We need an airshow map in DCS! Maybe Air Venture Oshkosh, SUN 'n FUN?
In this video I explore the idea of making a relatively small, new map for DCS World which only needs to be highly detailed around the airshow display area... and Eagle Dynamics could make this a free map for everyone to enjoy and attract new players!

I don't know that there would be a huge call out for a dedicated air show base, perhaps there is a way for ED to optimize a setting for an airshow experience . Maybe Nellis or Dubai?

I've been to the airshow at Nellis multiple times. When I saw the Nevada map for the first time, I was struck by how much it matched memory. Maybe a cut-down version of the Nevada map would fit your request. Im not sure if the map being cut down in size would help performance enough to use the Nellis flight line with the amount of detail needed or not. Great request. I'd love to see some virtual airshow videos, maybe try flying one.
Yeah the smaller size of the map was not to improve performance but to save on development costs. The performance would have to come from optimisation
Its a great idea but one expansion I would say and it would be cool but it could be a great way for ED to add in maybe coming soon display areas with like the f4 , chinook etc you could walk around before it comes out or it can have ai air display , kinda like what star citizen does but less scummy on a dedicated little map where the community could meet up.
What if they just allowed you to reduce the map scale in the ME?
I think asking for a custom map that so few people would ever use is a pretty huge ask, especially for free.
So instead of the entire map, just a box area of your chosen size, then maybe you’d be able to add more objects with less performance loss.
The reduced map size wasn’t actually to give more performance, it was more because it would make it very quick and easy to develop for them. An extra free map that doesn’t take a lot of time is good to have to attract new players. That’s my theory. I think some extra content wouldn’t hurt anyway.
Not sure the map size has much to do with performance. It should be mostly related to polygons on screen. More polygons means more light & shadow calculations.
So an airport with many static objects shall still have a heavy impact on fps.
Optimizations can be done with regards to the LOD, but this is not specific to any map.
I doubt this is easy to do and for free, but who knows !

The optimisation would be for them to do with the modelling and using models specific to the scene. At least that’s my theory

I think the following locations would be great:
Oshkosh
Fairford
Abbotsford
Dubai
Over the water (Pensacola, Huntington Beach, Seafair, etc.)

On to something there CommandT, maybe more of a multi-role generic type of airfield, but recognizable of course for hosting events also and can be used for flight training, testing yet have the airshow assets as a plugin template (or instant action item for complete noobs). Could just be a spruced and optimized up existing field/area in DCS as far as that goes. For free entry level planes go - a PC21 or T-6 Texan II may be good to have since they're fun to fly and not that systems heavy or intimidating but can be used for formation flying, soloing or just getting used to DCS dynamics. Also add a training or instant action section to help with maneuvers and formation practice since it can be hard to find groups or the time as a total noob but you just want to SP practice for a bit to get the experience in.
Yeah. For formation practice they need to overhaul the AI. In its current form it’s a chose to stay in formation with then every time they fly over a waypoint and start to turn.
I’m totally agree with you! It’s a cool idea expecially because it can be more realistic and inmersive experiece, plus a something of different for the community.

Wanting this for years! However, paid is the way to go to make it sustainable I think.
I like the idea, and even if they don't make it free it can always be an ultra cheap map for just 10 bucks maybe. As for a free full fidelity aircraft, don't we already have one? The TF-51D although it's unarmed
Yeah, I meant something proper, like a fighter jet. You’re right about the TF-51 though.
@@CommandT In that case we should either have something simple and cold war era. Like the A-4 Skyhawk which is already a free mod. Either that or maybe a helicopter, once again Cold War, possibly European or Russian

I'm totally biased, but I'd kill for Miramar (grew up there half my life).
If it's free i would be okay with it.But i would not pay for it. Airshows are a niche within a niche. Personally i'm not that interested in Airshows. But some people really love it. So i would be happy for them. I do watch the airshow live streams when new modules are being displayed. I think that's the perfect way to show of the new products.
There is only one thing that really annoys me in airshow videos and live streams. And that is the crowd/visitors. They really need an overhaul. And it would be nice if they moved a bit or even responded with clapping or something when certain maneuvers are done.

That’s not the point. Of course we do. This map wouldn’t have much of an effect or that. Nor am I suggesting that we get an Oshkosh map instead of Vietnam.

The various maps aren't the issue.
It's the "airshow" assets, plain & simple. They're too detailed and/or non-optimized in terms of LoDs/"Level of Detail" (my guess, given all the other LoD performance issues even with paid modules.
So the trick to fixing your airshow issue is getting all those assets optimized, not a new map.
ED isn't going to give us a new map, esp not another one for free (given Marianas Modern and the pending Marianas WW2). And given all the content built around the Caucasus, the best we can hope for is an upgrade to that already free map. There's quite a few airfields there that could do the trick.
OTOH, it's not too hard to imagine one of the airfields in Marianas as a stand in for the US Florida Keys, where there's a NAS Key West air show every year...
I mean at some point we have to be willing to use a little imagination... :)
