I am an American and I was rooting for Ben - till his match with Tiafoe (and after) - when he started showing his true colors. I hope his parents and others around him would actually read constructive criticism on social media and help Ben become the best version of himself. His press-conference after the match with Djokovic would be hilarious if it weren't so pathetic. Everything he said reeked of arrogance and passive-aggressive vindictiveness.
Not being able to say anything positive about his opponent? Saying that Novak was similar to him? Calling Djokovic “number 2 player” when it was already known that he was back to being #1? Plus, it is not a secret that Novak was robbed of his titles and rankings by not being allowed to play in many tournaments in 2022. Numbers aside, Ben could have used any other terms (like “top player”, for example).
Can’t tell the difference between imitating and mocking, seriously? Can’t tell when someone is being ironic? Shelton could have turned it into a good joke but no - he had to take another dig at his opponent.
Granted, Ben was ‘compensating’ because he was in pain. However, it is the degree of his disappointment that I find most shocking. He should have been elated to have played against the GOAT Novak and should have been beaming of joy, no matter the outcome.
Of course, any young player who reaches that level should want, hope, and aspire to win and believe it could happen, if all the stars aligned. There have been cases of astonishing upsets in history of tennis - but those were rather rare. To actually expect to win, to feel entitled to win the very first match against the greatest player of all times - is simply delusional.
I am afraid this is not just Shelton’s problem - it is something either cultural, generational or both. So many people seem to confuse confidence with arrogance - or worse.
I doubt Shelton will ever have Djokovic’s class as a person, but he is young and can learn a lot - in every aspect - from Novak, Federer, and others great players. I think he needs to watch as many videos as possible of Novak’s matches and pay attention to how Djokovic embraces his opponents after the match, regardless of winning or losing, and to what he says about them. Novak is not just a great tennis player - he is a remarkable person.

      @sergiosimbula 9 місяців тому +11

Djokovic is the goat. Nobody can disagree and ignore the stats. But your example is off. First of all that wasn't trash talk. It wasn't maybe for him (Federer) to say, but of course there was an enormous luck in that ball. Even Djokovic himself admitted that. You never hit a ball purposely on the line first of all. Second, that was a very low percentage shot and he clearly hit the ball recklessly. The rally after that was still somewhat all or nothing tennis. And then he shifted into tactical play. Believing he could break. Knowing the pressure was now on Fed. He made him go get the point , playing a very solid point keeping the ball deep. That's how he transformed that match. No shame in admitting there was some luck. Everybody needs it sometimes.

And one of the biggest reasons for that (apart from the technical aspects) is his shot selection/choice making: he almost never goes for the winner. Not even aiming at corners. He has in mind to always make the return. Aiming for big targets. Deep and often hard through the middle. That's his money shot. 99% of the time. Sure he makes some return winners now and then. I've heard him say that if a fast atp first serve comes at you you fe on deuce to your forehand, you aim through the middle deep slightly to the forehand (right) side of the server. And often when you then hit a winner you pretend it was meant like that. Now on this specific case I stick to what I said before: he went all out because at that moment he actually didn't have a plan for that point.

Novak has already proven his ability to overcome a negative environment at tournaments and handle trash talk from his opponents. Additionally, one must consider that at a very young age, Novak mentally overcame an extremely difficult period during the NATO bombing of Belgrade. It is challenging to undermine a champion like Novak with mere words when he has already experienced the harsh realities of war and witnessed the bombs that devastated his city and country. This adversity only made Novak stronger.
So, before comparing him to any of his opponents, it's essential to research their pasts and determine if they grew up in a tough environment or if they were always pampered and raised as privileged children. This will shed light on their true ability to face adversity and reveal their toughness.

@@I-come-from-the-FutureI'm not sure which aspect of history you've studied, but nowadays, you can easily access a wealth of information about various events. On March 24, 1999, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) initiated air strikes against Yugoslavia, which is now a part of Serbia, with Belgrade as its capital. At that time, Novak was much younger and lived with his family in Belgrade. When someone drops bombs on your country and city, destroying everything in the process, it is undoubtedly referred to as war.
It's understandable that many residents of the United States, approximately 98%, were unaware of the situation unfolding on the Balkan Peninsula back then, just as many remain uninformed about the events in Ukraine today. It's regrettable that the truth often becomes apparent several decades later. This is one of the reasons why the Clinton family isn't well-liked in Europe, although this isn't the appropriate forum to delve into that topic.

@@weekendhacker I get your point. On the one hand you are right, it is totally ok to root for your favorite athlete. And I agree this whole thing might have been too harsh on her. Too bad she was caught on camera. But I think we have to take the whole context into consideration. The finger lady episode is not about the finger lady. It is about the bigger picture of what was going throughout the whole match.
There are many, many accounts of the crowd being extremely hostile and unfair against Novak in this occasion, insulting him between first and second serves, applauding unforced errors etc etc. That is not the way to treat a great champion like him, or any other player for that matter! Tennis is a noble sport, this kind of crowd behavior has no place in a temple like Wimbledon Centre Court.
I myself am a big fan of the Big 3. I love Rafa, Roger and Novak to the same extent. Three giants, geniuses of the sport. But the unfair media and crowd treatment towards Novak has always bothered me.
I do think that if it was Nadal on the other side against Federer, people would have probably behaved differently. There would be no finger lady rooting against Rafa or Roger. The finger brings about another lesson: do not underestimate the opponent, the game is not over until the last point is scored.
I totally get the fact it was Roger's last chance of winning a Grand Slam. But I believe the Gods of tennis decided to give the crowd a lesson. If they had been more fair, maybe Roger would have won that one. Who knows...

In Shelton's case you should have put more emphasis on Ben's antics on the court which I'm sure were the main reason why Novak did the phone celebration.
There are unwritten rules in tennis that you don't celebrate excessively your opponents mistakes and Shelton disrespected that.
Whenever Djokovic did a double fault or an unforced error Ben celebrated like he won an insane winner and even stared at Novak trying to intimidate him lol. The crowd normally supported their home player nothing wrong with that, but their cheering on Novak's mistakes probably encouraged Ben to act the way he did as he was in a dire situation and needed a boost. Just look how he celebrated that break in the 3rd set to force a tiebreak, you'd think Ben won the match.
Imo if Shelton behaved normally during the match Novak wouldn't have mocked him (and the crowd) at the end.
Why didn't he do anything in the Fritz match? Because Taylor behaved like a normal person.

Some American players: Tiafoe, Coco, Pegula, etc said publicly that they should allow "trash-talking" at tennis.
They even mentioned that it should be more similar to "basketball".
I like when these entitled Americans get humbled. Tennis is not the NBA, sorry 😅

If I’m in the semi finals of the US open I’m not playing as a fan… I don’t see anything wrong with what he said.

That's why he is the GOAT. He is the GOAT in EVERY aspect. Even as a human. In Marbella he was simply a modest gentleman with a lot of attention and good intentions towards those who came to see him train. You'll never ever find an athlete as good as him in the world. In any sports. So instead of criticizing him one should be grateful to the world (and his mom) to have brought such a phenomenon in this world for us to witness.

As both a tennis player and a devoted tennis mom, my love for the sport runs deep. Naturally, I was excited about the emergence of young American talent, Ben Shelton. However, my optimism took a hit during his match with Tiafoe, and more significantly, after arrogant, disrespectful, cocky trues self. Initially, I was genuinely happy, about this young talented man, Shelton. However, it's now glaringly apparent that he possesses a sense of entitlement and a lack of respect for others. He represents the epitome of the new generation, exuding excessive confidence despite not having achieved any significant milestones as of yet.
I hope that Ben's family read our constructive criticisms that have surfaced on social media. Together, they can guide him toward a more refined version of himself. His p press conference was full of words of conceit and veiled bitterness.
What's most disheartening is Ben's inability to find a single positive word to say about his opponent. Even more perplexing was his insistence on drawing parallels between himself and Novak. "He never played ME!"
The most bewildering aspect is Ben's inability show healthy dose of sportsmanship! Unfortunately, this was not the case.
Playing against the GOAT, The best tennis player ever Novak Djokovic, should have been a source of learning, regardless of the match's outcome.
This issue may extend beyond Ben Shelton, generational, and cultural factors. Many individuals seem to blur the lines between confidence and arrogance, and perhaps even worse. TOXICITY!
I have doubts about Ben Shelton. Youth offers opportunities for to learn, and Ben has the chance to learn from Novak and many others.
Djokovic isn't merely a phenomenal tennis player; he's a remarkable individual who exemplifies sportsmanship and humility.
I really hope that Ben one day emerge as a better player and person. a true champion, both on and off the tennis court. JUST LIKE THE GOAT NOVAK or better..
