The first monorail in Australia was installed at Seaworld on the Gold Coast in 1986, followed by this one in 1988 and then came the one at Broadbeach on The Gold Coast in 1989. Ironically, the first one at Seaworld is the only one left.
I like monorel in Sydney. I already tried. Amazing. Nice station in building was people parking own car. We need monorel if want to go far building or mall but can't use car. Can't imagination. In Singapore also have in Sentosa Island. I saw near Universal Studios. I go there by taxi.
Thanks for sharing, we film gopro walks mainly in soulful cities in Europe, so it's great to have others guiding us through places we will probably never get to see. Thank you, I enjoyed traveling around with you and seeing these spaceagy scenes.
Great video! Does a fantastic job of showing how transportation can fit into a dense urban area in a minimal way. Eyesore? Compared to an elevated freeway? An elevated train track? Buses and cars stuck in street level traffic, spewing toxic exhaust? I agree the monorail needs to actually go somewhere useful, but I will take "eyesore" over air pollution and being stuck in street level traffic.
At the 3:50 mark in the video, the driver never looks forward, as he is engrossed in his conversation with the lady behind him! This is the same location where one train rear ended another train. Another interesting observation is that when I was there in January 2013, the trains just crawled at around 15km/h on that stretch of track descending toward the Darling Park Station. In your video, they monorails are running at a pretty good clip, something like 30km/h down the slope.
So stupid they got rid of it. That was a huge feature for tourists in Sydney. Rich tenants complained about the noise, and yet they didn't replace it with anything or extend it, it was just sold off as a meeting room at google and a museum. Meanwhile they'll never be able to build anything like that again with the money and laws they need to put in place around future properties. Sydney screwed itself.
Sydney is a wonderful city, a great city with no god damn monorails. I'm just saying, it's a great feature for people that travel through the city so they don't have to go with crowds, now that we're getting more populated. And it would be great if the just spent money to expand or add lines to the monorail instead of Sydney Metro, because what's the point of windows when you're technically always underground or looking at trees and houses? At least with monorail, you get to see more of the city up higher
the metro is useful because it is easier to get from stations like Bella Vista to Chatswood etc. The Lightrail however, is a bit useless because you have buses to get around the city and other areas
***** i doubt it. i mean, monorails are highly efficient in both energy and transport. i think the monorail's problem was that it was a one-way loop, which was the main mistake. if you can only go one direction, you won;t get many riders.
***** yeah, von roll designs are always what most people think when you say "monorail". they're so safe and great for bringing traffic, but everyone refuses to even consider them, especially in america where they dismiss it as a "theme park ride" and nothing more. thats like calling a Volkswagen Beetle a "baby's toy" and instead choosing a horse buggy. there's no real danger with them either, as the only way they could get in an accident is human error or stupid people just looking for an easy lawsuit, and the former is negated with computer-driven trains. the only real mass transit monorail is in las vegas, and the city wants to tear it down for no reason. the seattle monorail is from what i hear the fastest monorail in america, and the seattle government completely ignores it, and it runs on ride fares alone from what i was told. it's like america LOVES being bass-ackwards when it comes to city planning. instead of digging up everything and detroying homes and businesses, just dig a few holes, drop in some supports, lay pre-made rails, and be done in a matter of months. in charlotte NC, the light rail has been under construction since the late 90s, and it's STILL unfinished, and won;t be until the mid 2030s. it's sickening how everyone is more than happy to run people out of their homes and overrun businesses just to make an ugly light rail system that will cause more trouble than its worth once it reaches the college campus where drunk frat-boys will be jumping off the concrete barriers and running across tracks to see if they can outrun it.
No. Monorail is unpopular because too expensive, too slow, trouble switches and people are trapped when the monorail break down. This is struggle and complex to repair monorail tracks, unlike duo rail.
They should have extended the monorail to circular quay, down the eastern side of the city up william st to the cross and back up oxford st to liverpool st

It was so useful for us, me and my family would catch the monorail to get to Chinatown and look around the city, I don’t get how it “didn’t go anywhere people wanted to go” when it literally was connected to the city’s most popular attractions. I had a Metrocard and the “Smart” card, and I guess they are rare now because I can’t find them anywhere.
So. Many. Memories. (Sniffs) I loved the Monorail so much that I was heart broken when it closed. I now hate every Sydney Lightrail except the Variotrams.

That's a cute little monorail you guys got going there.
Sad it was not expanded to more of the city of Sydney area.
i think it would have been good if it went to circular quay, luna park and central station.
Monorail looks so awesome
The electrification was at 500 V AC, from the power rail.

@@mrbenwong86 and unfortunately the one at Sea World has closed down since I made that last post.

Не перестаю восхищаться актуально необычной архитектурой станций монорельса Сидней. Да и скоростью тоже, если сравнивать с московским монорельсом...

totally agree.
Yep, I really couldn't believe it when I heard about it. The monorail made Sydney unique and really stand out. Such a dumb decision...
I wouldn’t say Sydney Screwed itself but it was disappointing.
That's so sad.
Agreed. I now hate every Sydney Lightrail except the Variotrams.
great video!
nice monorail, nice video :)
The old route should have been a elevated walkway.
I am coming to Australia, which city is best for living and working
Looks like the same rolling stock as the Newark AirTrain.

Why would they remove it though
Because the track had a dent and the monorail tried to brake and it didn’t work and it crashed the monorail.
why dismantled ?
skyway built a new one in australia
What camera are you using?
Wait, they dismantled it? Why?
because they're backwards-thinking

Leave it to Sydney to be smart enough to keep such a delightful idea alive in the world. But please get rid of the ads on the train. Tacky.
They've closed the monorail. It's no more.
Well when it was running they needed the ads to fund the maintenance of the network. Eg. Keeping the Monorails Running and to safety Standards.
