- "The Power of Love" at the end... omg. Was sick that it received no Oscar nominations. Most definitely Andrew Scott deserved a Best Actor nod. And, yep, Jamie Bell sadly lacked the gravitas for that role. The movie was spectacular and I'm still thinking about it.

Thanks for this review! I’ve watched some reviews of this film on UA-cam but I agree with yours the most! I LOVE this movie but the 2 weakest parts are the performance of Jamie Bell (though it was far from bad!), I just didn’t care too much about his character… but I’m thinking, was it really his performance or could it just have been the script or storyline? Like I found the fact that he said that he could have been one of the “bullies” just so so weird. What father would say something like that to his son? I found it extremely off-putting. And the second thing is that, like you, the ending was just a bit too much of a stretch or shock or whatever which distracted my mind from really FEELING it… my brain simply was too busy processing it, which really took away from the emotion of feeling it.
Overall I would also score the film a 8,5/10. The performances were great, as well as the storyline, so emotional, and also the cinematography was beautiful.

7:20 -- I'm not LGBTQ+ but this is the hook for me... the love story angle has always been done, which is fine, but it's the chance to see your parents again, that have passed away, which is the punch in the gut... all of the things you wish you could tell them, for them to see how your life turned out, etc. This film looks amazing.

Tied with "Past Lives," with which it would make a perfect double bill, as my #1 film of 2023. Devastating, poetic, enigmatic and beautiful. Not since Buñuel. All four principals are plus-perfect, with Andrew Scott beyond preternatural. Wept and wept. Its complete AMPAS shut-out is untenable. Unforgettable.

I have to say I really liked Jamie Bell here as well - especially because it felt a bit off… I exactly know these father - gay son relations… especially in contrast to the mother. The father is not that connected to his son - and Jamie embodies that really well. Saying both, that he would have bullied him and that he loves him…

Can you please wear more professional clothes when reviewing? it looks so unrespectful to the material and viewers. You are not talking about Marvel movies.

Brian's film reviews are always great. What's wrong with Brian wearing a tank top? Most men i know wear tank tops at least occassionly.

What a fascinating comment! I was so engrossed by the excellent, articulate review Brian gives that I didn't pay any attention to what he was wearing! And as Melania said: 'I really don't care'

Horrible movie and a total waste of time! I did not like this film at all - I just saw this movie this past weekend

I don’t know why most gay movies fall into the depression side. That usually adds to the problem of the gay community. Because the community wants to also show that they are doing fine. 😊
