I respect High School Musical for its charm and cultural relevance, but it didn't represent our experience. 7 brown kids all living in different households because we all had different moms, going to under funded public schools, our parents pushing us so hard to excel because we weren't going to be handed any opportunities. It was nice to see characters going through similar things on TV. HSM felt like a very heightened reality to us that we couldn't comprehend. Jump In felt much closer to home.
