Mastana Mahi was released on Friday, 24 September 1971 in Neelam Cinema Lahore. In spite of worst political circumstances of the country due to the 1971 India-Pakistan War, the film did well in the cinemas. It completed 15 weeks in a main cinema and 51 weeks in other cinemas of Karachi and thus became a golden jubilee film in Lahore. It also achieved Silver Jubilee in Karachi. Waheed received Nigar award for the best actor for his double role in Mastana Mahi, his heroines were Aaliya Begum & Naghma. It was also his first Punjabi film. He was the Producer of the movie however, after Mastana Mahi he produced no film except Hero which was produced in the 1980s and was released after his death in 1985. The director of the movie was Iftikhar Khan, Music was given by Nazir Ali and singers were Madam Noor Jahan, Mehdi Hassan sahab, Mala begum, Ahmed Rushdi and Rajab Ali sahab. The cast includes Waheed Murad, Aaliya, Naghma, Munawar Zarif, Khalifa Nazir, Ajmal, Asad Bukhari, Razia and the first heroine of the Pakistani film industry Sabira Begum known as Asha Posley.
