TRUSTING THE GOD WHO KNOWS YOU!
Jeremiah 1:1-10
Introduction:
This text that we just read describes for us the call of the prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah whose name means, “Yahweh Shoots or Yahweh Hurls” was born to a priest in Anathoth, in the territory of Benjamin. Though he was born in a priestly home, the call on his life was to become a prophet. He was “hurled by Yahweh” to become a spokesperson for Him in a very difficult and challenging time in the history of his nation (the Southern Kingdom of Judah). I would like to highlight three simple but powerful truths from the passage that we just read.
1. GOD KNOWS YOUR PERSON:
"Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." Jeremiah 1:4 & 5
• God knows you by name (Isaiah 43:1)
• God knows your thoughts (Psalms 139:2)
• God knows your ways and has counted your steps (Job 31:4)
• God knows when you weep and has kept a record of your tears (Psalms 56:8)
• God even knows the very hairs on your head (Matthew 10:29, 30)
2. GOD KNOWS YOUR POTENTIAL
"Ah, Sovereign LORD," I said, "I do not know how to speak; I am only a child." 7 But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a child.' You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Jeremiah 1:6 & 7
• God not only knows the way we are, but also who we would eventually become!
• Illustration - Judges 6:12. It does appear that God called Gideon what he would become, certainly not what he was at the time of this encounter!
• While people size us up by who we are today, God is the only one who can see our true potential. God sees us for what we can become, as He works in and through our lives.
3. GOD KNOWS YOUR PURPOSE
Before you were born, I set you apart, and I appointed you as a prophet unto the nations; Jeremiah 1:5
• Jeremiah was born with a certain task that he was created to perform. In Jeremiah’s case, he was set apart for the purpose of being a prophet.
• Each person in this room was created on purpose for a purpose.
• There is a sovereign purpose for each of our lives. We are not aimlessly wandering through life to some unknown destination.
• In John 15:16, the Lord Jesus says you have not chosen me, but I have chosen you and ordained you, that you may bear fruit and that your fruit may remain.
Conclusion
Jeremiah’s life was lived with purpose because he trusted that God really knew him. He trusted that God knew what was best for him. Some of us need to give up the reins of control and turn them over to God. We need to make a decision to trust Him completely.... with our lives, our future our dreams and aspirations! God knows your person, your potential and your purpose
