Eric Monte had to rewrite the scripts...
Much respect to James. This dude raised a lot of kids through the TV screen. The only dude to stand up to "MAD DOG"... He was about to slap a muzzle on him!
for years i have said this, they took a young black girl and had her fight, protest and her wanting to be a doctor, a professional, but in the end Thelma became a house wife who depended on her Football Player Husband, Micheal's dream for being a Supreme Court Judge was watered down so much that is was never mentioned again really and for some reason he wanted to be a singer?!?!?! Not to mention how the writers basically saw that they had a show about family, parents trying to make a way and kids who were trying to understand life...and both parents just gone...the spirit of the show was dying when James was gone and it died when Florida left. You will never get to see another show like that these days.

But in the earlier seasons, Florida was too apprehensive about everything, although she wanted to make sure her kids were safe and stable. James was firm but was a real BLACK father, so he did whatever was possible to provide and of course he had street smarts. Thelma originally wanted to pursue a career in the arts, and kept on being engaged three times and later marrying a football player who couldn't hold his liquor and struck her, and she settled in for basic relationship previously. Michael still wanted to be a lawyer but also juggled singing since that was his hidden talent. JJ.....and his bullshit became the focal points of the storyline and that's what drove both John Amos and Esther Rolle (for one season) to leave. Bookman always threatened them with eviction, but he was merely a janitor, and Willona seemed reasonable and relatable with Penny. The first five were funny in my opinion. But I get what you're saying.
Todd Ramsey yeah but when you so much emphasis onto one character who happened to be the star of the show, then that becomes a problem with the sitcom and storyline (in the case Jimmie Walker was cited as a poor example for young black youths, according to Esther Rolle, and that's why John Amos' was fired for that reason.) then that becomes hard to intertwined the plot for each episode.
It was truly a shame when they killed off James. It all went swiftly downhill. To rely on JJ to carry the show was ludicrous. Every time I saw him try to act in the more serious episodes, it was a travesty. From the beginning, he was nothing more than timed comic relief between the more serious issues. To see the show slump into shallow stories revolving around him was context and ratings suicide. It became predictable farce. Thelma's clothes got tighter. Willona's over-the-top sassiness became contrived. Florida was confused & her storylines were all over the place. Michael went from a militant to straight up corny. Penny was the forced "cute" factor with a melodramatic storyline that tried to recapture the depth of the show that was lost with James' departure. All in all, the only thing they proved by firing John Amos was how much the show really needed him. Their great loss.
Personally I think both James Evans and Cliff Huxtable were two excellent examples of the variations in African American family dynamics. Both are undeniably great depictions of how black people really lived and still do today in many scenarios.

Gotta love John Amos!!! Spectacular interview! After they killed his character James off of Good Times, all they had left to go on to entertain the masses was buffoonery. Yeah, the antics of JJ was funny and entertaining, but James Sr. brought a level of dignity and honor to the show. No disrespect to Florida (Esther Rolle - RIP), she tried her best to fill in the gap that was left by the removal of the James Evans character, with her superb acting talent, but she was at the mercy of the writers, who often downplayed anything dignified in a family struggling in the projects. But nothing can replace a strong father-figure in a home.
Back then, black folks were not supposed to be nothing more than funny! I guess it made some folks nervous to see black kids with dreams as statesmen or physicians. They give you that "that's nice sweetie" pat on the shoulder and dismiss you.

The idea of Good Times came up back in 1971, the show was actually came out in 1974.. Norman Lear did not want a Strong Black father.. Eric Monte the Creator and Norman Lear always argued.. Monte insisted that the Strong Black Father stayed in the script...

While it's good that James was a father figure to many, but there's no one way to be black. All of us didn't grow up in the hood, & it's very closed minded to insinuate otherwise. It's also ignorant to make any derogatory comments about those of us who grew up in the suburbs, or to make it a negative experience to do so...even the "Evans" depicted wanting to get OUT of the ghetto to have a better life for their children-that was the brass ring. So there are those who can look to a Cliff Huxtable as well as James Evans.
That's right...I loved this show and watched it religiously, and grew up in total suburbia. Esther Rolle's character reminded me of both my grandmothers, and my mom too. James reminded me of my granddaddy. I admired most how they lived in the ghetto, but raised their children to take the high road and not to resort to dishonesty to make their way through and out of the ghetto.
It was a 20 year gap in the condition of black in America between the two shows. U can't compare the the parenting because right after the civil rights movement there was no middle class for blacks.
James Evans was the tv pops I could relate to the most in my household growing up ..Underrated actor who always showed depth and range in everything he played in. I am not an African American,however being born in India and Raised in America since 1977 I for one did watch Good Times since 1982 the Re-runs. anyway long story short I met a African American girl who told me that her Mother kept her from watching Good Times, I asked her why because her Mamma grew up in the Projects made it successfully out did not want her daughter to witness a family struggling in the projects, what the hell is wrong with the learning the truth? ain't that a blimp ashamed of her past life African Americans who have made it need to give back, to the African American Community.
There are two Good Times. There is Good Times with James and Good Times without. When I come across Good Times with James, I stop. When I come across Good Times without James, I keep stepping. I'll always respect him for deciding to leave rather than support buffoonery for a check. Very few people possess that level of integrity.

The idea of Good Times came up back in 1971, the show was actually came out in 1974.. Norman Lear did not want a Strong Black father.. Eric Monte the Creator and Norman Lear always argued.. Monte insisted that the Strong Black Father stayed in the script...

While it's good that James was a father figure to many, but there's no one way to be black. All of us didn't grow up in the hood, & it's very closed minded to insinuate otherwise. It's also ignorant to make any derogatory comments about those of us who grew up in the suburbs, or to make it a negative experience to do so...even the "Evans" depicted wanting to get OUT of the ghetto to have a better life for their children-that was the brass ring. So there are those who can look to a Cliff Huxtable as well as James Evans.
That's right...I loved this show and watched it religiously, and grew up in total suburbia. Esther Rolle's character reminded me of both my grandmothers, and my mom too. James reminded me of my granddaddy. I admired most how they lived in the ghetto, but raised their children to take the high road and not to resort to dishonesty to make their way through and out of the ghetto.

My daughters are 4 and 9 and I turned them on to "Good Times" and we watched as a family almost every show till the end,As did my mom and I ,Thank you sir. Ps could you tell Bernadette Stanis the fool in love said she's totally hot.
He was RIGHT and I wish the producers would have took his advice and listened to him because the show WOULD have took a move positive outcome for poor African American families and WOULD have even inspired families in difficulty till this day!

Good times was the shit dudw. James was my favorite character. When he died I was pretty pissed off. Every ep after wasn't the same.
I am not an African American,however being born in India and Raised in America since 1977 I for one did watch Good Times since 1982 the Re-runs. anyway long story short I met a African American girl who told me that her Mother kept her from watching Good Times, I asked her why because her Mamma grew up in the Projects made it successfully out did not want her daughter to witness a family struggling in the projects, what the hell is wrong with the learning the truth? ain't that a blimp ashamed of her past life African Americans who have made it need to give back, to the African American Community.

When I come across Good Times with James, I stop. When I come across Good Times without James, I keep stepping. I'll always respect him for deciding to leave rather than support buffoonery for a check. Very few people possess that level of integrity.

You never know who's listening!
